Something needs to be done about the posts made by Xerox in the War in Gaza thread. I can understand Antipaladin's frustration and anger (?) over this and I guess I would feel insulted as well if I was an Israeli and someone was making posts like Xerox does.

It's a clear lack of respect from Xerox.

While Xerox may be annoying, this does not give you the right to respond in kind. Unless you go down to his level.

Thread: LGBT Community Board

And again we have a copy of most of the threads in the OSM lately. After a while it turns into a quote war...and after a second while, it turns completely off topic. And which members are mostly involved? Exactly....

I will give an official warning to TheDeath now. And I will try to explain why:

I watched your actions / way of posting the last weeks pretty often, just to get an idea what's the purpose behind all these quote war/ off topic issues.

And you know what? I think I have found the reason! You do NOT post just because you have a different opinion. You post just to "be against" the other one. You may have noticed lately, members ask you where your POINT is in your post. It really seems you do not try to inform yourself a bit better to have more knowledge about a topic, but just throw in an opposit statement. Your explanations lead you to nowhere land pretty often, because your arguments are just not of much value. You then leave the "topic road" and slightly try to bring in a different point, where you think you have better chances to have valid arguments again. And then we have our off topic discussion.

Pretty good example is this LGBT thread. YOU are the one who turned this into a sleep/heroine/addiction thread. Even if it is off topic, you should really try to get more informations about the term "addiction" (hint illness!).

I would really like to see more OSM threads staying on a kind of "serious" track when discussed, because we have many interesting topics lately. People try to state their point of view, and should be taken seriously! This will make it easier to involve more members into such threads and have a discussion with many more interesting opinions.

And this leads me to JollyJoker:
You should try to leave out things like "NONSENSE" "IT.IS.WRONG" etc..., because I have yet to see any reference of you which makes your opinion more "valid" and more true than others. You should try to accept different opinions and not disqualify them ONLY because yours differ. You either have to name sources which underline YOUR opinion and show others are wrong, or you try to convince others with your points, but use valid WORDS and ARGUMENTS, not those tags mentioned above.
If you recognize, a member is just not able or not willing to follow your idea, just stop arguing with him/her. There are others present who are probably more open to new ways. This will prevent us all from things mentioned above, including off topic quote wars.

This forum should be a place where all should feel well when present, not only this handfull of members who like fighting each other and stick an imaginary sign on the door which says: "KEEP OUT! NO TRESPASSING! WATCH OUT THE SAVAGE DOGS!"

I hope you get my idea....

Most new comers are too lazy to know that most threads are copycats.

Then again I also learned a big lesson AS IT SEEMS.
Someone made a copycat. I resurrected (Thank you Mozilla ) an old thread where most of the people I knew are not with us.
I Got heated bad lol.

So point is that copycats is ok within reason .

I realize it was off-topic so I do not comment on the fact that you are right -- I need a warning. But I comment on the other things:

Quote:
And you know what? I think I have found the reason! You do NOT post just because you have a different opinion. You post just to "be against" the other one.
Yes. That's what I do most times. However, why is that a bad thing? I mean, it's not like if someone doesn't argue with you (about a certain thing), that thing doesn't exist. It still does. Just because this board doesn't have, for example, the "characters" I "play" (well you get it), it doesn't mean that those subjects needn't be debated. (even if I personally disagree with them).

Quote:
YOU are the one who turned this into a sleep/heroine/addiction thread. Even if it is off topic, you should really try to get more informations about the term "addiction" (hint illness!).
Addiction is a "habit", not an "illness" (whatever that means).

Quote:
Addiction (noun): the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming.

So yes I agree with the fact that I needed a warning for derailing the threads (and sorry again) but not for playing Devil's Advocate

In all honesty you do. Above all you needed that. You don't seem to notice it from the reaction you get to your posts and whenever a mere mortal tells you you'd hardly ever take it serious.

angelito has described your posting attitude very exact. And he is right in what he says (I mean the fact that most people who argue with you make the same points about you should be an idication that they are valid, apart from them simply being correct and thus being valid).

I don't say this because I don't like you or stuff like that I just thought that it might help to let you hear that people do actually see you as he described.

Maybe I'm some wacko who changes his opinions every second? In all seriousness, why would that change anything?

Why does it even matter WHO posts a given post as long as the post has points? (since obviously playing Devil's advocate is like posting with someone else)

Look what I wrote in the Tribunal posting limits thread:

Quote:

1. Not every post gets a response.  Some people make very valid or even ludicrous posts that get lost in the shuffle because of a page-spanning argument between regulars.

The answer I got from hardcore osm'ers was basically "not every post merits a response".

How do you feel about the merit of your post in the "where is the world going to" thread Father?

Huh? You do realize that he is the one more quote-warrior than me right? Not that it matters anyway.

Then again he got into argument more with baklava than me -- I got with Deadman as well. del_diablo posted some stuff as well. Even Elvin which rarely posts in the OSM. I would actually say the thread is pretty successful -- many people participated in it, even in the off topic. If anything I don't think it's fair to just point fingers at me and mvass and I (and probably mvass as well, but I won't speak in his name) am especially tired of being treated like the only ones who derail threads and the scapegoats used for this excuse (no don't worry it's not about you, but in general)

Even Deadman participated in it. In fact even his first post covered this subject. It may not be on the main point of the thread but it is not off topic.

It's simply ridiculous that the thread moved to the matter of selfishness, don't you guys have anything better to do? THAT is a thread killer, some people will get frustrated at how ridiculous it all is, will argue why it is so and what the word actually means, mvass will counter, the discussion will continue going nowhere for a while and soon enough the thread will become too annoying to read. Please stop this nonsense. It's also annoying how TheDeath will overlook the meaning of what is being said and post something else loosely related or irrelevant to the discussion just for argument's sake. Christ.

If you want people to visit this place and contribute that's not the right approach.

No that's the problem because people will often use enumeration or a "main point" to slip something else behind. I reply to that. Plain and simple -- if you don't want a reply to it, don't "slip" it into your post. In fact this is the reason many quote wars are started.

For example, two atheists discussing the 'falsity' of the Bible. One of them starts with arguments. The other one nods. The first one then mentions in the middle of his post or just "slip" it to the end (in short not regarding the main subject) something like "the Ten Commandments are just stupid!".

Then the second atheist, as much as he doesn't believe in religion, QUOTES this and argues with it, why some of them are indeed good. Is that off topic? Yes, since it is about falsifiability, not WHETHER YOU LIKE WHAT IS INSIDE OR NOT. Thus starts a quote war, and off topic at that.

Who's fault is here? If the second atheist would just "agree" with the main point (which he does), it is implicitly as if he would also agree with the "slipped" thing.

In fact if you think about it, it can't even be argued otherwise (without going into the selfishness debate). For example, Person A says: "The world is going in a bad direction because of selfishness". Person B asks "What do you mean by selfishness?" and so the thing starts.

What do YOU expect to do? Just agree or disagree? How constructive is that? (talking to the people who said it's gone in the wrong direction)
