I think Corribus and MVass should be penalized for intentionally spamming in this thread on page 2:

Way to mess up a nice thread.  Just because something is posted in "your" subforum doesn't mean you must post there.

The mentioned thread was cleaned right now.

Come on guys, can't you just let a thread go where the opener intentionally wants to go? Is it really needed we make a scientific lesson out of every word?

Just stay out of such threads if you can't contribute....please.

I wasn't spamming the thread.  I was actually trying to ask a real question.

Which still nobody can seem to answer.

Tell you what.  If you can logically explain the distinction of "randomness" between "A kid asked me to help him with his homework today" and "I hit a red light on my way to work this morning" (the comment of mine which is apparently what you consider spamming), then I'll gladly admit I was wrong and you'll never hear from me on the matter again.

On the other hand, if you can't, then I submit that my post(s) were just deleted unfairly.

Quite simple really. Apparently, as it is, Lucky_Dwarf - in further text referred to as Lucky - neither expected nor rationally assumed a large (or, even, notable) chance of a youthful human specimen approaching and, contrary to all laws of regular expectation - inquiring about aid or at the very least a small contribution toward the cause of homework doing; while you yourself, unlike Lucky, had, if not certain, then - we'll agree - rather decent chances of encountering a red light on your way to work as an undoubtedly superb physical chemist that you are. It would seem to me that the author's thoughts concerning the general direction of the aforementioned thread were largely focused on unusual, if not truly strange experiences; mostly unique, with just the right dose of paranormal tossed in several spots to spice the overall tone up, which you have quite ruthlessly put a stop to by starting and maintaining an extraordinarily boring discussion of the very nature of the term "random" itself; which some of the mods, Angelito in this case, in their (his) borders of authority, have considered harmful to the thread itself, and thus quietly removed.

In layman's terms, the above text could be summed up as the following:

The thread's about unexpected stuff. Some random kid asking you to do his homework isn't the most intriguing thing around, but it's not something that happens every day, either. Red lights on the way to work, though, can't be regarded as unexpected no matter how you look at it.
You're a 30 year old physical chemist with a knack for turning everything into a complicated discussion. Some of us aren't. Mods deleted your posts cause they thought they derailed the intention of the thread.
And now you find yourself offended over 3 or 4 deleted posts.
Just let it go, dude. You have at least 20 threads with quasi-scientific discussions going on in them. Leave this one to casual posters.

That said, I see no need for any kind of penalty here. It's just a misunderstanding.
The entire OSM is a giant misunderstanding, though.

You people need to grow a sense of humor and chill out.  I've never seen so many people so serious about something so stupid.  I can't imagine how stressed out you people must get over things that are actually important.  My advice: go get yourself a nice glass of wine, if you're old enough for that sort of thing.

Grow a sense of humour and chill out? Coming from you who's complaining about your posts being deleted? I think it might be you who needs to chill out. Most of us have a sense of humour but there are times when it's appropriate and times when it's not appropriate. If the thread was in the Tavern then sure, it might have been funny, but Lucky-Dwarf was serious with the thread and it's not nice when a couple of members (in this case you and Mvass) feel the need to try to be funny when it's not needed.

If it was in the VW then I can understand your point. But many random things happen every day  and that is why it's in the OSM, for people to share those random events that made you think "wth?". I mean, just read one of Father's posts in the thread and tell me how that is not serious. Random in itself is an unpredictable thing, right? Just because something is random doesn't mean that it's not serious. I mean, I've had some person say that The Beatles suck. I thought that was pretty random because it's not something that I hear everyday, but it was a serious thing because it was his opinion. I hope you understand what I'm getting at.

Come now, William, let's be honest.  Do you really think I could actually be angry over my posts being deleted in that silly thread?  I mean, honestly mad?  Angelito could have asked me and I would have deleted them myself.  I didn't really have any particular attachment to them.

Quote:

Actually I wasn't trying to be funny. [echo] I was actually trying to ask a serious question. [echo] If you guys were really offended by it, you could have just ignored it or asked me to nicely to go away.  Amusingly enough, lucky-dwarf never seemed to be irritated by my honest question - it was just the rest of you, my guess being that it was out of consternation that you couldn't answer it.

What's gone on since then has been amusing only to the extent that you guys are so serious about a silly thread that really isn't about anything at all.  Though I do think it is somewhat funny that my posts were deleted, since, strictly speaking, they WERE on-topic, it's even more amusing that you think I actually honestly am angry that they're gone.

In any case, I wish I could keep whipping you up into a furor forever, but that would be mean and then I would really have something to be punished for.

Quote:
Random in itself is an unpredictable thing, right?

[Game Show Buzzer Error Sound]The result of rolls of dice is random, but the results are quite predictable.

Anyway, this is really fun, but I think I've goaded you guys along enough.  I do think it's sad that Mr. Phoenix's solution was to come here and whine to the moderators when he could have just told me he found my questions irritating.  I'm sure we could have come to some sort of amicable conclusion just by talking about it - you know, the way adults handle problems - and then we could have probably just laughed it off.

Sadly, he's now on my permanent enemy list.  As for you others, please do yourself a favor and find a pressure release value - this sort of anger and intensity is unhealthy.

@Lucky_dwarf
By the way, lucky_dwarf, if you're out there, I just wanted to let you know - if I offended you by ruining your thread, even unintentionally, I really am sorry.  Please accept my apology; it wasn't my intent.  I thought we could have a discussion about what randomness really means with regard to events in our lives, but I guess for some reason everyone was extremely offended by it.  I think it's also important to understand that precision in language is important, and it always helps to be as clear as possible in any discourse.  But it turns out that that sort of conversation was not to happen, as the viciousness of the collective response was overwhelming.   I can assure you all that I never set out purposely to ruin anyone's threads.  I'm surprised that some of you could think so little of me.

(Nevertheless, apology to lucky-dwarf notwithstanding, most of you are still wrong about the meaning of randomness. )

Are you people serious?

As some of you may know, my two primary arenas of political discussion are the OSM and the GameFAQs Politics board. In the latter place, there are significant disagreements, but "Why do you hate freedom?" is a clear mark of trolling. Here, though, as I have realized recently, "Why do you hate freedom?" is a valid question - because many people here do. They don't trust the individual risk-taker, innovator, and profit-seeker - instead, they favor the coercive power of government. In short, the OSM - except for a few people - is full of would-be dictators. In fact, they remind me of the Big Nurse from One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest: "It's for your own good, so obey!" Seriously.

The way I see it you want it both ways.  It's very contradictory for mvass to claim that any poster that is not liberal is off-topic in his liberal thread and then to complain when the same standard is applied to the unexpected random events thread.

Edit: As for the Corribus part in it I see it this way.

1. Lucky_Dwarf posts topic
2. People post in similar style
3. Corribus asks for clarification of topic
4. Receives answer from Lucky_Dwarf, Father, Phoenix
5. Corribus insists answer is not good enough
6. Baklava repeats answer with humor
7. Corribus insists answer is not good enough

If you are not satisfied with the answer but everyone else understands the topic, repeating yourself over and over is not going to add to the 'friendly environment' of the forum.  It's safer to leave the posting in that thread to those who do understand the topic.
