But in all seriousness angelito... I believe you're being a bit of a hypocrite, no offense. What you do with Elodin in the Religious threads (or most people who'd take the side of believing in a higher power) is atleast on par with william calling someone an idiot. Of course you don't spell it out "You're an idiot X" but both your methaphors or comparrisons or "blablabla" oneliners are on the same levels to say the least... but I guess that's what that CoC loophole is for? You can't call someone an idiot but you can say "I find what you believe very very ridiculous and I don't see how any logicaly thinking human being can in good conciousness believe such nonsense."?? Talk about being condesending.
I approve of this message, especially in the sense that william's post intent wasn't as bad as deserving a penalty, because that's what matters to me. Well that's just me.

I think it is time again to close the religion thread.  Everything that can be said has been said.  Most of it is just a bunch of people holding their ears, screaming at the top of their lungs their opinion.  Mostly their opinion as FACT.  Think they need to crack open a dictionary and learn the difference between the two.

And now it has pretty much degenerated even farther to "Uh huh you did." "Nu uh I didn't...you did!"

You are free, as every other member here of course, to have your own opinion.

But what you (mostly) all miss, is to view those things from the Mod and not the member side. Of course many, if not most, of you are not able to do so, because they aren't and have never been in a Mod position.

Do you really think it is the correct and efficient way to first ask a member, who clearly insulted another member, if it was his intention to do so?

When you drive too fast and get caught by the police, do they ask you if it was your intention to drive that fast? And even if you say "No, sorry", you think you do not get your bill?

You have to differ between spoken and written words. Of course we all have spoken words in the past in a situation of anger or similar which we have regretted. But if you write something, you have enough time to reread your stuff again, and of course to calm down.

So if someone calls me an idiot in real life, I may look at him and ask "huh?", while he probably would say something like "Sorry, didn't want to insult you...". But if the same guy writes me a message / a letter where he calls me an idiot, this is kinda different stuff.

You can turn it around and read it from all sides, but it won't change: If someone writes in his post "YOU BLOODY IDIOT", without any smiley, and his whole post has an angry mood, he wrote what he meant!

And many members in the last 5 years complained about Mods not being neutral, about favoritism. And this is just not the case. As soon as we see things like that, we have to react.

I even try to differ if it is an insult with a humorous intention, for example calling someone else a parrot (). This is where I do not apply a penalty immediately, but give a warning first.
But calling someone an idiot, a douche or else just lacks any kind of humor.

The OSM has to be treated that way, otherwise we will have the same situation as we had some months ago. In my eyes, the OSM already went into a positive direction again. More members than just the 3 known "born debaters" participated again lately. And it is good that way.

It is not a good trend, some members recieve a handfull of +qp for role playing games and creating nice pictures, gifs or mods, and use the more rights they have earned due to their more red stars, to play the "veterans" in the OSM and think they only have to follow their own rules.

I've said it already earlier in this thread: I didn't create the CoC. If you like things changed there, write it down in the Tribunal and wait until Val replies. Until then, you have to live with the "naughty, naughty" angelito

Just for some info, calling someone a bloody idiot down here in Australia isn't that big of an insult, it's usually something said among friends, but that doesn't really apply here I guess so it doesn't matter.

I apologise for calling him an idiot but it won't really change things so yeah.

We have some sayings here in bavaria, which would be counted as an insult in the rest of Germany for sure, but here it is nothing special (for example: DEPP), so I get your point.

But even yourself just wrote, calling someone a bloody idiot isn't that big of an insult. You didn't say it is NO insult.
For the reason I am no australian, what did you mean with that, else than insulting him? I know most of the (north) american put the F-word right behind every second sentence, so it seems kinda normal there. Is that similar in Australia aswell?

One of the Mods here (namely me) has been rather lax lately.  Mostly from frustration, but also health and other issues.  See here is the problem with the Moderating position.

The problem with the OSM isn't the mods.  It's with the people who post here.  No offense meant to said people, but, well, there you have it.

There's a saying here that goes,
"The shepherd fought the village and cut off his own penis."

In all seriousness.
I heard people say it on TV.

Mind you, it has nothing to do with this discussion.

From JJ in the religion thread:
Quote:
Elodin, that's just pitiful. I have to admit that I didn't think you were such a coward. You are behaving like a 5$-solicitor. You certainly don't squirm this way when you throw stones against sinners, abortionists, socialists, atheists, communists, non-Americans, Democrats, Moores, Obamas, you name it.

On the other hand I feel a sick satisfaction to see you squirm; you have brought that onto yourself.
For me, you have lost every bit of credibility you may have had. Bark at whoever you want. I don't care anymore.
Wow. I'm no fan of Elodin. But even I think that's going too far.

It further degenerates every day.  Ohfor has at least attempted to keep a decent discussion going, but it is being drowned out.  Mod Squad will be busy next couple of days with a few things.  Here is the bottom line.  IF the discussions do not become more civil then we will have to conclude that everything has been said.  The thread WILL then be closed.  Period.

Feel free to whine about it if you want, it is a festering sore as it is, and needs to be lanced.

Maybe in the future - in a few months or so - it'll be possible to have a good conversation about religion again. With the way things are now, though...

JJ:
Come on, now. You must realise that Elodin going around and calling people liars is no better than what we've come to expect from him. However, you descended to his level (not to mention you've said similar things to Death). It's rather disappointing. Yes, Elodin isn't a very fun person to talk to most of the time - he often gets repetitive and unreasonable. But that doesn't mean you have to start acting that way too.

Do you think it will be different, though? I am seriously having my doubts. I have followed a lot of the religion thread and it's pretty much the same as what happened in TA's original thread. What makes you think it'll be any different in another thread?

Well, TA's thread went pretty well for quite a while. It went downhill when FortressFan came in, and again with Elodin, but other than that it was quite good.

If you don't like it, tough luck.
Statements like this are really doing wonders for the tone of conversation here. I could easily apply your methods, not engage you, and just say what you wrote is a load of crap. But I won't. You know why? Because the downward spiral has to stop. Just because you may not agree with what someone says doesn't mean you can just dismiss it, which is what you keep doing to Death. Instead of addressing his valid points, you (and, occasionally, others, like Angelito in the Copyright thread with statements like, "Have you hacked TheDeath's account? What sense does your post have at all?" [good job setting an example for all of us, by the way, Angelito]) just result to waving it aside. You know what it makes it look like? It looks like you have nothing to say and are just trying to avoid addressing his points.

Quote:
Elodin calls people liars on every page of a thread - but strangely enough he's still discussing with them
What he does can hardly be called "discussing". He doesn't really care about convincing anyone - he just wants to argue. Of course we're liars. We're his ideological opponents - we can't have anything truthful to say. And thus he does battle with us.
