Nice thought Svarog, I've added a link to the thread to the Index

A link at the top of the the 1st Post???

What is the meaning of this?! If that isn't the dumbest thing that I've ever heard of, than I don't know what is! Who in their right mind would put a link at the top of the 1st Post...seriously?!

Okay, do I have everybody freaked-out now??? Good...because I was just joking!

Good explanation of the "system", Asmodean...good idea of the "link in the 1st Post", Svarog...and good work getting it done, Pandora!

Sorry for razzing you guys, but humour is a self-defense mechanism for me and I have been on the defensive quite a bit today and simply needed an "outlet"! Thanks!

hmmm, methinks that we might need to open up a 'spa thread' somewhere, so Leo can shake off some of the stress

the link seemed like an easy enough idea to put in, but for members looking for pictures its easier just to use the index as it's intended - each page is linked already

Hey Asmodean, if you really want to start giving out more QPs in this Forum...Pandora, as well ...I suggest that Conan get one for the Thread that has sparked this interesting discussion!

Well I'll have to discuss it with Pan...otherwise she might hurt me
But my initial answer's probably gonna be 'no'.
Yes it's important that we have this discussion, and yes it's best we have it now, rather than further down the line when there might be heated feelings involved in it - but truth for truth, Pan and I had already begun to discuss it (though not n so much detail), when the poll came out.

Anyways, with the type of stuff you and Conan come up with you'll soon be swimming in stars, so I wouldn't worry about it

Edit - 3 QP's given to Svarog, Consis and Terje in the China thread.

Isn't it funny... sometimes I feel that people are a little afraid of the 'Other Side'.
All (most) of what goes on in here is discussion of politics and deep philosophical matters, (almost) everything else that may fall under the Real Life catagory either goes in the Wastlands if the poster doesn't have any confidence in it, or the Tavern if he thinks it's quite clever.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It applies to myself as well, I guess. If I were to start something like the self-criticism thread, I'd most likely have done it in Tavern. Although it's prolly not jolly enough for that place...

I think members sometimes view this as the 'Politics Forum' when what it really is, is the forum where you can talk about yourself, your views and hopes in an environment where you won't get poked fun at (That's for Tavern).

At least I hope it is.....

My Downhill Times Thread did pretty good for a while, but then it kinda went downhill. And then Val rescued it last week and now it's out on a short vacation. Overall, it's been a good experience so far. I can't say, however, that I've much to contribute as far as Other Side threads are concerned, so I'm sticking more with the Tavern and Wastelands now. Most of my creativity ("what creativity?!?" -brain) kicks in while in those places, I suppose. Of course, new ideas and new heartbreaks will keep me coming back to the Other Side from time to time.

I tried to go outside politics for this very reason by talking about spirituality ... let's just say it didn't go too far.

I guess spirituality is not a popular issue, which is what I wanted to find out in a way....

Well, I wouldn't say "unpopular", but spirituality is for many people a personal issue, that's hard to talk about.

I, as an example, find it hard to put words on my spiritual emotions, and to concretisise the rather abstract and metaphysical elements of my "faith". In addition, I find personal faith to be just that: personal. If they don't wanna talk much about it, or if they find it hard to do so, they of course shouldn't. Also, I personally consider spirituality to be something one shouldn't flaunt about, as in opposition to one's political opinions.

But all of this is of course just my view on stuff.

I agree with most of what you said, but would not debate it here... I would encourage you to post it in the spirituality thread so I could respond and we could talk about it!

This thread is to talk about the REAL LIFE.
Real life Politics, real life reality.
The Tavern is fake, where the reality is on the internet reality, where you can be whatever you want to be.
While on the OTHER SIDE, you talk about the real you.
Even tho sometimes i still think some of yall who post on here are fake as well.

It's not just the Politics Forum, it's the Debate Forum.  Just as anything is up to be poked fun at in the Tavern, anything is up to be argued in the Other Side.  That's what happened with the spirituality thread, I think.  Once a debate started over the very validity of the spiritual mode, it was no longer safe for people to share their experiences.  A few threads have managed to buck the trend (in both fora), but overall the Other Side is no more safe to share yourself than the Tavern.  You have to be sure a thread is one of the charmed few before taking the risk, or you could find yourself on the wrong end of a very painful "discussion."

Humans are complex critters -- just because they behave one way in a playful enviroment (Tavern) and another in a serious one (Other Side) doesn't mean either mode is fake.  The only place I'd designate as "fake" is the Glade, but a better term would be "fiction" because that's the point of RP.    Individual people may be another matter, but so it goes.  It's the Internet.  There's no such thing as a perfectly safe enviroment, and no way to get away from those who are permanently stuck in role-play mode.

Sadly, I agree. I'd like to see more discussion and less debate though, especially in that thread.

But anyways, the thread has been revived now so it's all good!

I think it's only sad insofar as there is confusion over particular threads, like the spirituality one.  I also don't think we need to have less debate in order to have more discussion.  After all, some people are only here for the debate.

The Other Side is not the harshest forum on the Internet, but it's not the most touchy-feely.  Maybe we just need to be more clear and/or respectful about thread atmospheres, going by each individual thread and not the forum as a whole.

Edit:  Just to throw another banana peel into the ring...Atheists raise your hands, a debate thread gone into discussion.  Much got deleted in an unfortunate forum crash (my memory of the thread is better than what I see now ), but it's interesting as is.

Hmmm

English being my second language, I was just wondering if someone would define the subtle dufferences between "debate" and "discussion" for me, since I consider the two words to be synonymous to each other...

A debate is a kind of discussion.  Technically, the distinction should be between "debate" and something like "sharing," but we're using sloppy English here.  Where we say "discussion," we mean "friendly, non-arguing talking" -- the kind of discussion that's not debate.

Good question that I am happy to answer:

Debate is, in essence, a discussion in which to people do not agree with each other and give arguments to proove their point. This could (but does not have to) lead to emotional situations and trying to make someone change his/her mind. (Like Shiva and Svarog in the Spirituality thread) In a debate, you ask questions to which you know the answer, to proove a point. Once someone says "I agree", the debate turns into a discussion.

Discussion is more about adding to what the other is saying, like this post. I am discussing with you what debate and discussion are, I am not debating it. In a discussion, you ask questions you do not know the answer to enhance the discussion. Discussion seldomly lead to emotional situations. It is somewhat of a dialog where it's ok to say "I agree".
