The way to read it would be:
"then attack a stack on map with mainhero which you have a faster unit that way you will get first move and you can retreat. Unless you got tactics, because then the speed of you unit is not an issue, you can just retreat on your tactics phase."

why shoud someone go against a pack of archangels with 4 lvl 1 creatures? just to see if they are 11 or 19 ar something in between? you can use visions for this,no need to risk loosing the hero and any artifacts he poseses,if a stack gets morale.

The person would want to attack them because he want to simulate som kind of Town Portal. He have a correct chain back to town, thus retreating and recruiting hero up in tavern again, and then chaining his units back home. Next day he can start again from main town (or any other town of his choice)
