Most useful creatures

What do you think, which creatures are the most useful in their levels?

I guess:

1st level: berserker (fast-growing population, good fight skills, cheap price)
2nd level: ballista (long ranged power artillery)
3th level: genie (spellcasting - just try out what damage can 100 genie do with an ice bolt!!)
4th level: fairy dragon (can help much in combat with spells, but never let it melee fight)

1st level: Sprite.  They are weak but one of the few 1st level creatures that make a diffrence in the endgame (because of no ret) and, as has been pointed out to me, they can kill Hydras!

2nd level: Medusa.  Think 100 genies are tough?  Try a couple hundred of these...

3rd level: Genies.

4th level: Tough- I'm feeling very Order todya, so I'll say the Titan.  Dunno though, tomorrrow I may lean more towards bone dragon.

Dang, drlucifer beat me to it while I was creating a profile. Hi everyone, new to the forums here. Been playing the heroes series for a long time, 2 3 and 4, although right now I'm back to 3 for a while. Haven't played online so yeah in that regard I'm a newbie, anyway on to the creatures!

1 - 3. Same as drluecifer. They all do have some very nice specialties. For the genies I rarely get to use those big ice bolts really, most of the time it's split up genies with slow and song of peace. I would choose centaurs over berserkers in level 1 with stronghold, hate not being able to control them. If fighting a level 3 on the map those cyclops can be a pain also if they are in the back row.

4. Black dragon. With no expansions and no equilibris (not totally sure what that is) I really don't see any competition to it. The direct damage seems pitifully small in heroes 4 compared to the earlier games in the series. Having cloud of confusion on fairies like in equilibris seems nice, but right now when a stack of them of them bolts something it will do a bit under 3k while a similar stack of blacks will do 20-40k in melee. Rough numbers, and different growth rate. In that range somewhere though.

Genies are the best.  Especially when they are in an army with say Angels.  Cast Create Illusion on those Angels every turn and let the illusions do the fighting.  This is especially helpful in seiges when you want to get that castle gate demolished without suffering permanent troop losses.  Of course, genies are easily nullified by smart human opponents, tho rarely by the AI.  And Equilibris just made the genies better by allowing larger stacks to cast Mass Slow.

Also, Equilibris gave larger stacks of Faerie Dragons the ability to cast Cloud of Confusion (as opposed to singular Confusion which is what they were limited to before).  Have FDs cast that every round and have all your other troops concentrate on eliminating one enemy stack at a time.  The other stacks just stand there like Looney Tunes with Question Marks over their heads.

I like Elves because with Summon they are free and you don't need to return to town or use caravans to increase their numbers.  And, of course, they have two shoots.  But they are hard to get initially (darned Rangers' Guild) and die so easily that they are certainly disqualified from the MOST USEFUL title.

A cyclops is the most useful castle defender (I am limiting my choices to creatures you can hire in towns), altho Poisonous Spawn and Waspworts are nice too if you don't have to travel (altho Vampires are so superior to Posionous Spawn I am always torn between which direction to build--and usually base my decision on whether I ever think the troops will leave the castle).

here is my list:

1st level: definatly (sp?) bandits.  Their range and attack are both superior to any other creature on the battle field. Also good for scouting as they can not be detected by enemies

2nd level: madusas.  Their long range is really good and i especially love the stone attack that goes with it

3rd level: night mares.  Their attack is superior especially when taking out long range on the enemy side.  The terror spell is awesome as well.  Besides that, they come in handy when exploring b/c their speed is pretty good

4th level: BLACK DRAGONS BABY!  These are the best creature in the game.  Flying, awesome attack, just about everything is awesome about them.

(Im a chaos guy. So what?)

Well, my favourites:

1: Halfling. 11 halflings on a castle turret can take out any fourth level creature without problems. Would have said berserkers or centaurs (both have more HP than both ghosts and mages), but the berserk skill gets all the berserkers killed, and centaurs have so little growth..

2: Minotaurs. The only level two units with a really good speciality, and strong units too. Weak against magic, though.

3: Vampires. If you have over hundred of these, you are almost unbeatable. They just take back the life they loose. In the Chaos campaign in winds of war, map 2, the enemy had over 140 vampires in one stack. The I took out about forty, but had to run away the first attack (not a siege attack), even though my army was twice the sice of the enemy's army. I had to take all the castle defences and attacked again, and barely won thanks to some 1500 bandits.

4: Evil Sorceress. Would say Megadragon, but they have so little attack. Evil Sorceresses are weak only againt black dragons, but they are cheaper, and are probably the troops in the game doing most damage (yay, implosion!), and they also teleport, use magic mirror and have good attack. Only weakness is theyre low HP and weakness against magic resistance.

As in all homm games I play with chaos the most and yeah bandits doesn't have the no retaliation ability. They do walk pretty far though and will reach your army in 2 moves. They kinda die in heaps too but they are ok.

Weeird...

Well let have mine..

1st level.. Berserker?!? No way.. Die have a stupid tendancy to die.. YOu can't control them so no chance to  make some tactics with them, and believe me.. tactics before anything else.. I had some fights that scared me out.. What can you do with this.. So instead of the berserkers I'll go for the.. skeletons.. Good HP level, VERY good against archers (as defebders.. you know their ability.. teh get less damage from arrows and stuff.).. Also if you play with a Necromancer hero you get the deal.. many many many skeletons( I know is tend to be cheating but.. hey what do you know... it always does the trick..).. If let's say necromancer wouldn't be allowed I would take archers.. Pretty good archers, they also are very good at the start at the game and teh ydo well.. But gotta be carefull do protect them from melee attacks..

2nd level.. Medusas are good, indeed but they die very very fast, same as the Elves that shoot twice(oh boy, oh boy ).. But mainly these are the creatures I would go for..

3rd level.. This is what I've been waiting.. Guys comman.. Know those creatures called.. VAMPIRES?!? Well let's see.. No enemy retaliation and that AWESOME get HP points from attacks!!.. Believe me.. Seen them in action.. And also the fact that at Grandmaster Necromancy you get Vampires makes me goy CRAZY!!.. But yeah if necromancy wouldn't me allowed I would take nightmares.. You see they have that good spell.. One spell on the 4th level creatures of the enemy or on the magic eneymy hero( or if the enemy is stupid and has only fight heroes I would choose the archer one..) .. Also they have quite good HP and they do well mainly in combat.. Depending on your tactics you might get as well Nagas that are very good with their attack, but thinking that Order is way bad ( too much cost).. I remain at the nightmares as second option after VAMPIRES!!!

4th level.. He he he.. Have 2 options here.. Firstly the good old Devil.. Comman people.. Let's see the fact that he had 50 speed points( that makes him the fastest creature on the battlefield).. well he is mainly an assasin.. You get the enemy heroes and his army is kinda dead..Especially if you take out the magic hero... Also that good spell that casts some ice elementals is good.. If you get lucky, your ice elementals will froze somebody and you are the winner!!  Second option in case Necromancy is out of the question... I would choose HYdras.. Multiple hex attack is way good and also that no enemy retalation...

As a conclusion.. IF I would think well.. Mainly Death and Chaos castles make the job.. Very low cost regarding rosources and money, good creatures and good heroes! What do you want more?

Now.. COME AND GET ME BOYS!!

My preferences?

1st level: Sprites or Crossbowmen.
Sprites with their no retaliation hit and run tactics are awesome for a level one troop. So they die easily - we're not gonna get a level one troop with 50 hit points!!
Crossbowmen with their incresed archery range are also awesome at the beginning of the game, and if you play well you can conserve their numbers with resurrection skill.

2nd level: This one is pretty tough to call.
Medusas have a great special. It reminds me of the Mighty Moo's death stare from HOMM3, and we all love THAT. So yeah they're more useful than Elves imo. Minotaur's block is too unpredictable to be counted on, plus they're not the quickest units on the battlefield either.
Tigers and Nomads have that 1st Strike ability going for them as well, which means you can kill a bunch of the enemy before you have to take retaliation from them. Definetly useful.
Harpies are OK I suppose, but too expensive to build citadel early on for them.
Ghosts have the cool aging ability, plus they take reduced damage from physical attacks, but I prefer cerebri's no retaliation multi-hex attack.
Ballista's suck big style. I always choose pikemen. They can attack from a distance and with a simple bless spell they can really make a difference.
On no account would I take mages over golems. Golems have 50 hit points and take reduced magic damage. Hard as....
But overall I'd say the most useful is the Pikemen or Medusas.

3rd level: Only a few good choices here.
Can I introduce you to a little spell called Snake Strike? Now can I introduce you to a stack of griffins? With unlimited retaliations and this spell Griffins OWN the battlefield imo.
Vamps too can wipe the field even if you've only a few of them. And with GM Necro you won't just have a few

4th level: Black Dragons. Enough said.

I don't like Nightmares that good, since despite their good attack, they suck at taking damage. Ok, they have 110HP, but their defence stats are terribly low, and since Chaos don't have any defensive spells, they die too easy. This can be countered by casting first strike on them, but if you don't have that spell, your Nightmares are dead. Unless, ofc, you use the bandits to take retaliation.
Oh, and sure. the Terror is sweet, but it can only be cast once pr. stack...

As for my own list, it looks like this (I haven't played multi, so I this is my fav units against the AI):

1st level: Sprites. No retaliation gives these creatures an edge over most 1st and 2nd level creatures. They're fast as well

2nd level: Medusas have amazing firepower, the Harpies are good, although they do too little damage, Gold Golems are good at both attack and defense, and the Nomads are excellent at attack. But I'll have to go for the Satyrs, since they have the wonderful Mirth spell.

3rd level: This represents the worst choice to me. Vamps or Venom Spawns? You might get Vamps later on, but they're awfully powerful, and extremely good to have around in the early, mid- and late game alike. The VSs are also good. Build their dwelling on day one, recruit some of them, and wipe the countryside. An early game army with these critters can be counted as a veritable tank of an army. But since I have such difficulties choosing between those two, I'll go on...
Now, Cyclops. These are what has usually tipped the scales in all battles I've seen where Might has been involved, because of their splendid (if they're on your side) field attack. If you've got Sniper's Crossbow, these guys are just the best Might creature around.
But still, there are more useful creatures, imo. Asmodean mentioned the Griffins, and I'll have to agree that they're wonderful. And army with two Druids, where one casts Snake Strike and the other Giant (if not Dragon) Strength on the unlimited retaliations-boosted Griffins, are one of my fav things about this game.
The Genies are still the best though. An Order army doesn't really need any other creatures (although they are nice to have ) than Genies; just make one main stack, and fill the rest of the slots with stacks of <5 Genies to cast Mirth and Peace (if that's the right name...), while the large main stack casts Ice Bolts. Great creature.

4th level: This one's easier. The Might lvl4s aren't any good, imo; the Thunder Birds die to easily (although I hate fighting them...) and the Behemoths use forever in crossing the battlefield.
Deaths lvl4s are a little better, imo, since you can cast Fear on the Devils, Bone Dragons already have no retaliation, and Vampiric touch can be cast on them as well. But the Boners are just a little too slow, and the Devils die too esily for me. Despite their retaliation-eating Ice Demons...
Life's lvl4s are somewhat abmivalent to me. They're both great; 4 Champions a week, and the Angels' resurrection spell are both great additions to your army, but they're still not the most useful. Sure, Champions are nice to have if you don't have much money, but if you have even less money, and are unable to hire more than one or two, they die too easily despite their negate first strike ability. The same goes for the Angels.
Now, I'm sure Chaos have great creatures, but they just don't do it for me. The Hydras, despite being oh so powerful, are too slow as always, and the 1 pr week growth of the BDs are not something I like (although it wuld of course have ruined the game completely if they had a 2 pr week growth without being downpowered). But if you have a decent amount of BDs in your army, you hardly need anything else.
Nature's very special in this game, since they have so many different creatures avaliable to them through the Summoning Portal, and the best creature of these are imo the Mantises. Although I must often sacrifice their slot in the army for other creatures since they only have a 1pr week growth rate, I put them in my army as soon as possible. First strike, bind, and good stats, make this one of the most useful creatures in the game, imo. Especially if I can get them early.
Phoenixes are good creatures, but they lose something, since their comptitors for the slot in the Nature army are Fairy Dragons. FDs' spellcasting ability is precious, although they're not good against magic resistant creatures.
Now, the two creatures I think are most useful; Titans and Dragon Golems. Titans are the most powerful shooter in the game (obviously, since they are the only 4th level shooter ), and their no melee penalty, Chaos Ward, and high HP also helps. Rather expensive though.
DGs take the first place in my most useful lvl4 creature ranking. They're fast, they have more HP than the Titans, and two of these can, if I'm not mistaken (it's been a while since I tested it) take out one BD with hardly any trouble at all, in a weekly growth vs. weekly growth duel. Their special abilities, the negate first strike and first strike combo, is just swell.

So, I guess that if I have to rank them, it would look something like this:

1st level: Sprites - Bandits (only on the adventure map and as fodder) - Halflings - Wolves - Imps (Imp bombs...)

2nd level: Satyrs - Nomads - Gold Golems - Medusas - Harpies - White Tigers

3rd level: Genies - Griffins - Cyclops - Vamps/VSs

4th level: Dragon Golems - Titans - Fairy Dargons - Mantises - Champions - Bone Dragons - Phoenixes - the rest in no particuar order, other than that the Thunder Birds are last...

Phew. My first Heroes-related post in quite some time...

1st level: Either Sprites, crossbowmen or Leprechauns.
Sprites can uncover the map very quickly and pick up lose resources.. also they do well in combat.
Crossbowmen have great value in the early game when capturing mines.
Leprechauns are cool, and Fortune is a wonderfull spell, when you want to lose as few wolves as possible during the first fights.

2nd level: No doubt about it - Medusa. You can shoot a level four creature on a tower with 40-50 medusas doing only 30 dmg but still killing 1 lvl 4 bacause of Stone Gaze.

3rd level: Vampire, Water Elemental or Genie. I think Vampire is the most powerfull here. If you can't kill a lot in one hit, you can't kill them (that's rough spoken, but my point is still good). 2nd will probably be Genie bacause of Song of Peace and Illusions.

4th level: Phoenix. They are fast, have awesome dmg and stats and has rebith(sweet revenge). Also, they are very tough with spells buffing them. I find them better than Black Dragons because you (assuming you have nature magic hero) can give them First Strike, +10 Luck, +10 Morale and DRAGON STRENGHT. With Dragon Strenght on them, Phoenixes are Black Dragons with 2 weekly growth. That's not so bad

Anyway, it seems to be that a lot here agrees that Medusa is the most valuable lvl 2 creature.
