Poll Question:
Do you believe in UFOs???

Well, do ya? I dunno what to believe...Either Area 51 is an alien base on earth, either we are the aliens.

It is of course possible for there to be alien life out there.
Think about it- the only reason there is such vibrant life on earth is because of its atmosphere and position away from the closest star (Sol, our sun), and the size of the planet (Earth) and the size of the star (and more obviously).

In the numerous solar systems in our galaxy (as almost all stars have planets revolving around them, hence a solar system), let alone the infinite solar sytems in the infinite galaxies in our universe, there must be a recreation of the variables mentioned above, perfect enough for there to be intelligent life.

It is impossible for us humans to imagine how the universe to go on forever because we have limited minds, but there is no other alternative. So I'm almost certain that there is intelligent life out there.

But then for there to be UFO's, (Unidentified Flying Objects), by which I believe you mean alien space craft in our solar system, the life out there would have to be so much further in technology than us to be able to transport people to our planet.

I don't think any have ever visited us, but I certainly don't rule out the possibility that there is intelligent life (again because of the variables I mentioned and more), advanced enough soon to visit us.

Why everyone thinks there will be war and violence I don't know. But I don't care because frankly, we most likely won't be around to see it.

There was ,however, a strange event a few years ago. In south america, I believe, a ship landed and some green creatures, named Chubacabras afterwards, attacked the residents of a village. The special forces arrived and they hunted the green men...

we will, for sure someday, unless we autodestruct each other first.
Think of it this way: it took us thousands of years to go as fast as 100Km/h. it took us 100 years to get from 100 to 1,000Km/h.

I say space is very neat, but we have to get a handle on our own planet's situation first.  When you start to think about the infinity of the universe it kind of blows you away.  I don't know if anyone else gets that.  As for aliens, I can't be sure...

rage, I totally agree with you that our planet is not ready to meet others. It would be catastrophic. We have alot of time ahead of us to make things better so let's hope we do it right.
For example, if we have wars with our own people, on the same planet, it would be alot easier to have wars against other beings because the amount of missunderstandings would be unimaginable and far greater.
we are simply not ready for this kind of contact.

The universe isn't infinite. It has no end but a finite volume. It is extremely large though. Even our galaxy is massive and easily big enough to have plenty of intelligent life that may never meet each other.
A scientist at SETI came up with a formula to work out the likely number of planets with life (it's very famous but I don't remember the name) and even using very conservative estimates for the different variables it comes up with plenty of inhabited planets.
I reckon that, most likely, aliens are either with us or never will. If easy interstellar travel will ever be possible then it's likely that some intelligent alien has found it. If they have chances are they'll have had it for a long time. They'd be so much more advanced than us that we wouldn't even know they're there unless they wanted us to.
It's time for me to leave work now and continue drinking so I'll leave this unfinished. It may be incoherant but I've had a few lunchtime pints. I hope you'll understand.

Why do you think the Universe is finite? I mean, no one can prove it, but what happens at the end? Do you hit a wall? What's behind that wall? Nothing? What is nothing? How can there not be a beyond?

See now you've spun me into confusion. I'm pretty sure that the universe must be infinite. As I said, it's impossible for us to comprehend as we have finite minds.

But then... imagine the future, if you could jump into lightspeed and travel forever...
I'm reading this Sci-Fi book at the moment which touches on interstellar travel, how when the ship does the shift into space travel, time slows down because you can't experience everything that fast while you're travelling. So in essence, if your going from planet A to planet B, on a planet the trip could take 100 years, but on the ship only a month or two. And that applies to aging also, the people you go to meet on a planet may have just been born and may very well be dead or scenile by the time you get there, and you are much the same age as when you left.

Interesting concept. The protagonist of this book was born when all humans lived on Earth and were being attacked by aliens, and through the series of books, during his lifetime, the Human race over comes the aliens and meet many more when colonizing planets. This was linked to the alien defeat because they took the technology for interstellar travel from the defeated race. It sounds stupid but the book, the "Ender's Game" series, it sounds quite possible. In the end, due to all the galaxy travel Ender does, his family back on Earth died 3500 years ago, and he is only 22. Heh...

Another concept that was touched on in this book is the matter of informatoin sending over long distances. That means sounds and light waves etc., or in other words speaking to people millions of lightyears away, or sending a file, or broadcasting something. At any file rate, no matter how many times faster than our internet connections, even amazingly high rates would still take centuries to get there. But another technology discovered from the alien race they destroyed was called the Ansible, which allows you to send information instantly, disregarding distance. Sounds weird, but they go into detail in the second book "Speaker for the Dead".

*looks out at stars*
Heh...

Well, I'm not a physicist, I just had the impression that most physicists today believed that the universe had finite volume. If you kept going in a straight line you would (eventually) end up back in the same place.

So, back to the mai topic. I read recently, in a magazine, this story:

On 20th of Feb. 1962, the 1st american astronaut, John Glenn, circled the Earth three times, with the Mercury-6 ship. During this flight, the ship was followed by 3 sferic objects.
One year later, another astronaut, Gordon Cooper was circling the Earth, and a greenish object followed him. The interesting part is that he managed to record a message in an unknown language.

Is that something that humans can do, fly green objects? If so, why would they encounter humans?

Is this poll about UFOs or aliens?
The two are entirely different things; aliens are extra terrastial creatures while UFOs (Unidentified Flying Object) could very well be the latest American secret aeroplane project...

If it's the latter, I say definitely, if it's the former, I say sure. But probably not those thigs that's been claimed to visit Earth...
