Opponents

We all know how everybody likes their stacks, how they like their castles and their armies and their heroes arranged, but I was just wondering, how do people like their opponents?

For me, personally, I think a game of heroes falls into me playing either one of three roles. Student, Competitor, or Teacher. I find that in order to make the most out of your time and the time of your opponent, the two of you need to grow a little from the game. They can either teach you a little bit on how to play better, (you'll know this as soon as they beat you, LOL), learn a little bit from yourself on how to play, or you can both test new/old ideas against each other just to see how everything works. Whichever rate, I always think that there should be some exchange of ideas/tactics in a game and it's always great to walk away with a feeling of having DONE something real! Not just won the game and walked away feeling empty hearted, or lost the game and left, still not knowing why you lost.

Those sort of games are the greatest waste of time, and even if you do improve your ToH score or rank, it's not really any good if you haven't given anything back to the other player.

So I'm wondering... how do YOU like YOUR opponent? Talkative? Silent? Funny? Serious? Do you like them to show you new stuff, do you like them to play like sewer rats, do you like to simply win/lose a game?

Edit: revived!@

I think that you can learn/teach if you play hot-seat.
I've played only 4 games on net till now (not in zone.com but direct IP) - and I can see that it's more competitive playing that way than hot-seat.

Tactics/strategies generally doesn't make much sense for me - but tips are somethin else.

Little tips&tricks which help you being good player. And knowing the rules.

If you think that playing on the net is more competitive than hotseat you are not playing hotseat right.

Rules for hotseat.

1. never be by your opponants during turns.( go to another room and watch a movie have some pizza and beers)

2. while one player has a turn, try to wheel and deal, or decieve other players into alliances, short term partners or patsies.

The between turn time is very competitve in hotseat if everyone is motivated to win, also you are not alone waiting forever for the next turn.

Hmm...

I never had the experience of playing anything except for Risk hotseat, it sounds fun. None of my friends are into computer games, which is probably a good thing so I don't sit here all day lost in all the games.

In online play mostly I look for someone who when we play I will spend 50% of the game thinking I could lose. That makes it exciting and also the time in these TBS goes by much quicker. There are only two other things also, a steady internet connection is beyond words for most games, even H3 is annoying when your opponent crashes, I am always really feeling guilty if my comp locks up in the game and I must reboot because I run so many other programs at the same time, but I can't stand to wait for my turn anymore- the only thing that takes the time is chaining and towards the end of the game when I am manuevering to kill his hero or avoid getting mine killed till I get what I need to win. Lastly a little respect and patience. Even in RTS or Half-Life etc, it is always annoying to have someone 'gogogogogo' augh!  Just as bad is at the first sign of defeat they get angry and either leave the game or trash talk. I can handle trash talk cause it's as fun to dish out as laugh at what they say and it also distracts them. Never give up in a game, something can always happen to change it in your favor. So many games I was sure to lose, opponent had Earth Tome and was Dungeon, etc... but then as I was desperately running with my main army a hero in a ship finds the Air Tome and I d-door right into his towns... you just never know.  It also works the other way, a few games I have been totally surprised when I thought I had overwhelming strength and either crushed or scrape by with less than 10 units at the end of a battle(it's happened that way more than once- especially when I play Necro it seems). Anyway, competition is fun, but too much competition is maddening, but in an enjoyable way.

I have experience both from hotseat and online gaming...

Hotseat is fun with friends but you know your friends and sometimes you get distract what you are really doing: Playing HoMM. Many times our talk goes to some other things and I think it puts the gaming experience down a little. However sometimes when we have good map in our hands and all are ready for some gaming I find it really entertaining. We are not all the same so it's kinda nice some are talkative some are funny. I'm not the "leader" of the pack but more like right hand of the leader and I usually try to put game back in to line when we are going of stream. I have terrible sense of humour with ironic and sarcastic streak which usual gets more tension than any other characteristic with all of us. It's the idea that everybody has different view of the game and how it should be played that usually gives us most from gaming with HoMM.

Online gaming is much more different experience. You don't really know your opponents but I have noticed I like those that talk pretty much. I don't talk so much during the game or at least come with new conservations ideas unless I'm really into it. I get along with some players so well that it is pity slaughter them and end the game sometimes. I have also met those that don't say word or say only like "Hi. I'm your dead. Let's play." It's like undead army coming towards you even he is commanding castletroops. Comes to my mind one opponent that I have played many times with and we had kinda "roleplaying" talk at sametime we played. It was funny when I was necro and he was playing with Rampart and we put some stuff up about what is going to happen next. Sometimes we even told where we were going in the map so it wasn't really so serious gaming.

I would say that I enjoy many kinds of opponents there isn't really only one type that I like. However I'm not sure is it always some kind of learning process when you play HoMM. I think I have learned the most when I have relaxed and just played my own game and not thought all the time am I better than the opponent. Maybe I'm not so competitive because many times I don't find losing so bad (not that I lost so much) because you still can get good game and have fun. However sometimes it's very good to get serious player against with you with some military streak like our Ichon here and get some real war going on.

It can be fun or it can be war, or it can be both at same time...Just but your mind to work and you can enjoy with full heart.

I like an opponent who plays to win, and who concentrates on the game above all else, while playing the game.  I haven't played much on line, so Shae's teacher/computer/student trichotmomy soesn't make mch sense to me.  But I don't like it when people talk too much during games.  Saying things like "15 wood for 15 ore, anybody?" is fine with me.  But saying "Anybody here seen AI?"  ****es me off.  If I want to chat with people, I'll go to a chat room.

Coldfyrius

Seems to me like you are missing one of the better aspects of online gaming. I can see your point in regards to chatters, but it kinda helps to know who's seiging your opponent and who isn't. It's another form of strategy to the game, the communication between you and your opponent, and it can be rich and fulfilling if it's done right. I mean, if I play a random map against a newbie with two levels and I find the blue comp opponent directly south of me then when my opponent says "I see Blue" on day 2, then I know his/her proximity is very close and therefore I can plan out my game much better. I'm always wary about giving away positions, it can cost you the game if you find that you're behind the ball early on.

If people rant about being attacked, then you also know that the chances of them being in a weakened state is increased and you can rush them with scouts in the hope that they're too busy defending to actually waste time taking out your scouts. That way you can scout their lands easily, get a true picture of their strength/weakness and take the offensive to them.

A smart strategist never gives away too much in 'chatting' but also may be wily enough to paint a picture of falseness to you. Propaganda, my dear Coldfyrius, has been used by all military geniuses since communication existed.

Hey great post, Shae.
Actually one of the things that keeps me into Heroes is the wide variety of people that play this game and they come from all different locations in the World. I mean just look at all the different personalities and the little online  Community we have here and of course the Zone is a communtiy in and of its self have u ever seen teh stuff that goes on there!! poeple getting married and flirting and um all kinds of other "interesting stuff". All kinds of different people from almost every country u can think of (and I'm glad they all speak English so well, Lord knows I'm us americans are too lazy to learn anybody elses language,LOL) And what u say is very, very true. Almost everybody I play I learn from Trentang, St_Anfi, Enigma 33,JokersWild,Irnwill and Wpaxson are a few zoners that come to mind. Also one of my favorite people, who has taught me much and has been very patient with me thru all my reloads (cuz of screwing up or getting Disconnected) and has Probably taught me more than anything Qu_Purple. We all learn from each other I say, unless we never talk or never play Mutliplayer, But I personally can't imagine not playing another human. Btw If u've ever played me before I do happen to talk a lot, moslty to make the game more entertaining (I always get LOL's outta Qu) and to learn to suck all the tips and tricks that i can from my opponent.

I must admit I prefer being the student. There aint a better feeling in the world, than walking away from a game, where u learned something new. Allied games are also great, as u have the opportunity to talk about everything and nothing with 2 other ppl, while the 3. is taking his turn.
Best part of being talkative, is that u meet new ppl, and next time u come online theres a few more to talk to while ur waiting for a game

well, I like the talkative kind of opponent best... one of the reasons i prefer 4 minute turns

I must admit I talk very much during early phases of the game, get silent when the game gets exciting (btw, on a closed map, will he come first?) and get talkative again when the game is almost decided.
Sometimes talking gets difficult because of language barriers - had a game with some Korean guy once, who didn't say a word whole game... I lost and said thanks for the game and all he said was "u good too"; felt good anyway

About the student/teacher thing... if I have an easy win, I try to tell my opponent what he should have done better imo (of course if he wants to hear only)... I usually don't ask my opponent why I lost.. I learned most by checking saves... I save almost every turn and after game is over, I check the saves (hotseat mode) and replay turns of my opponent (especially battles).

I prefer Hot Seat. Things go faster and you can talk with your oponent.

Well, i can call myself teacher. When i play with people i just cant shut up and always advising something. I just cant stay silent when people do stupid things like taking Navigation skill when there is no water. I had 2 students who are now really good players, i've told them everything i know about heroes and now sometimes they defeat me (but now very often )

Viper, it's pretty easy to kick some butt when you get to see all of their moves, lol!

No wonder you prefer Hotseat then!

I played hotseat a few times, first with my ex, then with some friends who live where I do. Playing Hotseat is a bit like playing poker. You can't show your hand until you've made your move on the enemy. For you to be able to view everything that they enemy does is not only cheating (for me), but takes enjoyment out of the game. I understand that being a teacher does involve watching, but playing a game with a student should not involve you as a player. You should just sit back and watch and offer advice.

It's pretty rare that a teacher is defeated by a student. After a while though, the teacher stops teaching and becomes a solid opponent, although the student will always be learning. If you keep the teacher mentality, then your rate of growth will be much slower than your students, I think.

And eventually, your students will be better opponents than you are!

I like my opponents to be good at playing the game and being sociable as well.  Most of the time in multi-player I trash-talk my opposition into uniting against me.  Probably bugs them to no end, but I find it to be very entertaining.  But, when I've played with the creme de la creme of toh, I've had to mind my P's and Q's(I wanna play again sometime).  If my opponent trash-talks me I know, good or bad, I'm gonna have a fun night.
I don't like people who don't feel competitive or can't take a joke.  I'm playing on-line to have fun and people who take the game way too seriously have no place on the battlefield with me.
One thing that irks me to no end is when my opponent tries to flirt with me.  I'm here to have fun, not make up for the fact that my opponent(s) doesn't get enough attention from their husband or the opposite sex in general.  It makes me feel awkward and uncomfortable.  Some(read most) men would feel flattered but I'm not one of them.
BTW, can someone do me a favor a relay a message to Greystole?  Tell him that as soon as I can get back into the zone, The Gootch is gonna kick his bullet-catching butt into next week!!

I like to flirt in a game. Sorry if that would make you uncomfortable, Gootch, but playing the opposite sex is most often about ummm... flirting with the opposite sex!

Some guys like to flirt a bit and have a laugh, others are very cautious about how they say things. I never push the sexy stuff when I'm with guys who I think aren't really interested in something different. As an opponent, you always have to be entertaining in some form or another. Trash talking is something that I've never really tried, I always try and be a nice player, funny and quick witted. Brutal chest beating is a guy's domain, lol.

My biggest weakness I think is my humbleness when playing other people, especially ToH people. I never become confident in chat, because confidence is a poor defence and an opponent generally doesn't like the 'you're finished' kind of mentality that might be brought to the game.

But yes, I have been a trash talker a few times, mostly around people who are rude (zzzzzzz....) and don't know what they're talking about. I once took on three guys in a ffa map 1 minute turns. Wasted the host and then proceeded to eat the other two alive before they realized that they were all doomed to lose right from the very start and they hastily dropped out once they saw my main.

Funny game, but not particularly enjoyable. I made a bad opponent, because I outclassed them and bragged about it.

yucky girls

Why would playing with the opposite sex be about flirting with them? Those are different types of games...

I wonder about all you who spend so muhc time chatting. The only time I chat much is in the closing part of the game when either you are in final battle, or just defeated main and sweeping up the remnants. The rest of the time there is not enough time to have a meangingful conversation. Even on 4 minute turns I can spend all 4 minutes clicking through heroes and chaining. I usually try and chain through at least 8 heroes in a 2 min game though I can barely make 6 most of the time, and in a 4 min game I can manage to chain thru 10 or more if there are many neutral towns. It's just a like a chess game, planning your moves several turns in advance so your armies end up where they need to be at the right time.

Trash talking, it's not about beating your chest at all. You demean your opponents ability and make fun of every single thing they do, watching in tavern closely also allows some good comments just to show them you know what they are up to, sometimes you are wrong, and many times yo7u lie to them so they think you don't know what they are doing, trying to lure them into a trap or something. It's all about what you reveal, I've played many games with peopel who chat alot. They tell me all about their progress even if they aren't directly reporting what they do. You can figure out alot from ancillary data they include in their comments. It's hard to ignore that stuff too- since I can figure out where their hero is and what armies he has alot of times- I can ambush them. I've finally been playing alot of randoms and an undervalued skill that I find useful is actually scouting, at expert you can see into other corridors or past monster guards far enough to notice one of their heroes run by. Then you know the directin they are coming fr0om and can leave a hero with fast creature and logistics parked nearby in case they leave a main hero resting or a reinforcement portion of their army heading somewhere that you can take out if you chain your main army there.

The only times I have trouble trash talking is playing all the Hk or Japanese and Chinese gamers on. I know some Korean so I can insult them brilliantly, but the others... well, you are limited to "you play bad" etc. lol Of course some people don't understand that trash talk isn't alway sserious, in fact I've only actually said those kind of thigns seriously about half a dozen times in 100's of games.

As for taking something away from games... maybe for people relatively new to the game they will learn something every game, but I haven't learned anything new in the last two years. Maybe if I bought SoD, there are some new things to learn there I beleive, but I am waiting for H4 now. I still like to play, and even don't mind teaching someone, especially if I play them a few times and then see they are a Lt or even higher that same season. Hopefully some of the tricks I showed them helped with that.

I think that many people are either stubborn or persistent. People might think that these words are synonyms (and they are), but the difference is that one is someone who is opinionated and the other is someone who never gives up. It is more likely that the persistent people will be a student, but because that they never give up, someday they will become even beyond teachers. Stubborn people think of themselves as beyond teachers but they soon discover that they never amount to the persistent people. These are the two split human personalities, and believe it or not Ican bet the majority of the people are stubborn rather than persistent.
