I have 2 wolf spiders, one I had contained in a jar the other lives under my bed (I often wake up in the morning with dry spots of blood, I dunno if the two are related).

Now and then there's new additions to the family, but often I throw them out the window by hand since they tried mating with my girls without my explicit consent.

I found a porcupine in the woods. Porcupine because porcupine:

Foreveralone

More foreveralone

They said I could become anything, so I became a cactus:

I is free?

After I captured her and put her in the makeshift penhouse, I was amazed how many quills she left behind in the blanket I used to help catch her. Her lower back is semi-barren now, but fear not, our brave lady can regrow them reasonably quickly.

I wasn't planning on turning her into a permanent pet or anything, but I admit I was a softie and let her loose sooner than I anticipated. Porcupines are so incredibly timid. You'd walk up to the cage and she'd just hunker off into a corner with her face pressed against the wall.

She's lucky she was so darn shy and cute, because porcupine is actually suppose to be very sweet and tender, and my dad has a fully-loaded workshop for butchering. It's right up there with roast duck. There's somewhat of a black market with porcupine poaching in our state that the game commission had to take steps to help reverse. My state is basically the forest moon of Endor and there's guru porcupines around here (Sarah Speed is retarded. Porcupines rule the night):

bitey feeding on a jumbo cricket:

better view of bitey feeding on jiminy:

man, this cricket put up a fight. bitey hadn't fed in a month or so, and she had to rebuild her web for this bad boy. jiminy was like a little tank, it was a real battle for bitey to get this little peckerwood under control. damn thing tore it's own leg off trying to get out of the hundred or so strands that bitey kept weaving around it's legs. it was biting everything it could; the web, it even attacked it's own leg and was chewing on it like a berserker cricket. i swear i could see the little devil foaming at the mouth, and i could picture it snarling obscenities. bugger went out like a champ.

after the battle was over(after bitey had bitten the thing 5 times on the legs, and once on it's face next to it's eye, ffs), bitey was covered in what looked like sweat. she kept cleaning her body for about 30 minutes after the battle, getting this moisture off her body with her legs, then cleaning her legs with her mouth.

i'll have to feed bitey more often. she was really weak when she went into battle, i was worried that the cricket was going to get it's evil mandibles into her. but she was careful, slow, and steady; and prevailed. now she's able to get nice and plump again.

Carnivorous insects are a fun pet just for the sake of feeding them. I kept a large brown mantis for a while and she would tear through multiple insects (moths, friggin wolf spiders, beetles, caterpillars, stink bugs, grasshoppers) in a day. A mantis is an amazing creature because it's the only insect that is capable of turning its head, so when you enter the room it will actually turn and look at you with its alien head. They're fun to pet too. You can take them out and let them crawl around on you. They're very classy.

@ blizz: i wish i could have a mantis, they're my favorite insect. i have found them rarely out and about, but i never had anything to keep them in. they're absolutely fearless; as a kid, i remember staring at one that was on an old washing machine outside my aunt's house once; it turned it's head to look at me, and i thought "cool!"

then it jumped onto me, and was racing up my chest towards my throat, to apparently slash a jugular or carotid, or to pluck out my eyeballs. first time ever dealing with one, and it freaked me the **** out(i just brushed it off though; i didn't kill it). i've been more careful with them than i have with spiders, since then. i have a lot of respect for a creature that will attack something so much bigger than they are, and apparently with viking-like ferocity. there is no bug cooler, i think.

Mantis won't ever bite you unless if you maybe physically grab them suddenly. You just lay your hand out and they'll crawl on you.

They stay completely still and then use their hands for snatching their prey. Once the bug is in distance of them, they have an almost 100% success rate of capture. They are one of the most successful predators in the world. I'd throw a moth in the cage and come back 2 minutes later and there would just be 2 severed wings laying on the bottom of the cage and the mantis sitting there like "WHO DONE IT?"

Their weakness is that like other top predators, they expend a ton of energy. Takes a lot of grasshopper steaks to feed one. She had babies and the mantises just ended up cannibalizing each other. The pet store didn't have baby fruit flies.

i was bitten by a katydid once as a kid. it didn't feel good. i wasn't worried about the mantis biting me, it just freaked me out that it jumped on me and was running towards my face like it meant to do something. i was a kid, but to be honest, if the same thing happened today, i would probably still brush it off with the speed of panic.

lol @ the second paragraph.

yeah, that's something i've worried about with bitey. apparently since she was a juvenile when i first got her, she didn't have a chance to mate, so i don't have a room/house crawling with poisonous spiders. i've seen males while i was out and about, but i never had anything to keep them in, to bring them home for bitey, so that she could pollinate the surrounding yards with more of her kind.
