1. Castel: I just HATE that town. Why i should play with humans in a FANTASY game?
2. Stronghold: WAY too weak. At least in the early game.
3. Fortress: Same
4. Rampart: I just don't like the theme (the music, the atmosphere, the heroes etc.)

I can play with aything else, although i prefer Dungeon.

Castle, Dungeon and Rampart simply doesn't suit my style.

Castle:
The maps I play, I often won't have enough gold for Angels on week 1, getting stuck with low gold, low monsters, so I often feel it's risky to go for Angels week 1 and in stead of goes for fewer dwellings, includes castle and uses some of their very good level 1, 2 and 3 units for early fights.

Still it's far from optimal, with inferno I often get devils and can even buy some week 2, and are much stronger, with more Heroes than with Castle.

Oh and they don't get Armageddon (Castle).

Dungeon:
Simply because the maps I play on it's impossible to get Dragons week 1 (too many buildings required), though they've some great critters all around (I don't like level 1 or level 6 though, but both can be very good early in the game), it still doesn't compare to build the level 7 in week 1. Not to mention I've never got Armageddon with this town, eventhough the likeliness should be quite high.

Rampart:
Don't get me wrong, the Treasury is great, and eventhough the monsters of this town (or is it the dwellings? I don't recall) are very pricy, the treasury makes up for that and some more, when I play I often tries to get a rampart as my second town, simply for that building, they also have some impressive growth rates, and the third fastest town aligned creature in the game, which is great, but again what really takes me off is that on the maps I play it's imposible (again too many buildings required) to get level 7 on week 1, though I really like their lower level creatures, eventhough they in a 1vs1 isn't as great as Castles or Dungeons low level creatures, they still have some unique qualities that when making a team work, makes them even better.

I'd also really like if Rampart could get Armageddon, it really suits their level 7. Probably the second best creature for Armageddon right after Phoenixes.

Though it's off topic, the towns I like the most are probably Inferno, with Tower short after, and then probably Foretress or Necropolis. And I do also like Stronghold and Conflux.

I don't really "hate" any of the factions.

Well to put them in order from dislike to like:

1. Inferno. If they are weak in MP that's not really my business, I can compete with my inferno against my other faction play. I somewhat them because they are devils, so they're just about torture and evil and such. Also they are based around fire magic, which I don't like that much. Also I hate fighting against them mainly due to efreet sultans and devils being so damn fast, the former with fireshield decimate my lower tier units and the latter always strike first after phoenix and kill something important.

2. Castle. Not that fond of the fact that everybody and their mutt hits my crossbowmen. Also, they're all about order, which I'm not exactly fond of, their tier 5 and 6 are priests and knights, both of which I resent, and tier 7, angels. I have a bone to pick with angels too.

3. Rampart. Luck is their domain and I am allergic to it. Also I can do without the ridiculous bikini babes on the pegasi (which is why I hate heroes V dungeon). I think the otherwise 1337 flying horses are spoiled altogether because of that. I do like their grand elf pwnage, their dwarves and dendros are hard as rocks and unicorns and gold dragons both look really freaking great. In fact gold dragons are prolly the best looking unit in the game.

4. Tower. Mages and shooters galore, and snow, their town and their native territory is indeed pretty hard to look at when you start the game. Nagas, otherwise an ok unit, are out of place imo. Their priciness kind of turns me down, and there is conflict between their supposed goodness and their units - gremlins, again the freaking nagas, and to an extent genies and gargs too. Anyway after my experiences with the Academy from Heroes V I also feel that their faction, oriented on spectacular magic, misses the superior 3D graphics more than any other factions (some other factions did not however miss it one bit).

5. Dungeon. It's a good faction but it's in the same game with some great factions. Let me just say that black dragons and especially minotaurs are made of pure awesome, and the masses of lowly troglodytes with no eyes have a charm of their own, as well as the evil eyes, weirdness champions. But I don't like their evil nature (I'd rather beat the crap out of them and bribe all their mino's and blackies to my side) and the air of a slave-based society they have, with a few all-powerful members and endless hordes of downtrodden have-nots.

6. Conflux. It's definitely the most set apart faction, a point in their favour, and their elemental-dominated roster isn't a problem as far as I'm concerned, but like the Dungeon they just don't have the charm of my fav's. However they are not evil and that is always a plus from me Most of their faults revolve around the fact that they seem to be an after-thought, a faction slapped onto the game for want of anything better. But they are well put together and thought out so they are a worthy H3 faction, better suited to me than the majority actually.

7. Stronghold, 3rd best faction in my book. Fast and furious attacking is not my cup of tea normally but Stronghold makes it my cup of tea when I play them. The combination of their speedy troops and certain key skills (read: tactics) is quite dominant as well as easy to play and some of their units, especially thunderbirds and behemoths, are just too cool. Worst part is their heroes being dressed in leather underwear. It's so 30-years-ago and lame. But stronghold still rocks.

8. Necropolis, 2nd best for me. There aren't a lot of things that are better than the unfeeling undead chugging along in stupendous numbers, never mind morale, motive, pain, distractions, they will just keep coming with unbreakable resolve. And in the end their skellies WILL swarm you into the ground. Although they are evil the Necros are just too cool to dwell too much on that. Also they seem the least evil (yet still most scary) of the 3 evil factions for me and definitely the most engaging to play. Trying to get your skellies to grow at a geometric rate and crushing supposedly powerful creatures with legions of this humble unit is to me extremely satisfying. The Undead of the Heroes III and V games have brought me a lot of enjoyment.

9. Fortress, my favorite faction, depending on mood Necro might tie with them. First of all in Heroes I absolutely love to pile up the Defense as high as it will go and fortress is the faction to do that with. I don't really think of a hero as completely developed if his defense is under 50
Secondly I like ALL of their creatures. If mobility is an issue with you remember that water magic is your territory as Fortress and teleport is water magic IIRC. Which is weird, but so is most of the game
Thirdly I love the idea of a swamp faction, I don't know why, I'm not fond of slowly sinking to death or being eaten alive by mosquitoes, but these guys just feel right. They're neutral as well, neither evil which equals stupid in my head (i.e. it's just plain dumb to harm stuff and people you meet just because you feel like doing so - at least have a damn motive ) nor goody two shoes. Which means they won't destroy wantonly (or just a bit), they know what they want and they aren't afraid to grab it.

As for their shooter weakness I treat that as a challenge to get my hand to hand unit usage skills up. If you gave them another shooter they'd be so crazy strong it wouldn't be funny.

That is unless you play on Impossible. Which i genrally play in. Dungeon may be expensive as hell but all it's creatures are VERY good for that tier (besides scorps), and i prefer that slow but powerful advance.

Yes, yes, true that
Getting a bit of each resource can take a while, unless you get lucky. I don't play on impossible tho, I prefer hard - same stuff as the AI and they play at their best. Can't argue with that.

I always felt uncomfortable with any town with only one shooter...except Necropolis(second in my book to Castle.)
I just don't like towns that leave you with only one ranged unit. Tower I can forgive because you can get three shooters, but only if you upgrade. I just don't like having to move all but ONE unit up to attack. I like to hang back and protect my shooters, and usually only go melee if I need to or won't get myself a Pyhrric victory(besides, with the single shooter towns other than Rampart, that one ranged unit usually sucks.) After all, to reference an old saying, "Two heads are better than one." Also, the enemy usually blinds your only shooter, leaving you stuck with either wasting a spell or giving up ranged combat altogether. I could just go on and on and on...but I'm gonna let someone else go now.

imo, it's not the growth that's overpowered.
Rather, it's the speed.
Getting to move first is a great advantage that far surpasses that of the phoenix growth.

with the immune to fire, it all boils down to the speed yet again.
First cast armageddon. (Flux is imbalanced in this way, phoenix, magic elemental, energy elemental + armageddon)

honestly, if phoenixes had a speed of, say, 13. They wouldn't be so good anymore, even with growth of 4.
They also benefit less from creature dwellings, getting 25% bonus growth compared to 50% in other lv 7s.

What most people gloss over is that phoenixes are fragile. Yes they have massive growth, but they're still fragile!
600 hp growth worth of lv 7 units per week is on par with say, titans. Quite a lot, but you're more prone to losing them.

Reduce speed and they won't be so overpowered anymore.

Conflux, Conflux, Conflux.

There are not enough words in the English language to express my unease with this town. The creatures are overpowered, it feels cheap, and it looks like it was rushed.

In my opinion, I think it scarred a perfectly good game.
