Inferno. I just can't get used to it... Lvl.1 is pretty much useless, no flying units except Devils... Meh.

Hello, I just have a quick question regarding the basics of Heroes III.

What is the difference between Damage and Attack? Because when I read the options it says that it's how much your creature gives in damage...

But isn't that damage?

Sorry if it seems confusing, I just want to shed some light on this subject.

A hero's attack skill number is added to each oh his creature's attack rating, increasing the amount of damage they do in combat.

Damage is calculated like this:

1.Each creature has a damage range.A random number is chosen within this range for the attacking creature.
2. A damage bonus is added/substracted depending on the difference between the attacker's Attack skill and the defender's Defense skill.
If the attacker's Attack skill is higher, then the damage is increased by 5% per point of difference (up to a max of 400%)
If the attacker's Attack skill is lower, then the damage is reduced by 2% per point of difference (to a minimum of 30%). The resulting number is the damage dealt.

many of these things can be found in the homm3 manual

The only town i've never enjoyed playing was Inferno - all other had something that made them attractive. I cant see devils wearing cracker-jack clothings. And the demons with that rock-band jackets... ?

Conflux is somewhat boring, though the landscape is beautiful.

Fortress, because whenever I choose this town and a Hero that comes along with it, I know I have a fat chance at winning.

Inferno - I just dislike this town really.
Imps and Gogs aren't cool.
Hellhounds are too weak otherwise I'd like them.
Demons look kinda stupid, I think they coulda been a bit more creative.
Pit fiends, a unit I actually like.
Efreet, they are strong but I really don't like them.
Devils - They look like the bad guy out of an old cartoon. Again coulda added some more design there.

Tower - I actually like this race but:
I don't like Gremlins or Gargoyls, they coulda done more with the animations and looks.
Heroes, I hate the heroes. I generally pick a hero that gives resources and prey a good one pops up in the tavern.
Resources, why is it such a pain in the ass to build anything in this town ><.

Castle - Overplayed
I actually really like Castle, the design on Archangels is just awesome for me. I dislike the fact that it's extremely strong though. Archers look very stupid imo, I'm glad that they get upgraded ASAP.

Conflux - Lack luster!
This race I've just never had much desire to play. Certain elements of it are cool, others just tell me not to play it. It's not that I hate the race, I'd just rather not play it.

Necro - Almost forgot about these guys. The playstyle doesn't suit me and overall I dislike the features. The only creature I really like is the Dread Knight.

All the rest are great and I'll happily play any of em. Dungeon ftw tho. Although Dungeon is terrible for level 7 and level 6 units, once you get them up it just floats my boat. Generally I hunt a Sulfer mine ASAP then look for a trading post. Generally if you can get a traiding post you can get Red Dragons to accumulate untill you have enough for the upgrade. After that it's just a case of hoping your Minotaurs / Eyes / Medusas can keep you going untill you gather enough gold to support a better army.

Comeon Uruk-Hai. Personally Inferno is my farvorite town, but I'd like to have the freedom to say I don't really like castle, rampart and dungeon, because in general I find the level 7 units to be too hard to get in week 1, without people telling me my fighting skill sucks.

Though I agree that demon farming is really what makes inferno shine, in my opinion. It's really an amazing town, incredible power through sheer quantity of demons (and it's cool demons have low quality, because they're the quantity unit), a unit to collect the demons that is otherwise average, the in my opinion best level 6 unit especially because of it being the fastest non level 7 (together with dragon flies) and because it's combined with fire immunity (inferno always goes first when playing the blind + wait tactic) and finally arch devils who, depending on the environment either will perform as a top level 7 unit or as the best level 7 unit (if you try to test in sheer power, with wait, etc. arch devils come out as the second strongest, and if you take into account that they become even more powerful under certain condition they really show they power. Too bad their low health really makes them weak against destructive spells, in my opinion, and in general they need to be the first to strike to work well).

Though the biggest plus, I think, is probably that the inferno only uses 4 slots, like other towns, such as the necropolis, not using all slots can be a huge advantage, either for units through diplomacy or simply placing 1 single fast unit in each slot to take the first round retal and taking the speed of the inferno into consideration, it can change the entire battle field.

Not to mention that inferno is the town that earlist in the game can use the powerful armageddon + fire immune unit tactic and often it's not hard to later change efreeti sultan with phoenix for this tactic, where conflux can't get armageddon that easy and dungeon may get armageddon easier, but in my opinion have a hard time getting black dragons early.

It uses four or five slots, depending whether devils are present.

Option 1 - magogs, demons, pit lots, efreet sultans

Option 2 - same + devils

Both options leave place for angels + wyverns to add to your army.

Btw, magogs are the most underrated creature in the whole game. They are simply amazing at times. I personally do not recommend converting gogs to demons unless you have lost too much of them and cannot form a decent stack. Magogs give you a strategic advantage because the enemy can neither block his shooters efficiently, nor gang bang one of your units properly because of their fireball attack. A hero with archery and good attack skill makes a perfect main for inferno. I personally like Calh, even in SOD he CAN be formidable hero. Personally i like him better than Marius. Another perfectly capable hero is Nymus.

Not to mention the generally high number of dwells on lava terrain. One simple pit fiend dwelling makes a huge difference. Pit lords deal astonishing damage and have quite a good speed. They can become a power stack as early as 1 2 1 / 1 2 2 - 16 pit lords deal insane damage.

I mostly play Random Maps now, and I cringe whenever I get Conflux.  I can't really explain my reasons.  It just hasn't clicked for me as a legit town.  Ironically, I spent many years wanting to play as Conflux prior to getting a version with the AB content.  Every once in a great while, I'll relent, but it has yet to win me over.

Fortress - so many weak creatures, it doesn't feel as a proper "alignment" and Hydra as the lv. 7 creature is not only uninspired but ridiculous when you know others have Angels and Dragons.

Inferno - I only like it in HOMM4 where it's merged with Necropolis, demons are not my style.
