Castle or Capital?

As a noob to online play (i played against and with against AI one of my friends years ago but its not as if we played enough for us to learn anything you learn from that online play) I would like to be able to be a battle goddess when i get my copy of HOMM3:C on Monday.

At the very least, I want to rock my friends at hotseat XD

So... first week is no doubt the most important time in the game. Taking out neutrals, getting mines, dwellings, building up your town, these things need to be done ASAP.

So, and this question might be hidden away but I want to bring it up again for my sake, what does everyone prefer going for first?

I think you'd be hard pressed to find many people (if anyone) who go for Capitol ASAP. If you do, you will require huge amounts of gold, plus you will get no new creatures other than those you have to start, those in the dwelling(s) your castle starts with, and the troops in the tavern's first 2 heroes.

Taking the creature path as opposed to the economic path might indeed seem like economic suicide since you're spending practically all your gold, but remember, you have to spend money to make money. The creatures you get will help you clear (or ally with) wild neutrals, thus giving your hero EXP. Also, you are free to collect any treasures that the creatures were guarding. Plus, if you come across any neutral towns (or enemy towns) you can conquer those with your troops a lot more easily than with just the 3 hero start force.

Plus, if you're playing a small or even a medium map, taking pure economic is military suicide. Odds are if you're playing against a halfway decent player, they'll show up on your doorstep at the beginning of Week 2 (or Week 3) with an appaling amount of troops considering what you have. Try as you may, your arrow towers and $4000/day income can't beat nearly 2 or 3 weeks worth of another castle (unless you're really lucky).

Hope this helped. I have no online experience, however, this kind of knowledge and strategy has been ever present  in this forum and is continually resonated by those who play online.

Those were my thoughts as well. Most of my play has been on XL maps against AI with an allied human or against a human that wasn't as good as me and hessitated to attack neutrals more than I do.

And thats saying something, sadly.

Very good points, I most definitely agree...

I'm still curious to hear the other side to this though

What's said above is true, but if you play just for fun with a worse opponent money works too if the map is rather poor, and may even be better if the map truly sucks and you play with strong monster stacks. In a hotseat game I don't want to bore my friend to death so we most of the time have 0 to 2 fights per turn and don't make any hero chains, and since we look at each others turns anyway I try to keep just a step ahead of what he does so that we will have an interesting end fight. There's no fun if you see week 3 that you have a large advantage and that you will win easily when you duke it out a month later, would be better to restart. When we want to play short fights we just choose a small instead, rushing someone when they see what you do doesn't work that well.

For specific strategies check out some threads that are in Table of Contents that's sticked in this forum. Most of them have some good information and the link to the threads all say what it's about. Just remember that you must always be willing to adapt, most information is with toh maps in mind and they are all rather rich. If you happen to play some weirdo map and the endfight is week five 7 titans will be tremendeously better than 8 giants and without the capitol it could be hard to achieve and still have enough money to get the rest of the troops out.

I have always gone for the Capitol first. I've never really looked at the strategy of Heroes games in too much depth, though, because the AI isn't enough of a challenge to need me to, and I don't have any other opponents.

see

this is what would qualify as the perfect n00b thread.

Because all "advice" here is n00bish.

Here is a fast introduction:

get 4-8 heroes FIRST days depending on how rich the map/template is.

take ONLY gold from chests unless you are lvl 20 as a hero and need approx. 500 exp for next level and you got a tree of knowledge next to you or similar cases. But in general ALWAYS go for the gold.

Use those cash to get dwellings first week, the more the merrier usually since if you get lvl 6-7 dwelling first week you will always have these creatures to buy out.

Whereas your n00b opponent who goes for capitol will be 1-2 weeks behind when it comes to units.

Most online games end week 3-4. So if you follow given n00b advice above your opponent will have twice your army, probably twice your stats as he have been able to use more units longer and expanded faster.

So basically.. go for capitol day 8 and experience from chests and youre dead.

For further explanations around why only n00bs goes for capitol day 8 and uses 1-3 heroes who takes experience from chests just look around.

A question 4 the vets: Why do you need 4-8 heroes so early. Do you pass along the army to each of them, so that you can clear everything faster (that seems to be the only reasonable thing)? If so, dont you fail to accumulate the experience in your main hero?
I usually dont go above 3 heroes week 1, cos i terribly lack money. but thats probably wrong approach.

Thats really expensive, that ammount of heroes... is the pay off really that good?

Not doubting, curious.

Don't you need to buy a Castle, to be able to buy a Capitol.

So you would always end up buying a Castle first...

This once again heavily depends on the map. If all resources are guarded and there is not much room to explore, then it's not going to be worth all that much. In that case, it would be better to develop one primary hero to gather the experience, which makes it easier to take down neutrals and a "scavanger" hero, who picks up the lose resources so that the primary hero can use his movement more efficiently.

*Sigh* This is all so much easier in Heroes 4. You no longer need heroes for that. You can just send a single imp to grab stuff.

Ive changed my mind.

Actually giving this as an advice to the approach n00b is more n00bish.

So this will make you The new HC n00b!!!

congrats!

you take the fights you can get and by that gain experience and then use the resources/gold you fight for to buy better dwellings/creatures and be able to take away the bigger blocks. And then you keep going like that until youve killed off the biggest block.

Yes, but you know what I do?

I go for the Capitol (as opposed to creature dwellings), I only have a single hero, and I always take experience out of chests. Why? So I don't have an amazing army when I finally meet the AI so I actually have to use field strategy instead of just 'tell strong unit to attack other strong unit, strong unit wins'.

Of course, against a player, that's a different story, because players aren't retarded.
