Screen Resolution Problem (H3)

Was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question I have.  I just recently decided to start playing Heroes 3 again and on a different computer then before.  I have running windows XP, have both expansion packs and I have a 19 inch monitor.  The problem is when I open the game up the screen is not centered and hangs over the left side of my monitor leaving some of the game off the screen is there anyway to adjust the resolution or place of the screen?  Also if and when I do get the screen centered again the resolution is set at 800x600 I would imagine and dosen't fill up all the space on my 19 inch monitor so there is a large black border around it any way to fix this as well?  Thanks for any help.

Some questions to get you started

I'm not totally sure about XP, but here's what I've come up with.

-Is your game running full screen or in a window? Full screen doesn't have the File/Display/Help shown at the top; it's accessible through the key F4, I believe.

-Does your computer's video card support 800x600 resolution?

-And do you know if any other programs display funny on this computer?

-Some computer monitors have these little knobs that you can turn to alter the way your screen looks. Even though you can try it, I'd advise against it until someone else confirms that it is okay.

I hope this is a little helpful.

I am running in full screen and I have not had any other problems with other games/programs/etc.  It is possible I could move the screen over using the buttons on the monitor but then when I exited mydesktop would not be centered and I would have to repeatedly change it back and forth everytime I play.

My video card is an Nvidia GeForce 32mb and im sure it supposts 800x600 because I have had it higher then that.  Does heroes 3 support higher then 800x600?  Is there anywhere that I am able to change the resolution of heroes, I know a lot of games have setup programs to adjust that kind of stuff but I can't seem to find anything anywhere.

Ok I tried using F4 from full screen and it when to a windowed screen and it seems to be fine this way but if anyone knows how I can fix it while in full screen it would be a big help.

Some more stuff to do...

I don't know that much more about what can be done, but I'll try.

-I forgot if this is possible in XP, but right-clicking on the desktop will allow you to open Properties and check out stuff about your desktop and related properties. If you get there, can you report what resolution it is set on there?

-There is a bit in the Heroes 3 manual I'm reading from my computer, dealing with screen resolution. I'm figuring what to think, but it reads:

--------------------------------------------------
Full Screen vs. Windowed Display

During your gaming session, you may hit the 'F4' key to switch between full screen and windowed display modes. In full screen mode, the Heroes III game fills your entire video display at 800x600 pixel resolution. In this mode, you may press Alt-Tab to minimize the game screen and display the Windows Desktop. To return to the game from the Desktop, select it from your Taskbar.

In windowed display mode, the game appears in a standard Desktop window. Since the game displays at 800x600 resolution, it is recommended this mode only be used when running Windows at 1024x768 or higher resolution. In windowed display mode, you gain the following pull-down menu commands:

1. File
-Quit: Closes the program
2. Display
-Full Screen (F4): Switches the display to full screen mode
3. Help
-On Line Manual: Starts the help system
-About: Displays copyright information about the game
--------------------------------------------------

That's all it really says. Mostly stuff you know already. I checked the list of Heroes 3 hotkeys but there wasn't much there to help fix our problem.

One last thought- have you tried posting a question on an online help forum for computer problems? You can explain what's wrong, tell about the game and how the screen isn't centered properly. If they know anything about it, I'm sure they'll be a big help.

I hope this helped further.

I've tried to do this when I played, but when I hit F4 (I just felt like playing it in a window), I was given an in-game error message that said that the game must be played in 65563 colors and asking me to change it to that in the desktop. How can I overcome this if I want to play Heroes III in a window?

F4 is made for playing in "window mode". this only works if your display settings of windows is set to that color resolution. Rightclick on the desktop, chose properties. There u see a window where u can change your settings. Change the color settings (color quality) here, then u will be able to play in F4 mode.
But there is NO way (at least not to my knowledge) to change the ingame resolution from 800x600 to any other format.

^ Change Windows colors to 16bit!

Oh i was bit late. 800x600 is the max resolution allright. It's only zoomed to full screen. Some of the newer games can't be played whit less than 32bit colors but Heroes 3 is opposite and hafto have 16bit colors to work in window (in 98/200/XP anyway)

Alright, that worked! However, is it possible to edit the shortcut such that Windows automatically changes it to 16-bit only when running the game, and resumes 32-bit when not playing the game?

Also, the scrolling, I have to move to the edge of the window to scroll, not my whole computer screen. Is there a way to fix this, apart from using the minimap to scroll?

Nope. But it's not that big deal. Map scrolling is bit annoying but you get used to it.

A Solution --- it worked for me

I've been playing HOMM since 1995. I have them all but my favorite is still HOMM3. I played it on all of my computers with just about every OS Microsoft made.

Windows 2.0 (DOS yet..on an old NEC) was the first system we played HOMM on but quickly upgraded to a better computer that was loaded with Windows 95. No problems playing it there. Nor with Windows 98 or even that lousy ME. XP wasn't too much of a problem...nothing I couldn't figure out how to fix. I got rid of SP3 so it would keep on working. I don't know what it didn't like in XP's SP3 but it did nothing but crash after I installed it. Heck, HOMM3 even worked on Vista...but in XP/SP2 mode. I never had to set any OS to 16 bit either.

I just got another new computer. Windows 7 this time...loaded with XP Mode...just in case. I had no problme in loading HOMM3 from my 12 or 13 year old CDs. The problem was that no matter what I tried...and I tried them all....the size of the game on my monitor screen was miniscule...maybe 4"x5"!

I tried everything I read on here and elsewhere...nothing fixed it. I run a CRT monitor (about 2 years old) because I like it better for image editing and the flicker rate on the flat panel LCDs bother my eyes. I susppected that perhaps my monitor was the problem.  I borrowed an LCD monitor from my roomie and hooked it up to my system. Aha! The new monitor hooked to my computer produced a full size game on that screen.

It would seem that I needed to buy a new monitor. I hated the idea because one good enough to handle my needs and a good refresh rate would be pricey. I decided to try one more thing. In all my attempts to discover why my roomie could play Homm3 on her Vista OS and flat panel LCD, I examined her setup and compared all settings to those on my computer.

I had noticed easlier that our refresh rates were quite different (factory defaults). Her LCD was set at 60Hz...with a range of 60-75Hz.
Mine was set at 85Hz with a range of 60-85Hz. I had wondered if that could be the problem. Since buying a new monitor seemed to be my only option, I decided...what the heck...why not try it.

Eureka! I now have my game playing at full screen with the refresh rate set at 75Hz. Why in the blazes that makes such a different is beyond me but it sure did.

Both my Dell and my roomie's SystemPro have an NVIDIA card. Why her's was set at 60Hz and mine at 85Hz, I can only speculate. A geek, I am not....just an experienced HOMM3 enthusiast that has spent many tens of thousands of hours playing the game...and an awful getting it to work right on new OS.

btw - I decided to install my "backup" HOMM3 disc. I bought the "complete" version last year just in case my old CD decided to quit one day. Time to order another one! LOL

I hope this helps someone. I apologize if my low tech babble inuslts those that know a lot more than me.

i bought a new 17 inch laptop with a screen resolution 1920x1080. when i tried to open heroes 3, it didn't fit the entire screen leaving black spaces along the sides. Is there any way I can make it into a widescreen 1920x1080 screen resolution? thanks.

I joined this forum specifically to comment that this fixed my issue on my vizio 720p tv screen.  It was set to another Hz, as soon as I set it to 75 Hz it started functioning properly and no longer cutting the edge off HOMM III

An even Better solution is to download heroes three HD. Advanced graphics options, choose exactly which resolution you want, use black boxes to make the game less stretchy, anistropic and antialiasing.
