Preserve 4th Level? An intellectual excercise

For most of the towns, we have gotten a fairly good idea of the lineup, based on the Gamespot preview, screenshots, etc. Especially at the big (relatively speaking) 4th level slot. They are:
Academy: Dragon Golem/Titan (walker/shooter)
Haven: Angel/Crusader  (flyer/walker)
Asylum: Black Dragon/Hydra (flyer/walker)
Necropolis: Bone Dragon/Devil(?) (flyer/walker?)
Stronghold: Behemoth/Cyclops King(?) (walker/shooter)

Note that the Devil in the Necropolis is conjectured, for reasons I won't go into here. The cyclopes seem a good bet for the Stronghold, and we've been told their attack has been beefed up to an area attack.

Now we come to the Preserve. In the one town screen shot we have, the 4th level structure seems to be the pyre that Phoenixes come from, so it seems that we have a flyer there. So, any guesses what the other 4th level might possibly be? Before you say "Why, it's a Gold Dragon, of course!", let's think about that.

Some people have been assuming Gold dragons would be in the game, based on the opening movie shots. However, those shots show a battle BEFORE the destruction of Erathia. In the shots from Axeoth, we've seen no sign of Gold dragons. Given that golds were just a slightly toned down version of blacks (albeit faster), it doesn't make any sense for them to be in the new creature lineup. Of course, 3DO doesn't have to make sense. But, they've been pretty adamant about the 'every creature is special' thing.

Also, as Lord Paul pointed out in another thread (and was inferred in one of Mara's interviews), at 4th level, you seem to have a choice between a ground unit, and a shooter or flyer depending on which building tree you established. So, logically, the unknown Preserve 4th level must be a walker. But what?

Let's go back to the screenshots for a minute.
We're pretty definate on the following creatures in the Preserve lineup: Wolves, Sprites/Pixies, Unicorns, Elves, and Satyrs, and there's a strong suspiscion Leprechauns are in there too. There's been talk of a basilisk, but I think that cave structure may actually be for Satyrs. (probably a Forest Grotto or something like that). The Basilisk doesn't seem to fit in with the whole woodsy/nature theme of the Preserve, and since the medusa seems not to be a shooter any longer, that would mean another walker with stoning ability.
That gives us the following (tentative) lineup for the Preserve:
Level 1: Wolf/Sprite (walker/flyer)
Level 2: Satyr/Elf (walker/shooter)
Level 3: Unicorn/Leprechaun (walker/spellcaster)
Level 4: Phoenix/Unknown Walker

So, what fits in here, given that the Preserve is aligned with Nature? It's either something from Heroes 3 or something new, obviously. If it's something completely new, I don't think we've seen it yet. (The only powerful looking creature we've seen that doesn't appear in any of the towns is that sea monster, and that's fairly obviously a neutral.)

If it's something from Heroes 3, the only thing that seems to make sense off the top of my head is a beefed up Dendroid. The other possibility is that 3rd level structure on the Preserve screenshot is NOT for unicorns, and that would leave room for Unicorns to be the other 4th level.

Here's my guess...

Lvl1: Sprite & Leprechaun
Lvl2: Elf & Wolf (remember homm2 wolves came from caves)
Lvl3: Satyr & ? maybe Gorgons ? pleaaaaaase !!!
Lvl4: Phoenix & Unicorn

About Haven the 2 lvl4 units are pretty sure (the guy explains it in the interview) as well as behemots and cyclops are sure for stronghold (same reason) and black dragons and hydras for asylum (multiple screenshots).
About necropolis, what about this Venom spawn we can see several times with undead troops ?

I'd say that it would be a Gold Dragon.  Showing hints of a creature or person in a game and then not putting them in the game has always made people angry.  Remember how Sonya and Kano were in the background of Mortal Kombat 2 and everyone was pissed that they couldn't play them?  I think 3do has been in the game business long enough to know to not do that.

Besides, every single high level creature from every Heroes game is in Heroes 4!  You have all the level 7's from Heroes 3, and the level 6's from Heroes 1 & 2 (Cyclops, Champion/Paladin, Pheonix).  So why would they leave out the Gold Dragon??

This game is going to be a haven (no pun intended) for high level creature players.  We even have a new one!  (Golem Dragon)

Well, that's my two cents.....

Because it's redundant? Other than the speed increase, a vulnerability to 5th level spells, and needing crystal rather than sulphur, a Gold dragon is just a Black with a shiny paint job.

Because the Preserve seems to already have a 4th level flyer? You yourself pointed out the walker/shooter-flyer split in another thread. So logic says the other 4th level is a powerful ground troop.

Don't get me wrong. I like Goldies. But there's nothing special about them. And, if the Phoenix is more like its Conflux incarnation, I'll take the speed ,self resurrection, and higher growth rate where I can get it.

Let's you and I just agree to disagree here?

And your two cents is worth a lot...even if I don't agree.

Addendum: After making this post, I went back and looked really hard at the Preserve screenshot, and I may have the answer to my own question. Would somebody else look very hard at the 3rd level dwelling and see if they think that's a pool of water in the middle of it? If it is, what was originally identified as a Unicorn Glade may well be an Enchanted Spring, which means:
A) The Unicorn is probably the missing  4th level walker!
B) Pegasi made the cut!
(The second is probably wishful thinking on my part, but it would give the Preserve a 3rd level flyer.)

My guess:

Possibility 1:
Lv 4 >>> unicorn
Lv 3 >>> dendroid
or vice versa

Possibility 2:
Lv 4 >>> unicorn or dendroid
Lv 3 >>> pegasi

Possibility 3:
Lv 4 >>> "gold crystal dragon"
i.e. with the appearance of goldie, but is a walker like crystal dragon (tuned downed). With specialities like crystal dragon or maybe take a new speciality e.g. can generate small amount of gold e.g. $10 per turn.

Just guess for fun.
I prefer some surprise instead of figuring everything out before release of h4.

Now I'm confused. Do you choose creature for each level after first level or do you choose from two different building trees after first level? I mean do you choose creatures for each level invidually? Preserve with Necropolis has been my favorite town or they were before. Doesn't Tower seem little bit too strong with Dragon Golem and Titan? Also Dungeon seem to have two good 4th level units. At least if we compare them now. It's hard to say how people can choose between Angel and Crusader. I think Unicorn will be with Phoenix choice for 4th level unit. I see no reason why Dendroids aren't in the came so I think they are 3th level units. Isn't it odd that 3do haven't published creatures yet? Didn't they publish creatures or they were known long before Heroes3 came out? I think Heroes4 won't be coming out in long time if they haven't even shown what creatures are in the game. Haven't they decided the list yet? Is the balancing of those creatures so difficult? I hope they "pump" preserve up because Rampart wasn't so good in Heroes3 as Sorceress wasn't so good in Heroes2. But I still love those towns and wanted to play with them. I would like to see towns now little bit balanced better so we can all enjoy our favorite towns by their theme and not by because they are so strong.

Huh... I thought the Rampart was strong.  Maybe I was wrong?

Unka, you are right.  Having the Gold Dragon would be redundant.  I would just like it back for the sake of tradition.  Personally, I never really liked the Pheonixes.

...And I still want to hear your theory about the vampires in Heroes 4!

There's no right or wrong, merely the joy of the hunt

Since I've considered this mostly as a puzzle (which we've been given a few pieces to), if I'm right, I'll be somewhat pleased. If I'm wrong, I'll probably slap my forehead and go "DOH!!". Either way I'll be amused. The new information about the preserve being able to build a structure to recruit neutrals makes speculation here even weirder.

Paul, if you really want my thoughts on vampires in the game, check the thread "Heroes4 Necropolis Speculations" here on the Altar of Wishes. Last I knew, it was back on page 3 or 4.

And now on to my next hunt. <Elmer Fudd voice>
