Make the game easy to mod

I highly doubt this would happen, but I think that for a game with a fan community as strong as HOMM, it is about time to make a game that's really easy to mod. And I mean, Morrowind-easy to mod. I don't think it would be so difficult for the creators to allow importing of custom creatures, custom towns and allowing a complete modification of the skill, magic and all other systems in the game.

Of course, when it comes to multiplayer, both players must be running the same version but it's fine because the modifications would not actually overwrite game files but can be loaded independantly. This way, when a multiplayer game starts, the players choose what "build" of the game they wish to use.

Now, why do we need this? Well, for one thing it's totally fun, and we will see tons of new creatures and towns added all the time to make single player more fun, to make custom maps, tc's (total conversions - where the game is completly modded to run with a different storyline and maybe completly different units and towns) and stuff like that.

The second reason is even more important: the creators of the game would not be nearly as good at playing it as our multiplayer veterans. If a modding system would be included, the veterans would be able, through many arguments and debates, end up creating a version of the game that'll be more strategic and balanced than chess.

The third reason is "why the hell not". I don't think it would be much harder to make a system that's easy to modify than one that is not. It doesn't even have to be all that user friendly, but we should not have to hack the game in order to modify it.

The only reason this would not be such a great idea for ubisoft is that expansions would not be quite as useful (who wants two new creatures and a new spell when they can download 100 new creatures and 50 new spells?)

I do, however, believe that overall sales would go up rather than down, because the game would live long after it has been released, and new people will start buying it once they see just how many new stuff can be downloaded.

Eventually, Ubisoft could sell "packages" of mods. These will be things that can be freely downloaded from the internet but installed conviniently in packages where only the highest quality mods would be included, and in a logical way. The best thing about this is that they won't even have to pay anybody to be making these mods, but reserve the right to publish any mod made with their utilities and for their game.

Your average offline gamer would definatly buy these packages - especially if the price is not too high. I mean, rather than a 2 creature mods we got from 3DO (that still managed to make them some money) they can advertise 100 creature mods.

What do you think?

MODs are fun.  They add so much more to the game like crazy themes, new rules, different styles of play.  MODs also give the game a much longer playability live.

Yeah!

And with a 3D engine (they said that's almost final, right?) making mods could be easier than every. For example, they could make the option that when one makes a dragon, the model can behave the same as all other dragons in the game, but use a different skin and/or model. If they wanted to take it one step further, they could even make a special program for making monsters using parts (after all, half of the monster ideas we get these days are just combinations of existing ones).

Up

Here's hoping the development of the game is not beyond the stage when this proposal may be implemented.

Not bad idea. I like it.
But I think that I will left modifying for other players if they create some program.

El Bumpo !

...and to keep my post constructive, no homm game was mod-friendly, ever. Which is a shame.
