Let's write a play

Rules:

For now, no registration needed.

Each post can include either a stage direction (Verona. Enter ROMEO, TYBALT.) or a single block of dialog by a particular character (MACBETH. Is this a dagger I see before me?)

You are only allowed to use characters from the cast list, and follow their behaviour patterns as established from previous posts in the thread. It is possible to add characters to the cast page, but first you must propose them, in italics at the beginning of your post.

The play must remain, at least to some degree, serious and on topic. That is not to say that it cannot include humour, but it should not be stupid or random.

You must follow the same formatting as this first post.

Note that the setting is described very briefly, and can change somewhat during runtime. The date, country and even world of the play have not yet been set as of yet.

Analog Noise - A Play

Cast:

PILATE, the protagonist.
IAN, a painter.
YURI, a thief.
ETHER, a merchant and immigrant.
LENNOX, a poet and alcoholic.
ZOY, LENNOX's wife and a dancer.
ANNE, a bartender.
MINA, a child.
MEPHISTO, the devil.
DORIAN, ????
MAXWELL, ????
ROMAN, ????
MARIA, ????

Act I, Scene i

A street. Enter YURI, PILATE.

YURI. Nighttime falls yet again, and for yet another night I am to see the moon mocking me from its dark kingdom, mocking me for I shall never reach it in this lifetime.

YURI. Like a silver plover, lighter than air, it floats through the darkness, retreating only when the sun returns with an ocean of blue sky. [-sighs]

PILATE (from across the stage). I see you not through the veil of rain, stranger, but I hear you speak of the returning sun. Are you a prophet?

LENNOX. Can you tell me where I live, prophet?!

PILATE (approaching from across the stage). Prophet! Speak not so harshly of the drunk, for we have all walked that winding path of his. Besides, know you know that he is a poet, and therefore has every right to be drunk. Is it not so, Lennox?

Lennox: Indeed it is!  For lo, already I feel more stanzas building up within me.  Truly being filled with drink increases the capacity for creativity.  Is that not so, Prophet?  Or perhaps your harsh words unto myself betray you have some personal distaste for drink...

YURI: Aye, it is so, for I may be a thief, but I steal
only things, whereas drink is a thief that steals
your dignity and leaves you lying like a dog in
the gutter. That is the price for a brief glimpse
of the muse which you worship.

Enter Zoy, stage right
ZOY:Aiyee husband mine! Once again I find you drowned in drink. Oh so salubrious you are when in company of Messrs Vodka and Rum, but oh so heavy you are to carry upstairs after you pass out on our floor.
Get away home with you for I am at my tether's end and patience has fled me.

YURI. And all this, all this while married? And the poor soul knows of your affair with the bottle and yet does nothing! Some people who walk this Earth deserve to have been swept off it years before.

Enter MAXWELL, centre

Light switches to MAXWELL, dim stage

MAXWELL But what of the Devil and his treacherous ways? Is he to be ignored and accepted as one of those who chooses the path of the infidel? Or will the lord avenge his wretched soul with merciless fury? The path of the unbeliever is far to complex for the simple minded.

It is I, Maxwell! What is a childs business wandering yonder at this hour of night? The end is nigh, it is not safe for her, nor us! The devil is near, but he is also far! What are we to do?

MEPHISTO appears, while no one is looking, in a buisness suit and a bowler hat. He steps into the middle of the conversation, and in between the people.
Mephisto: Citizens! The devil is not to be feared! He is but the imaginings of adults pretending to be children! Though some call drink "The Devil", it is simply alchohol!

Mephisto:
The Devil? Who is he to trouble us
but poor men's ramblings, drunken, lost,
without a gainful place where they might work.
'Tis thoughts like these that make a devil walk
among the men, while bottles clang and beer
flows from the mugs unto the floor and then
the men awake to find themselves unwell.
The Devil? No. None walk upon the Earth
save fools'. They will find naught to blame but drink.
