Imo, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth cannot be asharmfull as disdain, ingorance and megalomania are. These three, combined with Pride and Avarice, can destory the world on their own. (Throw in Envy and Anger and you have Armageddon)

Seven deadly sins is actually one of the things that is a bit esoteric in Christianity, the sins were designed specifically for the intelligent monk, rather than the average monk or person.  Those are things that will prevent you from the union with God. Be it prayer or meditation. If any of those 7 is in your mind at the time, you will fail. Hence they really are "deadly". Spiritual progress is not possible (aka. dead) with any of these "sins" at your mind so none of them can be removed by me.

I'd take away pride, envy, and greed, and replace them with ignorance, shortsightedness, and low self-esteem.

I'd take away sloth for pride... Hell, I am already arrogant, so... I'll go for gluttony, instead of pride, because I really don't eat enough.

Lust is just too fun to be a sin.
That is your reason?
Here's why it fails on another "sin":

[sarcasm]
The Devil also doesn't trick you either (religiously speaking ofc). I mean the devil trickery are never fun at all, that's why people fall for them! Because they are not fun or promising!
[/sarcasm]

You know even in "normal" life, "too good to be true" we call them.

Lust is one of the Many Sins that will keep humans behind machines, and I'm talking mentally obviously.

Pride falls second (by the way, pride in this context means the arrogant-type where you think you are so great and awesome, not the humble one -- i.e ego and such, not "I'm proud of you" type, hope you get what I mean). Envy is a lesser.

Anger might be one, although sometimes it's beneficial

I love it how they are called in Dutch lol!

Avarice/Greed: Hebzucht
Lust: Lust/Onkuisheid
Sloth: Luiheid
Envy/Jalousy: Jaloezie/Afgunst
Anger/wrath: Wraak(zucht)/Gramschap
Pride/Vanity: Trots/Ijdelheid
Gluttony: Vraatzucht/Gulzigheid

Lol, that must look weird for non-Dutchies, but they really sound menacing, trust me ^^

I wouldn't remove a single thing. I would simply add ignorance, hypocrisy and intolerance, like Svarog and Lews said long ago.

All the other sins I have either tried or witnessed (or both), and trust me, they all deserve to be called sins. That said, I'm not taking them too literally - for example, I view gluttony as reckless spending of things that could have helped some other people in greater need (see the European Union laws about the size of food which would dictate that everything which doesn't meet their pointless standards would be thrown away, while people are starving in other parts of the world).

God or no God, if you think about it, you'll understand the reason behind every mortal sin. Of course, avoiding sins does not rid one of all his problems, but I think it can be a rather good foundation.

However, Grigori Rasputin said an intriguing thing or two about the issue:

"Accept life as it is, as God gave it to us. Stop worrying about where sin comes from, and how many prayers a man must say to escape it, or how long he must fast. Sin, and then you can truly repent. But, if after doing all these things sin still lurks in your heart, prayers do no good. You still remain a hypocrite."
(disclaimer: this is a summary of his thinking, probably not the actual quote)

What intrigues me is why machines don't have any of our sins but they have few of our virtues? (read: current machines btw, I'm not even talking sci-fi).

Btw, that's an excellent quote bak.

Hello everyone,

First of all I have a bit of trouble with the very concept of DEADLY sins. I just can't conceive human feelings or behaviors that are so loathsome that are death worthy.

But If i'd put the most humanity defiling behaviors in a list, it would look a bit like:

1 - Omission (Let suffering happens out of cowardice to take action)
2 - Prejudice (Judge people for that which is not a choice)
3 - Indoctrination (Force children to adhere to a code of conduct or esthereotypical behavior out of fear and deceit)
4 - Injustice (Do harm by denying others their chances)
5 - Fatalism (Preach hopelessness by pushing others the belief of inevitable doom and human unchangable imperfection)
6 - Truculency (Dominating another sex, creed or race through social, psychological or physical violence)
7 - Insensibility (Underestimating or intentionally ignoring the suffering of others for personal gain)

About the old ones:

Avarice - It is not necessarily bad when the old man decides to spend a couple of bucks less.
Envy - Can be good or bad, depending on how you act when confronted by it. Ex: My neighbour has a brand new Porsche. Positive reaction: I wish I get one of these someday. Negative: I wish he drives this beauty into a concrete post.
Gluttony - Proven to be only self-harming when not attached to insensibility.
Lust - Oh.. the excess of sex is the beggining of moral derailment. NOT.
Sloth -  There are moments where lazy days are more than a extravagance, they are a necessity.
Vanity - Only self-harming when unattached to prejudice, truculencyor insensibility.
Wrath - The complete dampening of the inner impulses is as utopic as its fruitless. Being angry shows one is alive and feeling.

Just some insight on the matter, I hope it was not too boring.
What do you think?

W.
