I found it completely ironic that socialism/communism uses a biblical allusion to get their point across. I thought religion was our weapon to wield...
(which places me in the awkward position of an atheist conservative)

Here's a Socialist site where some modern socialists write articles and analysis on modern events. Be warned though - the guys are fanatical Trotskists and extremely negativistic to anything non-Trotsky soocialist, which is basically everything.
If you want comprehensive critique on capitalism its an excellent site though.

Btw, isn't Ibrahim Ferrer a musician in Buena Vista...? I think I was at a concert of his once, at this jazz festival in my 3rd hometown...

That touches on one of our largest problems: We're kinda like Protestants. You know the Catholic "joke" about how Protestants separate into different churches once they disagree on something?
I kinda get the feeling that the same is the case with us, sometimes...

Hmmm, Trotsky was interesting fella. And its not just "something" that he disagreed with Stalin. As a matter of fact, after his exile, he criticized Stalinism more than capitalism. In a large part totally justified. If you're looking for the "qureling Pretestants" among socialists, I'd say its all the various leftist fractions (social-democrats, socialists, communists, peasants) in many Latin American countries that failed to form a united front and overtake power.
And yes, Ibrahim Ferrer is member of the Buena Vista Social(ist) Club, comrade terje.  Its great that you went to his concert. He had a concert here recently too, but the bloody menagers raised ticket prices, cause its kinda "in" now in Skopje to listen to Cuban music, and only the snobs got to go, and sleep through the concert. It wasnt that expensive, but not the money that I would give for fun, unless its a fav rock band.
I think I have a deficiency of appropriate music pieces for this thread. I appeal for more to the working people of HC.

Arguing communism
On an unrelated topic, don't you just hate arguing about communism with people from the ex-USSR? They have no valid arguments and think that "Oh, I've been there. Trust me, it sucks."
I'm not even a communist, but I tend to argue for it when I feel that stupid points are being made by the opposition.

I agree with Tej. There are very few Russians who have fond memories of the bombs. Many remember having the best education system in the world that happened to also be free, and good sports teams.

Possibly this is the opinion of people who were young when USSR collapsed and all they know is that they had lots of bombs then and now everything is bad.
Besides, the USSR was arguably not communist and definetly not Marxist. This is probably the best response for people such as IYY who find themselves arguing with brainwashed tools of the capitalists.
