Members cannot close threads?

Why is this? I can understand why the deletion of a thread is not allowed, but a thread should be able to be closed by the topic creator after a certain period of time that it has gone without posts. That way, mods can easily search out which threads have been deemed obsolete by their creators and can either restore the thread, perhaps providing a reason, deleting it, or leaving it closed so people can see it. It may make mod's jobs easier and could prevent random thread necromancy in the future.

So what do you think? Should this idea be implemented?

High Possibility For Power Abuse

I think it's a bad idea because some members might try to use this for their own selfish reasons. I won't name any names who I consider to be a possible abuser. Simply think about the top 10 threads in HC. Think what might happen if the thread creator of one of those threads became angry, perturbed, or simply had their own agenda(i.e. april-fool's joke). They would have the power to affect all the other members who have been using the same thread. That's not fair at all. Some might even resort to threatening to close the thread if things don't go their way(again I'm not naming anyone specific).

I think the purpose of a moderator is to set an example of being responsible. That's why they have more priviledges/powers than regular members. They've obviously convinced Valeriy that they are more responsible than the average member and would further seek to use this high degree of responsibility to better the community..

I always thought it was just to send an IM to one of the Mods in the forum your thread is in, and ask her if she could close it for you?

I thought that if the thread starter deleted their initial post, the whole thread vanished, with the starter losing an amount of posts equal to the total number of replies in the thread.

Also, an addendum to terje's post, if no mods for the appropriate forum are online, I would suggest bumping the thread, and saying that you want this post, and any subsequent posts deleted, before closing the thread.

I looked all though the Tribunal.  I thought there was a thread about this before.  I think I might have even started it?  Well if there was one, I think it's been deleted.

Maybe closing your own thread without penalty is something for the 6 red stared members?

I agree with IM'ng a mod, and bumping the thread with a request to close/move.

One a new thread is created it really stops being the 'property of the poster' and becomes a part of the community. It is unfair to the participants in a thread to have the topic closed while discussion is still going on.

Once a thread has been inactive for a period of a week or longer, it becomes a matter of moderator cleaning and I would think that's the best time to suggest closure/deletion.
