Bah, its not about eye candies at all. it does seem like an arcade, but since its 3d u can zoom out and get a straegy.
i love the detailed and realistic style of graphics. i think its gonna a be a full shot if h5 was like that.

Unless you can selectively zoom out only the landscape objects it doesn't change much IMO.

AOE3 seems unrealistically good. I doubt I'll be able to render it.

It would be great if H5 would look like AOE3. But devil is in the details and if you zoom out to a square-shaped castle or the creatures have only about 6-8 possible 2D directions to face on the map, not much would be achieved. I would give away some of the details in order to make the movement more fluid. Unfortunately H4 had none of these qualities, e.g. buildings and creatures missed the superb detailing of previous series and the movement of heroes on map and creatures in battles was fragmented.

nah

nah, homm isn't about really all that awsome graphics, that's probably a big reason why not many people like mm9.

i think that it depends on the thread: in one thread we must say that graphics is important and we don't like bad graphics, in another thread we must say that graphics is unimportant and good graphics is bad because it compromises gameplay.

Right. And we should separate "good graphics" and "realistic graphics". Realistic graphics is good for RPGs and FPS, but not exactly for strategy/tactic. The first are about controlling a person or small party adventuring on a map, while latter is about controlling the entire map. Look at Blizzard: the relative sizes of important/unimportant objects are less realistic in WCIII (strategy), than in Wow (MMORPG). If one has to zoom in and out and maybe even rotate just to see what is going on on the map - it sucks for strategy. It is a level of complecity that adds nothing to strategy, but in order not to make the game a complete mess, one might need to reduce the strategy to simpler (Bob) level because of that. Another fear that I have is designers thinking: it looks like a virtual reality and therefore it has by default all strategic/tactic possibilities that the reality has...

Such graphic is fine if everything (including shadows of leaves) have a meaning or if the unnescessary stuff can be pushed on background and important things highlighted.

You might as well play a strategy with tetris-like graphic, why not, if it has the same gameplay as heroes. But thats you. See, most people play heroes because of the enjoyment it offers to experience such a rich mythological world. Its a gift to the senses, as much as it is a mind-dazzling material. Its only the automated heores maniacs that consider graphics to be but a nuicance whose only role is to slow down online gaming.
Therefore, I qualify your opinions as non-representative of the mainstream heroes players.
A good graphic can never be bad, as long as it doesnt get in the way of gameplay. In a non-real-time strategy however thats almost impossible, since you can take your time not to miss any of the objects which realistically blend with the environment. But in time also, you'll get used to recognize them instantly anyway. So, i really cant get you people that say good graphics is actually a bad thing.

Err, I was not complaining against good graphics at all. I was complaining against overwhelming realism. If your question would have been "do you want good graphics in h5?" I would of course have voted yes. However, the question was "do you want H5 to have exactly the same graphics as AoE3", and that I do not want. Sorry, cannot post right now any good screen what I want to see.

Ohh man that would be so wicked awesome!!!

Nah but it would be great, with those graphics, they look pretty nice. I don't know whatchu guys talking bout, it would certainly make the game much nicer to play.

As it seems unlike most people here, I think that good graphics and colour like shown here are important to a game. It's not really that much of a factor in HOMM but it is in many other RPGs.

Take Morrowind for an example. The typical scene of it is bland, grey/dark green colours that nicely blend into one almost monochrome scene. This can be very dreary especially in such a vast, widely explorable game and can suck the fun out of it at sometimes.
Although with Morrowind, it's such a good game that the atmostphere and the low quality graphics aren't enough to make it unenjoyable.

Another contrast is Fable, where the graphics are cutting edge and the colours are exaggeratingly vibrant to an almost stereotypical scene of a hero story. The high detail scenes make it great to explore and most of the fun is just seeing how your character looks and turns out, and how he fits in with the surrounding climate.
Again, the game is not as good as Morrowind but the graphics and the colour make it fun to play.

I'm trying to argue here without repeating what I've been writing over and over again in other threads about graphics. So:
I don't think realistic graphics are desirable. In fact they're unachievable. how would a realistic battle between 1000 3 feet-tall dwarves and one black dragon (let's say 100 feet tall) look like?
But as many of you already pointed out, "realistic" does not superimpose "good".
I don't know about you, but I'm pretty old for stories. If my employer would know I'm into HOMM with passion he would despise me...(let alone I'm writing this reply from work)
But when I first played H2, it felt like opening a page from my childhood stories, and that felt good. That's why I'm not looking for reality in this game, but for things that look good in stories. If I want reality, there are zounds of other games to choose from, like AOE and Caesar (to name just my favorites). This one is about magic and I couldn't find this any place else. If Ubisoft continues on the path of Manga toons characters, they'll lose me as customer and probably gain 100 kids instead. So....

i am tempted to take this sentence out of context:
Quote:

..and it should have mythological world style graphics.

imho graphics is extremely important. the game should have suitable graphics rather than the most detailed, most expensive and most realistic graphics possible.

The next gen graphics seem to be so far ahead of todays. Several games coming out in the next couple of years where we already have screenshots look similar to this quality (eg Oblivion, FEAR, AOE3 (obviously), etc).

Although I doubt Heroes 5 will tout its graphics like some others will, I think we'll be impressed with them at any rate. I just hope I'll be able to play it without any upgrades.

"I'm trying to argue here without repeating what I've been writing over and over again in other threads about graphics."
Oh sorry, I must have missed yeterday one of your posts when I was checking the list of the threads where you've posted.

"I don't think realistic graphics are desirable."
Fair enough.

"In fact they're unachievable. how would a realistic battle between 1000 3 feet-tall dwarves and one black dragon (let's say 100 feet tall) look like?"
This isnt what people understand under realistic graphics. Its about the design and the look, not the models, rules etc. which go under realistic gameplay.

"But as many of you already pointed out, "realistic" does not superimpose "good". "
Yes, although when I was talking about this kind of graphics (AOE 3), the argument that came up against it was that its not good because it requires effort and time from the programers (which is usually the case for good graphics). therefore, something simpler is needed, with less attention given, since its not that important. And thats what I completely disagree with.

"But when I first played H2, it felt like opening a page from my childhood stories, and that felt good. That's why I'm not looking for reality in this game, but for things that look good in stories."
Fine. Same about me. I like stories too, but I like my stories to sound and look as convincing as possible.

"If Ubisoft continues on the path of Manga toons characters, they'll lose me as customer and probably gain 100 kids instead."
Manga? I hate manga too. It has nothing to do with realistic graphics.
