homm2 post patch sound co

I have homm2 installed on a sub-ghz processor comp with win2k.  After applying the latest patch (h2w10_13) the in-game menu (effects) says that "Digital sound is not currently available on this system." and only the MIDI music works.  Before the patch both the effects and cd music were completely operative.  I also tried the 1.2 patch on a fresh install and got the same problem.  I really, really want to play with sound, but would like the bug fixes that come with the patch.  Does anybody have a solution?  I googled for hours and found NOTHING on this.  Forgive me if this question seems n00bish.

Update.  It seems that cd music depends on the drive that the cd is in.  The cdrw drive doesn't seem to allow the music, while the dvd drive does.  Well, one problem down, one to go.  Still can't get the digital sound effects to work post patch.

Update 2.  I reformatted and reinstalled the accursed windows (needed to do it anyway) and that took care of the digital sound problem.  Now I get to lose games to the AI, yay!
