Your typical week 1

Hola

how your typical week 1 goes? I know there are lots of possibilities and it depends a lot on the map (richness, open/closed, etc...) but there still are some guidelines that you follow. Let's say that you play closed random xl with medium richness.

Aims for random XL...medium richness

Castle: Cavs and castle or citadel (often run out of wood)

Rampart: Unis and castle, not too hard to get. Elf upgrade early week 2 and buy em out.

Stronghold: Beths and castle is possible, if not, Rocs + Ogres and castle, or Beths + citadel

Tower: Many different approaches. Mine usually is upgrade grems and get naga/citadel

Fortress: At the very least...gorgons + castle. If wood is strong, Gorgons + Wyvern + castle

Dungeon: Lacks a week 2 strength (mantis are weak) Try for minotaurs + castle and buy out the shooters. Mantis if resources are good.

Inferno: 5 or 6 efreet start of week2 is a must so Efreet/Citadel or Castle. Pits as well if gold is good, though make sure those 5 efreet come out day 8.

Necro and flux are usually disallowed on random xl

As for strategy, that differs from player to player. Crypts, weak treasuries and weak medusa stores are your best friend. Dont be scared to chain to distant essential resources...and if possible, get through the first break for a second town, not only for the income but for a marketplace.

always go for capitol for extral large map. gets u all the basics(market, mage giuld) and the castle while creating a generous income. this usually takes i week then u build up the dwellings. when ever i dont use this tactic i usually end up with a need for a market or i am low on gold. to me this is the ultima tactc on big maps.

yes but i find that when i go for dwellings instead of the capitol i end up with no money and many creatures in the castle. the enemy comes, takes the castle, buys out the castle and im dead.
well the question is what would u do with an xl map and i'd always go for the money on such a big map. when playing rampart on a small or medium map i will usually go for grand elves early, necro i will go for vamp lords and catle i will go for royal griffons or crusaders. but on an extra large map, the enemy aint gonna take your castle on day 6.
also look at what u need to get a capitol. market always comes in handy, blacksmith is helpful early and the mage guild is a must for a magical player(me being one, on both levels). the castle has also got me out of many situations where i was taken by suprise

Doesn't work that way in the real world tho.

Spend what money you can on buying 5 or 6 level 6 creatures and hit treasuries/banks/stores/crypts + chaining from hero to hero all through your area. Also get gold mines and do money build in town 2 if you have it. This is where your income comes from

Quote:
well the question is what would u do with an xl map and i'd always go for the money on such a big map.

Then a good player will kill you everytime. Money is secondary to MAP ADVANTAGE. Map advantage is everything and to gain it, you need your creatures as early as possible.

Quote:
catle i will go for royal griffons or crusaders.

Griffins are weak and crusaders are slow. Cavs/champs and marksmen are the best early castle combo.

Quote:

Market you get from town 2, nearly all templates you can get a town2, blacksmith is relatively useless unless for some reason you get a ballista hero who doesnt start with a ballista, and in some towns mage guild is part of the build structure to creatures anyway.

I'm not sure about your patience comment....you do know that on an xl map, an early money build actually extends game time....?

I am mixed about the vampires... If I am on native (Necro) terrain, I don't upgrade because the grey vampires will be camouflaged by the grey background... which really is the deciding factor in tough games.  On the other hand, if I am fighting against Inferno on Lava terrain, maybe upgrading the Vamps will do some good as the red Vamp Lords will blend in with the lava.

But u miss one point here.
Normal random games (online) last between 3-7 hours and are finished week 3 to week 5.
Hotseat games last at least the same time (i played zillions of hotseat games before starting playing online..), but reach month 3 or 4. So itīs true, the break between your turns lasts longer, but the whole game not..

I realized that Zombie is NOT the bomb!

You all forgot to build resource silo asap. Also it is very important that you do not upgrade archers. This way you can use them as fodders along with your pikemen, since they are slower. The same strategy works with elves and Centaurs.

when i play hotseat i play with my bro so we talk and chat and discuss other areas of life. it may take the same time but the turns go by quicker when your talking. this can happan on an internet game but what if u get some illiterate person who plays depending on what picture they can see. if i were to play someone who likes to talk thats ok but there is still the 3-7 hours that is going to go from my life.

so if i find a good person to talk with and time free than i would play a game but how often is that gonna happen

Okay now that capitol/creatures debate is somewhere else maybe we could continue on discussing about your first week in multiplayer games. Do you usually chain troops to all your heroes so that you can fight a LOT every day and take mines, dwellings, etc. or will you try to get as much exp as possible for your main ? Are there any strategies to get those precious secondary skills like Logistics or Earth magic? How tough monsters you can take on, say first 3 days with troops from city?

I buy usually 5-8 heroes on day one, depending on map size and richness. If random XL I usually have 8 heroes on day 3 at latest. I run on roads and try to explore the map as much as possible. In 99 % of the games I go for creatures on week 1. Sometimes I chain heroes to get all the dwellings/guarded mines. I have few problems though: I'm a bit coward when it comes to fighting on the first days. I've been practising my fighting tactics for a while now and I'm getting little better at it, but I still can't take all those day 1 fights that I see professionals doing. So after week 1 I'm lacking usually lacking troops from dwellings and some precious mines, and of course experience for my main (no big fights, not much exp). This also gives my opponent headstart on doing utopias, since I'm not very good at estimating losses/wins there and I usually delay my visit for too long (enemy already visited and got some rocking artifacts).

Just recently I made new formations to my armies. I used to use all troops I can get for my main. For example, on dungeon I used all troops from trogs to blacks on one hero. Now I use combinations like evil eyes/drags(or mantis)/kings/maybe medusas and explorer heroes use the smaller troops (trogs/hags/maybe medusas) for cleaning out leftovers. Is this tactic any good? Or should i just concentrate on pumping up my main hero with all troops possible?

Hmm it seems I have a lot of questions and only few answers. :-) Hope you can help me!

for ur battle problems this may help

u should know by now every monsters speed or close to it. i usually have a shooter from day1 so guard the shooter and take out the groups one by one. when a group is close and weak get him in melee. as for flying or fast creatures they are tougher but should come in smaller numbers. at weak 1 u should have a few kills at most when fighting flying or fast creatures and spells are a great help. seperate useless creatures into ones and when the enemy gets close send them out, they usually attack the one creature stack giving u another turn.

i hope this helps

Both these, of course depending on what map you play. Having main at about level 4/5 plus getting the resources to get your build done is a good aim. As long as you can accomplish this, plus have a plan for your week2 attack on the map to get full build, then you have done OK

Quote:

Some heroes will learn certain skills easier than others, though in the end it becomes luck of the draw. Both log and earth are desired/required skills and if I can get one of these week1 I'm happy. My favorite type of heroes are the Battle Mage (Dessa/Gundula are the best) They tend to learn very good skills. As for what you can take on at the start...it depends on your town type. Rampart does well in crypts due to grass terrain and the 50 centaurs you start with, as can castle with a quick upgrade to marksmen (again depending on the richness of the map). Remember though, crypys can really mess you up if you get a 10 vamp, tho there are battle strategies to combat this.

Quote:

Good plan though you rarely need that many heroes day 3 unless you are playing crappy templates like jebus or Ring. 8 heroes can send you flat broke and rob you of your precious build. 5/6 is an ideal number for average richness...unless you get a couple of golders, they really help out.

Quote:

Again depending on the template. Templates are becoming so well known now, you can almost attack them like a fixed map. For example, on a template like blockbuster, it can be no use sprinting down the road when you run into a horde of red dragons On a lot of the more played templates, your resource mines are in a second area with a second town, with a relatively light area guard. Sending main to accomplish this mid/late week 1 into early week2 is often a good tactics again depending on the template and the size of your start area.

This can work on an open style map with many towns, often you can buy troops from other towns to stick on heroes and take local lightly guarded resources or even harrass your enemy/kill his scouts if it is open. However I would 99% of the time keep all my main army near my main hero (in a lot of cases, your trogs would be dropped in favour of wyvern/angel from hives/conserves) It is not impossible for your enemy to surprise you if you havent been using view air/earth to track his movements. These 2 spells are greatly underestimated and can also save you a lot of time, acting like a partial cartographer. I'm sure these two spells are greatly underused by the majority of players. I know I have won several games I could have lost by killing troop carriers or a manin hero with only fast troop on board to increase the next days speed.

Hope some of this helps you out.
