Maps, eh?

I could make some maps... But first I need to know how to submit them, get them tested, their requirements, ect. I'm sure I might be able to whip up a few and have plenty of event bubbles!

A Mapping We will go! Tra La La!!

I agree with Shae_Trielle in that the maps should have some sort of purpose behind the battles and some form of storyline and/or history behind it.  I mean, with all of those maps out there without any distinct purpose to them or with bland storylines with the only goal is building up a character's army to fight the other army... I mean, that's all well and good, but any battle or war throughout history, and even in fantasy, has a purpose for being there.  I am one of these aforementioned mapmakers, though I tend to fall in the other extreme.  I end up concentrating TOO MUCH on storyline and not enough on the map itself.  Hm... Perhaps a solution to the problem suggested would be a team-work idea where one person designs the general idea of the map and works it out, then the other person generates a storyline, the main characters, and possibly even the major history and events... Just a thought.

Hi, CGChewie

Try these two:-

http://kristo605.tripod.com/heroes3/

http://www.h3trio.com/nonjavamenu/nonjavamainpage.htm

You can find some very cool maps in the latter too.

Personal recommendation: Lord of War, Angelic Pride, Titanic Pride (for people who like BIG wars.....)

Shaes post are the best!!

Sound's to me like Rychen has an eating disorder that is causing him not to host RP sessions.

We must all chip in (bad pun) and send him more ice cream and chips.

All those willing to help please send envelopes full of chips and ice cream to the following address.

Nah, Shae, I've just stopped going to the gym, it sucks!
I won't send ryche a sh*t because I'd rather eat that myself.
It much more fun to sit at the CPU 24/7 with the window shutters closed in a dark room (the freakin' sun blinds me and im allergic to it, maybe I'm a vampire or a troglodyte) and eat chips, ice cream and pracrically everything that is not poisonous.

BTW: Does anyone knows how do I do that smiley with the big smile? the one that is the pic of this reply?

hey shae

hey shae, make a map!  or if not making one yourself, lend your imagination to the mapmakers, explain what you'd like to see, what you feel is missing (don't say imagination is missing  -too vague)

check out maps by Tim, now where did he go? You'll hafta find him! But he made some maps i think you'd enjoy, they have a little more of a campaign element to them and lots of detail.  Salamandre also has maps that you'd enjoy i think, you can find some of his posted at ToH maps page look at large maps and also check out medium, u might enjoy The Chessmaster.

Im not really a mapmaker, i just make one once in a while, and i'm the first to admit im lazy  generally i start a map and then beg JB to finish it for me, lol  But if you can give me some ideas you'd like to see, i can give it a go for you.

Oh, God.

Sorry about this post before I edited it.  I sounded pretty wierd.

Anyways, I think people here aren't giving people in general enough credit.  We all have a lot more imagination than you think.

Pan

yes, you're right, I guess I should talk to mapmakers a little bit more, but I don't know any of them and Tim is often invisible to the whole world when he's on Zone so he's not the easiest guy to strike up a conversation with.

All I'd like to see is makers using the Timed Events feature a lot more strongly (weekly pop ups are good) and the Event Location feature is also a good thing to use (just a quick paragraph about why those level 6 creatures are guarding that gold mine, or why you have a Neutral town on a map (why does the town have no alliance?). You don't have to give a reason to every little object on the map, just a few here or there to make it a little more lively and well thought out. If you're going to playtest a map 100 times to make sure your woodmines are spaced properly then it seems odd that far less effort cannot be placed into map events as a final 'finishing' touch.
If I had the time to do a map myself I probably would, but I barely get 4 hours sleep a day and even less that time to play heroes.

hilarious

man this thread cracked me up!  it went from deep and thoughtful to lewd to conflicting...oh man...

it goes without saying that there is less imagination involved in homm than with AD&D or whatever rpg you play, but as one who quit playing RPGs strictly b/c of the massive amount of time it requires, i must say that technology is a good thing--for some of us at least.  the images on the screen are only representative anyway, and my imagination is ever in so high a gear that it does not hurt my enjoyment of the game much at all.  it is sometimes funny to me how a giant or titan can be shown only a few heads taller than the other creatures, and some other details like that bug me, but not too much.  and like shae (?) was saying, a little creativity in mapmaking requires that you not be lazy.  if i put as much into the map i am making as i really want to, i would never finish making the darn thing.  the toh stuff is all a mystery to me b/c my connection is too slow to play online and all that.  but considering the amount of time that the average homm game requires, even though it is much less than the average rpg, the more pertinent question about laziness is, are we spending too much time sitting at these stupid computers???

man i hope not--i love this game.

Sorry guys & gals.  The problem is not laziness on mapmakers but the fact that the efforts would not be appreciated by enough people.  Simple is more than enough for most homm3 players.  If you specialize you risk losing too many people.  Sad but true.  You can do it but as a mapmaker (or whatever) you have to realize this and not expect everyone to appreciate the time you put in...and realize that maps made in a half hour will be more popular.

I found this thread way back in the tavern...( last post actually). I thought i'd bring it back on top, since i found it very interesting...

Technology and Imagination...Do these two cancel each other out? I think not...In my opinion, technology only helps imagination by offering a wider plane where imagination can play. It can help one visualise what was in his mind, or perhaps enlage one's imagination. The sad thing in this eye-candy era, in my opinion, is that too many games today put too much accent on how a game looks and much less on how it feels. Which makes the general quality of games drop dramatically. But,...there are still games (older or newer) that are worth playing.

Playing computer RPGs instead of the pen-and-paper doesn't necesarilly make one lazy. I, for instance, don't play pen-and-paper for the simple reason that i don't have anyone to play with...none of my friends are especially into fantasy, and i can't do anything else....

Well, i am waiting to hear your opinions on the subject...

one schould always use it's Godgiven mind, because it ia a terrible thing to waste.
I mean using your own mind and gifts to think of a adventure is a lot more rewarding then using a snowing screen, it's just more fun!

But that's just my opinion
