I would wait for it to go down in price some more.  I myself wouldn't pay more than $20 (CAN) for it.

Warlords 4 really dissapointed me, but I haven't tried 3.

No, it's crap. I liked Warlords Battlecry though, but it's RTS.

Warlords 3: Reign of Heroes

Quote:
but is the camapigns good in warlords 3

I personally enjoyed Warlords 3 a lot, but the style of play is different from most games. I'll give a little summary. Remember that this is turn-based.

Types of common allegiances:
-Knights (infantry, knights, knight lords, etc)
-Giants (orogs, giants, etc)
-Orcs (goblins, ogres, trolls, etc)
-Dwarves (dwarven infantry, crossbowmen, mutant, etc)
-Horse Lords (pegasi, calvary, etc)
-Elves (elven archers, calvary, treants, etc)
-Undead (zombies, wraiths, undead beasts)
-Misc (Slayer Knights, Reavers, Dragons)

The above allegiances aren't always restricted to those creature types. Sometimes you'll find different units in other groups (i.e. Orc units in Giants). In some custom scenarios, you have the option of choosing the units that will be available to you before the game yourself.

You basicly hire heroes to lead troops, but unlike HoMM games, troops can move on their own (but considerably less without heroes). There's a method of grouping and ungrouping units by moving one group of units onto another and toggling a 'group' button on the action panel. Groups are limited to around eight, but also note that multiple heroes can be in that group of eight. You can use the same toggle button mentioned above to remove units (you'll highlight the chosen ones on a menu bar).

Just about everything takes place on the same screen, so your units can walk right 'onto' your forts or castles. To take over enemy castles, you need to march your units up to the edge of the castle and then click the mouse on top of the structure (cursor turns into a pair of crossed swords). Combat is heavily figured by the rolling of an invisible dice, but unit stats and special abilities are also factored in. The top unit on both sides(the weakest, according to default) fight first, and then whichever one survives gets to fight the next one on the other side, etc. When you play the game for a while, you'll tend to pick up on how everything works.

Troops are created in castles, so you'll have to select one creature type to produce in every castle. All units require a number of turns before they appear. For example, a single goblin unit takes one turn to create, so one goblin will show up in a castle every turn. More powerful creatures like Minotaurs or Giants may take three or so turns to create. So you don't hire them right away like you do in HoMM. Also, you have to pay upkeep so that the units won't abandon you.

Money is called GP (gold pieces) and isn't very complicated. Each castle generates a small amount of GP, so the more you take over, the more you rake in. When you set creature production in the castles, you need to pay a fee to get things running. There are other uses for money in the game, but I won't cover those.

There are many different heroes in the game; they level up differently depending on what they are. Some are Generals, so you can choose fighter-oriented bonuses when they level up. Thief heroes are unique in that one of their abilities happens to be Assassinate, which can be used for possible insta-kills in combat. Necromancer and Vampire Heroes are cool as well, since they can cast spells like "Reanimate" or "Wraith Call" when they gain higher levels. If you don't have the Darklords Rising expansion pack for this game, the undead heroes are the only ones who can magically summon units magically to your side using those two spells.

Ruins are dotted across the map and your heroes can visit them. When heroes explore the ruins, they have a chance of fighting a monster, getting gold, artifacts, sage advice, or even powerful allied units. Each ruin can only be visited once, so they're considered special in each game. It's best that you get to them before the enemy does!

The campaigns were good and challenging. If you like the regular game, you'll probably like these. Some things get hard after a while, especially when they turn the fog of war option on. But it's very fun.

There's so much more to the game, but I don't have time to explain it all. If you happen to get Warlords 3 someday, I really hope you enjoy it. There's a tutorial in the game and I highly recommend going through that first since things can be daunting on the first try. And, of course, get the expansion!

That's basically what 4 is like also.  One of the things I really hate about that game though is that it's really hard to get low level guys up in levels.  I mean if they would just allow you to switch units in the middle of a fight it would be better, but no you have to throw out units and they could be doing really well but the chances of them beating all the enemies is slim.  The only way I was able to do it in Warlords 4's demo was to Have hero with Heal or Armor and an angel with bless and heal, Or summoned Knight with Warding and then have 5 or 6 Archers with them.  Then a bit later found an artifact that gave me first strike.

Anyway if you want to try out the demo of Warlords 4 you can download it from Fileplanet (www.fileplanet.com).
It kind of sucks as there is only 1 type of magic and really only 1 race you can be.

***I just yesterday was at my local EB games and saw a used copy of Warlords4 for $12.  So I decided to buy it to give it another chance and it is better than I thought at first but still not that good.***

******Yikes this game can really P*$$ you off sometimes.  I mean the battle system is really starting to tick me off.  Here is a quick run down on how the battle atk def and hp work...ok the difference between attack scores determines weather or not you will hit your opponent with any given atk, for instance I had a reg foot soldier with 8atk  and was facing another foot soldier with only 3atk, now when units hit they do anywhere between 2-8 damage, but even if they miss they will do at least 1 damage.  If it's a special critical hit they can do upto 12 damage normally.  But this game can get really annoying and cheap you out so easily.  Now I had 2 pikemen type units with 8 atk and 12hp each, I attacked a town that had only 1 pikeman unit defending with 3atk and 9hp, now the arrow tower will always fire when a new unit comes into battle and does 1-3 damage,Level 1 city,  now no mater that I should have kicked his but and won that fight easily but somehow he manages to kill them both and still have 2hp left. I had higher atk, life, morale and I had two guys!!!  I tried this battle by reloading 5 times and in all those damn 5 times I only won that battle twice?!  I mean it just doesn't make any sense and really starts driving you insane.  Lol another thing is that I get so frustrated and determined to win that I lose a couple hours every time I play it.*****

I love III, it's not as complex as Heroes but just as fun to play.
