A Great Way To Make Battles Better

This can be achieved in two different ways :

1. Instead of having a hero walking around by itself, have it's units following. Other heros could join them, and move in different formations. When in battle, you could use real strategy, moving units around into tactical formatinos to increase your chances of winning.

2. Lose the creature stacks! It look unrealistic to have 1 Hobgoblin walk up to a Black Dragon, hit it with an axe, and have one of the Black Dragons die. If they got rid of creature stacks, they could have hundreds of Hobgoblins run up to a Black Dragon, lunge at it and viciously attack it with hatchets.

Idunno bout that one

Well, first off, i don't really understand what u were trying to say with ur first suggestion. Please clarify.

Second, I know having realtime battles and real numbers of troops on the field sounds great to some but i don't think that's what Heroes means to many other players. I enjoy taking the time to calculate my best moves and not just pointing and clicking with my first instinct. I'd play other games like lords or even warcraft if i wanted a game like this. Also having that many 'sprites' on one battlefield would require lots of calculations and games(especially multi games) would be very slow and the leap in hardware requirements would be very dramatic.

The only way i could see real numbers of troops is if creature growth was really small and even then by editing maps this problem would still come up.

Sorry to rain on your parade but if u come up with any reasonable solutions post em.

by shrinking the hex grid, and making some creatures smaller, not just makeing more larger units, you could help with the whole size thing
haveing a certant amount of space for each troop stack, for instance each troop stack gets 9 hexes, each gobling takes up 1/100th a hex, however a black dragon takes up 1 whole hex space, so in a group of goblins, if you have 1 - 100, you will see one goblin on the field representing the troops, for 101 - 200 you will see two, filling two hex spots, and so on untill you have 900, showing 9 stading (and all moveing as one unit) to attack, and for dragons, because the pic shows it takeing up two spaces for one dragon, it would go 1-3 dragons shows one dragon, 4-6 shows another dragon on the hex row above it, and 7-9 do you understand?
drawback--you would have a 9hexgrid of goblins attacking one point, what would they do? calculate one end of the goblins damage delt / recieved? or have them swarm the enemy making them stop down your troop of goblins before they can finaly move their ogre?
this is only a start on the idea, please by all means, refine it, the idea -and please don't divert- is to "show the actual size of the troop stack change with number, with out distracting from the tactical play of the game"

Good, I like some of the ideas here.
I, personaly, don't like the idea of a walking hero and his troops following him on the map. I would look like Lords of Magic or so. And there is another problem. Some of the spells like Visions and some other, would have no effect. Cuz you see the army size of the enemy hero.
But for the battles, I like kuraizen's idea. It could be solved in this way (like kuraizen mentioned), or changing the size of units, like, Dragons look much bigger that gremlins, Titans very tall creatures and so. I think we have discussed the size of the unts in the battlefield in another topic.
We could try to improve these ideas more. With the new homm4 engine, there would be a much larger battlefield, so we could try to come up with something.

Okay i think igot it

Instead of making each goblin a 'seperate' unit u make it so that each # of creatures in a stack has a different animation?
Like a 'few' will be 1 or 2 goblins but on the same hex grid.
A 'legion' will be a lined up formation of many goblins but still on one hex.

if this is the case then i think limiting creature stacks would be a good idea.
except make the hero be able to handle more than 7 stacks like say 10

battles

I really like the battles in the heroes game.

However, it would be nice to see different size units for smaller and bigger creatures(mentioned elswhere, a larger battlefield with just a touch less 2-dimensionalism, some better animation affects, some better obstacles and such to make the battlefield more realistic, and a better role and animation affect for the hero (he just stands there).

No, its been like that ever since the begining. I have heroes 1 to 4, its always been like that, plus they all wouldn't fit on the skreen.

Stacks are good...
look.. if ou didnt have stacks.. then... youd have about 2-3k units battling another 2-3k units.. any idea how annoying that would be? how laggy? and how hazardous the framerate would be?
