Charts in threads

Hi all. I am looking for some info here.
I have seen a few threads around HC where the person making the thread has inserted a simple chart with some text in it.
I would like to be able to do this for a thread i want to make. I only want a very simple chart with a few rows and columns that i can size as i want.
Ijust need to know what tools i need and if there is anything out there that is freely available.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Well yes, i cant create even a simple chart using wordpad because there is no option to create vertical lines. So i am assuming that some sort of simple tools programme is needed.
If its something more simple than this then i would like to know.

I always assumed those charts were the result of using something like Microsoft Word to design it, then copy/pasting into a image program, and finally putting the resulting image in the post. I didn't think there was a way to create a chart from scratch in your post.

have a look a few threads above to "upload center" check page 1.Khaelo posted a link there for a site that allows uploading files upon membership. It allows several formats and a chart shouldn't be a problem. Then just use the bb code to insert that in one of your posts.

The Internet Gremlins seem to have eaten your IM, as I didn't get it.

What kind of chart are you talking about?  Do you have a link to a post with a chart?  The Upload Center is just a place to put pictures, so you'd have to make your chart using something else -- Word, Excel, an HTML editor, etc. -- and take a screenshot.  The BB code lets you make a horizonal line but not a vertical one (to my knowledge). You could also stack | characters if you don't mind a bit of a mess.

What kind of chart. Well if you picture a rectangle the width of this page by say 4 inches vertical with 10 lines and 7 columns that is what i am looking for. There is a thread about Demon farming which contains this kind of table, but i cannot remember who made the thread or i would have sent them an IM directly to find out how they did it.

First, the gremlins are innocent -- I discovered your message in my Inbox.  It was an e-mail, not an IM.

Second, I was unable to find the demon-farming chart you mentioned.  The chart-creator is probably Xarfax, though.   This is a thread where he uses pictures and text to illustrate his points.  One of them is a table.  Is that what you had in mind?

Do you have an HTML editor of some sort?  Netscape and Mozilla come with a Composer which is quite easy to use, and it has a table tool.  What you could do is create a new webpage with a table, put that on the Upload Center, and just link it to a post here.

Edit:  Like this.  (I took the liberty of putting it in Happy Lobster's folder for demonstration purposes only.  )

Yes that chart you put in your Edit part of the post is exactly what i am looking for.
What did you use to make that? And thanks yes it was Xarfax that made the demon table but unfortunately the picture icon no longer works and it cant be viewed.

I used Mozilla Composer, which came with the browser (both are free at mozilla.org; regular Mozilla, not Firefox).  It has this handy little "Table" button on the top bar.  When you press it, it asks you how many rows and columns you want, and what percentage of the window you want the table's width.  Then it makes the table for you, and you can just fill in the blanks as if on a word processor.  The Netscape Composer is nearly identical.

There are HTML codes for tables as well.  They're more complicated, but if you learn them you can make a webpage-plus-table with something like Notepad.

Ok Khaelo that mozilla composer is great in producing the result i am looking for except that it is a tool for creating web pages and i dont want to open a web site just to make one post. Neither do i want my chart to be reffered to by a link, so what i am thinking is that i will need to save the file to a folder and then use the tools you have in the upload centre to display my chart as a picture.
Do you think this is the way to go ?

What I'd do, is to make a table either in Word, Excel or similar, and then taken a screenshot ("Print Screen" key ) and uploaded this screenshot. www.imageshack.us is a brilliant and free picture hosting service.

Well, you could make the table in that HTML editor Khaelo mentioned, and then take a screenshot, copy/paste it into MS Paint (if you use Windows), save it and upload the file...

Hmmm. I fear that I haven't been expresing myself clear enough, If so, my apologies for that. Let me try to go through this once more.

1. Make the table in the HTML editor.

2. Enter the "values" into the table (or chart, I just presume it's the same thing, as I'm not in the mood to take out my dictionary right now ).

3. Hit the "Print Screen" Key on your keyboard.

4. Open MS Paint (or similar).

3. In MS Paint, choose "Edit" on the toolbar. Then choose "Paste".

4. The screenshot you took should now be automatically pasted into MS Paint. Save it (preferably as a .JPG, as they take less space) and upload it.

Did this work?
