Traditionaly, nightmates are kind of like demonic horses that eat flesh. Or at least that's what they were in D&D, which first created them. They were often used as mounts for evil people, but they also often were quite powerful on their own. So it's not surprising to see them without a rider.

I might guess that the 22(23) is movement, or at least movement on the adventure map.

More dragons

Well it seems that some people in this community ( very few, fortunately ) enjoy nonsense discussions and like to insult others.
I've also noticed that most people really enjoy talking about heroes, so it's not worth replying to the first ones. No offense to anyone.

Ok, let's get back to the facts. Here's a screenshot:

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/screens/0,11105,470764-22,00.html

Anyone thinks this is a non-mechanical creature? I don't think it looks like the golems we are used to. Stone and iron golems looked like alive statues, but not this dragon.

Opinions?

Congratulations wyvern, you deserved that QP.

Still looks like a golem to me. It's not a traditional golem, that's not such a bad thing. Not everything has to be a stereotype.

Well, in the article the Nightmares aren't mentioned but other sources say that the Nightmares are in Asylum. By the way, there is another screenshot from that article that is interesting - it shows the stats of all Academy units! Although the numbers may change in the final version, here they are:
Dwarves
16 HP
3-4 Damage
3 Haste
14 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots (this is for shooters)
50 Magic Resistance (maybe percentage?) - specialty

Halflings
9 HP
1-2 Damage
6 Haste
14 Movement
0 Spell Points
10 Shots
Giantslayer

Gold Golems
75 HP
12-18 Damage
3 Haste
18 Movement
0 Spell Points
0 Shots
75 Magic Resistance. Mechanical

Genies
145 HP
24-30
6 Haste
30 Movement
15 Spell Points
0 Shots
Flying. Spellcaster

Titans
610 HP
100-150 Damage
6 Haste
22 Movement
0 Spell Points
16 Shots
No Melee Penalty. Chaos Ward
Sorry, but I'm not sure for the numbers because they are too small. Anyway, the difference between the levels is really bigger than in HoMM3!

I'd guess chaos ward is like what the nightmare has against life. Immunity to chaos spells, and resistance to chaos attacks.

http://www.florilegium.org/files/NORSE/Berserkergang-art.html

The etymology of the term *berserk* is disputed. It may mean "*bare*-sark," as in "bare of shirt" and refer to the berserker's habit of going unarmored into battle. Ynglingasaga records this tradition, saying of the warriors of Odhinn that "they went without coats of mail, and acted like mad dogs and wolves" (Snorri Sturluson. Heimskringla: History of the Kings of Norway. trans. Lee M. Holander. Austin: U of Texas P. 1964. p.10). Others have contended that the term should be read "*bear*-sark," and describes the animal-skin garb of ther berserker. Grettirs Saga calls King Harald's berserkers "Wolf-Skins," and in King Harald's Saga they are called *ulfhedinn* or "wolf-coats," a term which appears in Vatnsdoela Saga and Hrafnsmal (Hilda R. Ellis-Davidson,"Shape-Changing in the Old Norse Sagas, "in Animals in Folklore. eds. J.R. Porter and W.M.S. ussell. Totowa NJ: Rowman and Littlefield. 1978. pp. 132-133), as well as in Grettirs Saga (Denton Fox and Hermann Palsson, trans. Grettir's Saga." Toronto: U of Toronto P. 1961. p. 3).

That article seemed to be very comprehensive and it was fairly interesting.

"Pfah! You don't know what you're speaking of. As a Swede(A tip- what most people refer to as "Norse Mythology" should be called "Viking mythology" or perhaps "Icelandic Mythology". Those Norwegians doesn't have any monopoly on our common history."

This is quite true, although norse mythology is the commonly accepted phrase here. What can I say.....learn to deal with it.

" But now I get to far from my point), and fairly interested in history, I know that berserk roughly means "Beardress", and was used for a few mythologic charachters who turned into bears or other powerful creatures during battles. "

As the other poster said, this isn't true. You may be confused because berserkers were sometimes shown wearing bearskins into battle, which may have resulted in their name.

"What you call "berserk" is actually an "enhärjare" or "einhärjar", depending on what language you speak."

Hmm....well I speak English, and I'm fairly sure that in English those other words have no place and I'm in fact talking about berserk as I've said before. Try looking that word up in an english dictionary.

Thanks Wyvern! Good job.

If anyone ever deserved a quality point, Wyvern did!!!
Good job Moderator also!

If there are bridges associated with creatures it would be the Troll of course and I am happy to see them back.

This is more information than any other source i have seen and if it comes from Bulgaria.... give Bulgaria a quality point also!

Too much info for the small screen, I will have to print it out and try to assimilate it that way.

Thanx for the major scoop Wyvern!!!!

Dragon Golems

First off, good work wyvern. Thank you for your time and effort.

It is my understanding that a golem is a sculpture (of iron, wood, stone, etc) that is filled with blood or holy water or something of magical nature. So what confuses me is that people say that the dragon golem is mechanicalized. The only true way we'll find out is when the game is released and we watch one as it dies. If gears and mechanics fly out it is obviously mechanicalized. If not it probably filled with some kind of magical nature that brings life into it. Until we find out what is the use of argueing over such a petty topic. I'm more interested in the release date and other factors of the game.

Just my thoughts.....

Mojo

This doesn't really change things too much. Just because people who went berserk were sometimes said to transform into an animal to obtain their bestial rage doesn't mean that a berserker is defined as somebody who changes shape. The actual berserkers of history are still defined as people who attacked with great rage and lack of self preservation, not as shapechangers. The shapechanger thing was just a myth attached to them.

About those bridges... they are not bridges for trolls, they are just bridges for crossing water! (and I think this is more useful) And I didn't give the stats only for Titans. If you look on some of the previous pages, you'll see the Hit Points and Damage of 7-8 fourth level units. Yes, they are only two stats but this is because the author just mentioned them. And the creatures from the Academy town - I saw a screenshot with their stats. By the way, I don't know much about the Berserkers... except that they are from the Scandinavian legends. In Age of Wonders the Berserkers were a Dwarven unit. In HoMM4 they are probably from Stronghold but the author of the article said that they are from Preserve. I hope this is a mistake because I can't imagine Preserve with Berserkers?!

Bit too much...

Glad to hear so much news from you,Wyvern.Especially at this period when 3do is being so secrective and seemingly everyone there is busy working on the game to release anything to all the fans who are going crazy from the waiting.

Getting to the point,I feel that the black dragons are made a bit too powerful.1100 hit pts?!!Together with the immunity to all spells,it practically makes them invincible. All the rest of the level 4 creatures seem like runts before them.Hope they can balance the game by the differing the growth rate.

Berserkers from Preserve

Hey Wyvern,
"Preserve - The woodland creatures of this Nature magic-based town enjoy a recruitment bonus that lets them add new forces to their army after a successful battle." - Computer Gaming World
"There are a total of 66 creatures.  Some of the other 18 creatures(Neutral creatures) can be purchased through what is called a Creature Portal in the Preserve (the Nature town)... " - GamePen HoMM4 Preview
So, I think Berserker is a Neutral creature, it can be purchased through Creature Portal.
