I see some new "faces" in this thread for a change, it's nice.  Most I don't recognize anymore.

Consis, I didn’t watch the debate because I work almost every night.  But it is good to hear that McCain did so well.

I do not want Universal Healthcare for the reason that you stated, taxing the average person more to pay for it.  With all the obesity in the U.S. (though it actually leveled off this year I hear, it’s stopped rising) and the millions of smokers in this country, I want nothing to do with paying for these people’s diseases that are brought on by their own foolishness.  I have to sell tobacco at the grocery store that I work at and it shocks me that there is still so many young people that have taken up smoking.  Even with all the information out there on why its bad for you, they still light up, I just don’t understand.

The media is always biased in one way or another.  The New York Times is by far the worst source for your news.  Hell, I’d say Wikipedia is more reliable.  I personally get my news and election coverage from many different sources.  I have CNN.com as my home page for my internet news, Fox for my television news along with the local ABC affiliate, BBC radio podcasts twice a day and my local newspaper.  I think that’s fairly rounded.

Mvass, why shouldn’t the debate focus on McCain and Romney?  There isn’t any other candidate that has a chance in hell of winning any state, let alone the general election.  Ron Paul’s best state was Nevada where he got second place.  He only did so well because no one besides Romney campaigned there.  Giulliani and Thompson dropped out and Huckabee is slipping finally (which makes me so happy).

Quote:
To quote Romney, "You think health care is expensive now? Just wait until it's free."

That’s hilarious, and it’s a good point.

There is a very simple reason the media shouldn't focus on McCain and Romney: because the media creates the frontrunners. There wouldn't be any frontrunners (well, there would, but not to that extent) if the media didn't just focus on a few people. Every candidate should get to answer every question at a debate. Unfortunately, the only debate that actually did that was the terrible African-American debate. But if the media focused on all the candidates equally, all of the candidates would be doing more equally.

Well, I'd like to give my two cents (even though I live in Puerto Rico and I have my own voting woes come this next voting season ).

I consider that Ron Paul is an excellent candidate to be the next president of the United States.

He has the guts to speak out against the elitists that control most of the world's actions (because said problem isn't happening just in America), and, well, he's consistent. (And by consistent I mean that he doesn't change his mind on things every two seconds just to appease different groups of people.)

Seeing as how your choice of president indirectly (or rather, very directly) affects us as well, I'm eager to see if Ron Paul can come out on top.

*You have just read winterfate's two cents on the subject matter*
Thank you for reading!

If Obama has any intelligence at all, he will announce Edwards as his VP right now.  Since he dropped out, the two would be near unstoppable imo.

As McCain is increasingly appearing to win the Republican nomination, I think it might be better for the Democrats if Obama wins the nomination. Hillary can been seen as a McCains drinking buddy, and being "friends"  they have both stated that the other would make a good president. The best key to victory, imo, would be to picture Democrats far away from the Bush administration - which is enjoying great unpopularity. Obama does this better than Clinton - even though she naturally also is as far from Bush as can be.

If Hillary wins the nomination, she'd do well to try to get Obama as her running mate since he brings something to the campaign that she is generally perceived as lacking, namely charisma.  Another good option would be Mark Warner, a former governor of Virginia since he is charismatic and would help attract southern votes.  As would Edwards, for the same reasons.

On the other hand, if Obama wins the nomination, I think it would be a bad idea for him to try to get Hillary as his running mate since I think that would suffer from all the "I hate HIllary" sentiment but not actually gain anything.

As far as who his running mate should be, I'd imagine that he'll pick either Bill Richardson or Wesley Clark.

His major perceived weakness is lack of experience, in particular foreign policy experience.  Bill Richardson has tons of foreign policy experience and also would help to bridge the apparent gulf between Hispanic and Black voters.  Wesley Clark, as a general, provides instant tough guy cred to balance what some view as naivety on Obama's part regarding foreign policy.

Edwards, as another young, charismatic senator would provide little to Obama's campaign that Obama doesn't already have.  Perhaps it could provide the double whammy of likable guys or something like that, but I don't know if it would help that much.

If you take a look at the pool of Vice Presidential candidates for the democrats, they tend to get drafted from congress.  Do you really think that Hillary or Obama would turn away from 50 years of tradition and choose a former governor or general?  I don't know.  Then again, I picked Tom Vilsack, a former governor and someone firmly entrenched in the Hillary camp.

If Obama takes the nomination, and that's an if still, I'm guessing he'll choose Dick Durbin as his running mate.  The two of them are pretty good friends, have similar views, and would pose a formidable pair.  Candidates don't get into the business of choosing a veep until they've tied up the nomination.  If they do it any sooner, they are considered to be presumptuous and they will get punished for it.

Yes, Consis wants me to predict February 5th.  I can't.  Hell with it, I will.  Obama takes the delegates 65/35.  McCain, who by all rights should have been the nominee for the Republicans in 2000 so he could have lost graciously to Gore, I believe will smash Romney.

I'm predicting a gracious campaign between McCain and Obama in the mold of Eisenhower and Stevenson.  It will be something we the american people will not be used to, considering the nasty campaigns of Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Bush jr.  As of right now, I think Obama will win.  Racial assumptions about whites not voting for Obama  have proven to be untrue.  Case in point with South Carolina; Obama captured 25% of the white vote.  This is a former slave state and all polls suggested only 10% of whites would be willing to vote for him.

And McCain does not inspire the conservative base the way Dubya did.  I think many of them will stay home.

Here's another grandiose prediction.  I see the Republican Party further fracturing with the moderates fleeing to the Libertarians and leaving the GOP firmly in the grasp of those dreaded evangelicals.

I sincerely hope Obama wins the nomination, or else (and I hate to say this) I will vote for whoever is running against Clinton.  I honestly don't care who it is.  I know, sounds strange, because I DO want a female president.  Just not Clinton.  It may just be a gut reaction, and not logical, but eh never said I was logical.  You have to vote with your instincts.  My instincts tell me Clinton would be a terrible President.

Lol. I guess that explains a lot of the strange voting behavior the US has showed on previous elections

Well whoever can vote for whoever, but I am just a bit jaded with the Clintons.  We got rid of them once, don't want part II.  Not sure how my not voting for Clinton affects anybody else here, but eh each their own.  It's not anything personal against Clinton, she may be the best presidant we could ever have.  Just call it intuition, maybe right maybe wrong, but usually more right then wrong.

See another Florida fiasco type situation brewing sadly.  Obama will probably claim the most states, but Clinton will win because of 'electorial' type situation.  Which will be just as sad as Bush getting the win because of 'electorial' votes.

Hilary Clinton?

Wait a second..
Didn't she vote for the war?
Didn't she vote to allow Bush to invade Iran?
Hasn't she consistently voted with Bush?
Isn't her campaign funded by healthcare companies?
Didn't she vote twice for the patriot act?

Wait, never mind, it doesn't matter!

What actually looks fairly likely is that Obama will win a plurality of primary/caucus based delegates but Clinton will end up receiving the nomination because of the Superdelegates.  This situation is already developing -- Obama has won more delegates than Clinton, but Clinton is ahead in the delegate race because she has more superdelegates supporting her.

What will be really interesting is to see if people like Limbaugh and Coulter carry through on their threats to support Clinton if she is running against McCain.  Now THAT would be a weird situation.

I Am Confused

I have never before heard of this thing everyone is talking about, 'super delegate'. I don't understand it and I have never heard of it. I saw an extremely small news piece on it last night saying something about how a super delegate is simply a really powerful person. They said Tom Daschle is one and so is Bill Clinton. But they said nothing of how these people came to this elite status or how this elite status is afforded so much power in a democratic free nation. I have never seen anything in the constitution describing 'super delegates'. I am very confused and I don't feel good about this. I don't know what they are or why we have them or how they came to be.
