I believe he was referring to the Democrat's control of Congress.

I see.

On a different note, the Republicans would be all right if they let go of their social conservatism and imperialist principles, and the Democrats would be better if they forgot about the labor unions. Then both parties would be good.

Um, I haven't gotten around to saying this yet. But all this talk about Obama "pulling us together", "uniting people" etc.....

I conclude the exact opposite. That he will be the most divisive president in a very long time.

Extreme liberalism and a one party monoploy is NOT the way to unite the country. Look what we are just getting over with a one party monopoly for 6 years.

It's easy to think that two parties opposing each other is what causes division. I say it forces compromise and gives us a sense of checks and balances. Without that opposing force, one party can too easily run away with their idealism.

10-20 years ago i would never had said this. But I truly believe more and more that the two chambers of Congress and the Presidency should always be split between the parties. It not only forces compromise, but it also forces one party to double check their own beliefs and soulutions. One party monopoly makes it far too easy for a one party frenzy to take place. I believe we NEED that opposing force.

Binabik --

This isn't a matter of numbers.  It's a matter of mood -- climate -- modus operandi.  Of how those numbers behave toward one another.

The remarkable thing about Obama is that he can get people to cooperate with one another who wouldn't ordinarily do so.  Forget his stance on the issues.  They cooperate under his leadership despite his stance, not because of.  He also knows how to compromise rather than entrenching.  Remember, you're watching him operate as a senator.  He'll have a different hat on as President and will behave and lead accordingly.  You'll see.

These are two completely separate considerations: one is about issues, the other is about the ability to lead; to get through the differences and find enough common ground to forge solutions instead of spinning wheels and trying to knock down the folks on the other side of the isle all the time.

I agree that two parties can create a balancing effect to force compromise and keep people honest, and that this can be a good thing.  Unless they're not doing that but instead are doing something totally the opposite of that.

And they've been doing something totally the opposite of it for a long time.  Congress is much nore invested in preventing the other party getting anything done right now than it is in getting anything done.  So nothing's getting done.  One of the main reasons nothing's getting done because the president has essentially no leadership skills and is completely uninvested in fostering a productive climate in Congress.  Another reason is that practically nobody can stand the president.

Obama has precisely the leadership skills we need.  I know this because I've been watching practically every move he's made since before he was elected to the federal senate.

There's no way to prove all this to you or to argue with you when you say he doesn't have those skills.  We'll all just have to wait and see who's right.

But I'd bet a steak dinner for the whole community on it if I could.

Hmm, I haven't bothered reading through 34 pages of posts, so I'm just gonna throw in my input here. I've been looking for a decent place to discuss this sort of stuff, and the World of Warcraft forums are the exact opposite. Any type of serious post is immediately trolled to no end.

I just turned 18 today, and therefore am eligible to vote in my first election, which I plan on doing in November. I've been following the election somewhat closely, and at the moment I feel that Obama is the best choice for president, and, assuming he gets the nomination, he will have my vote. Going to go over all the candidates and my opinion on each.

Hillary Rodham Clinton - Clinton is one I do not want in office. I'd have no problem with a woman president, but not her. I don't disagree with most of her political positions, its just that she seems incredibly fake. I can't really think of a logical reason why, its just something I don't like about her.

Also, a point brought up by one of my teachers in a class debate made me think a little more. At the moment, our diplomatic relations with many of the middle eastern countries are strained terribly. Many of those countries look down on women, and even believe them inferior. At this point in time, having a woman leading our country would be a bad movement towards improving these relations.

Senator John McCain - I see McCain as another Bush, only slightly more educated. I can't say I really agree with most of his political positions - he favors the aggressive foriegn policy held by Bush's Administration, and I can forsee him leading us into another unneccessary war. He is also against all forms of abortion, which I cannot support due to the fact that it is sometimes a neccessity.

Representive Mike Huckabee - Huckabee is a complete joke to me ATM. I would honestly consider moving to another country should he ever be elected president. He is an over-religious, redneck, gun wielding maniac who the only reason he is being CONSIDERED for office is due to his internet popularity with the chuck norris endorsement. He, like Bush and McCain, supports the war in Iraq and would like to continue it. He is against abortion and same-sex marriage. I'm sure if there wasn't a culture taboo about it nowadays, he'd support segregation. He also intends to restrict immigration by building the fence, increasing border control, preventing amnesty, enforcing the law on employers, and many more options.

Also, he is for teaching creationism alongside evolution in public schools, despite there being a lack of scientific evidence for it. Hell, why doesn't he just come out of the closet and say it - He wants  to keep America a white, Christian, pure nation. I'm sure if it came down to Mike Huckabee and a brain-dead chimpanzee, I'd vote for the chimpanzee.

Barack Hussein Obama - Now, on to Obama. He seems the only geninuly real candidate amongst all of the major ones this year. If elected president, he would be remembered for being a more popular president, one thats well liked, such as Jimmy Carter in the 70's, and Clinton in the 90's. In other words, he has people skills.

I can't say I really disagree with most of his positions. Also, in reference to my Hillary Clinton statement earlier about the diplomatic relations in the middle east - having Obama as president would in fact have the opposite effect. Obama attended a mostly muslim school while growing up, therefore could be more understanding of other cultures, and easier to diplomatically deal with, as opposed to the southern christian raised presidents we've had the last few years. He is a confirmed Christian, but, knows to keep religion and politics seperated.

Anyways...just felt like throwing this out there, sorry if this was in the middle of a huge debate you guys may have been having

I hope his presidency is not remembered in the same way as Carter's presidency.

Carter has gained much more accolades and support from his work AFTER his presidency than before.

His presidency is often referred to as "malaise."

Nice, I'm glad to see Obama is currently in the lead.

However, I do fear for his safety if elected president. I'm afraid that there are still some backwards people in this country, perhaps even extremeists.

While it's nice when polls put Obama ahead of Mccain, remember, it's very, very early and there's a lot of time for that to change.  (Kerry was ahead of Bush in the polls at various points, too).  I've also seen some polls that have Mccain beating Obama head to head (the rassmussen report, for instance).

I think today saw the opening salvo in what will probably be a recurring theme in McCain's attack campaign against Obama.  Someone who isn't McCain makes the attack.  This gets the attack in the news.  McCain then disavows the attack.  This gets the attack repeated in the news while making it look like he's not the one doing the attacking.  Quite clever really.  Hopefully it won't work completely, but I have no doubt it will be at least somewhat effective.

Touche' Government !

The Clintons won't release her tax returns. I guess I was right to switch to Obama. I must be out of my mind to fall for his rock-star appeal. It is absolutely irrational. I suppose if Californians can mock the system by electing Arnold then we can mock the system by electing Obama. I thumb my nose at the government by voting for Obama.

But why? Because government types do things like the Clintons are doing with her super delegates and tax returns.

I haven't been paying attantion, but I'm curious how Obama is doing in Ohio compared to Hillary.

I ask because in Ohio she has been hitting pretty hard on the labor/union/outsourcing theme which is a big issue in a heavy unionized manufacturing state like Ohio.

LOL, she even called me. Her voice is annoying enough on TV, but it just plain makes me want to puke hearing it on the phone. I can't believe there is any world leader who could hear that voice on the phone without running straight to the toilet to empty their insides.
