Has anyone ever heard of this board game before, & if so, has anyone ever played it?

If you're not sure what I am talking about, check out this link:

Diplomacy

This picture is of the box's cover:

& this picture is of the map:

It's sort of like Risk, but without the dice. The cool thing about it, is that you can play games in person (a group of 7 is best), but you can also play over email!

I've played twice with a bunch of university buddies, who now live & work out of town, and we've always had lots of fun. It's sweet because there is 1 week between rounds, so everyone has lots of time to plan, makes alliances, break alliances, lie, & deceive...it's AWESOME!

Let me know if you've heard of it, played it, or if you would be interested in joining an email game sometime.

I would, if I knew the rules.  And if we were to play in August when I get back from camp.

Well, if you want to print out the Official Diplomacy rules and read them while you are at camp or on the toilet , just click on the link and wait while the 2.75 MB Adobe .PDF file opens up.

Then just print it out and have fun learning an interesting and exciting game!

EDIT: Doomfreak, we can just rename the countries to resemble those found in your neck of the woods! "I conquer New Zealand, Valeriy's homeland!"

I like your suggestion, DarkTitan!

I had not considered setting up a game on HC, but now that you mention it, it would be totally appropriate & fun too! Not to mention that it would give the "Other Games Exist Too" Forum a real kickstart of activity.

I can see it now: Any questions on the rules or general discussions could be Posted in this Thread, while our "orders" would be submitted into another Thread (that would also show the updated map), and all secret communications could take place over IM, Messenger, or email.

I'll look into starting one up, if there is enough interest. So, tell any other HC members that you think might be interested to play, to come Post a message in this Thread.

There is absolutely no need to own the board game! Use this link to download Realpolitik.

This is a program that not only lets you see the board and the units, but it also serves as a GameMaster by running everyone's orders at the same time. That way, there are no misunderstandings or conflicts!

Game description:

This whole thing takes place in the year 1901, when tensions between different “European powers” were very high. Ideally, there would be 7 players involved, as there are 7 countries in the game, represented by different colours:

England (navy blue)
France (baby blue)
Italy (green)
Austria (red)
Turkey (yellow)
Russia (white)
Germany (black)

The process starts with each player randomly picking a country "out of a hat", then everyone determines where they are on the board...either by geographical area or by their colour.

Then, once everyone knows where they are & what units they own (either Armies or Fleets), the “diplomatic phase” begins. This means that players will have a predetermined amount of time to talk with each other, in the hopes of gaining more Supply Centers. These “SCs” are identified by the black dots located in certain territories. They essentially determine how many units your country can maintain and helps to determine the winner of the game (1st to 18 SCs wins ).

Since there are many un-owned territories (with SCs in them) at the beginning of the game, you will often see players go for the nearest ones right away. However, You might sometimes see 2-3 players gang up on someone right away, and steal his/her SCs…but this rarely happens early in the game. Eventually, as the un-owned SCs are all captured by different countries, they will build more units to reflect the strength of their domain. In turn, this will make the board more crowded, so you will start seeing people form alliances or betray one another, in order to steal other players SCs.

The turns basically take place twice a year…the Spring & the Fall…and everyone moves at the same time! After the “diplomatic phase” is over, the players must all submit orders for their units (either Hold, Move, Support, or Convoy [Fleets only]). Then, the orders are read at the same time and everyone find out what the players are doing “on the spot”.

For example: If you had made a deal with another player to leave your borders neutral, but when the orders are read he is moving 2 of his units towards your SCs, then you have been bamboozled!

Here’s a screen shot of what typical orders for the Spring of 1901 would look like:

When the orders are written down, this is what they typically look like, as well:

Some players’ units will be able to freely move to their territory of destination, but others (who have submitted conflicting orders) will either bump each other (and go nowhere) or overtake the other. For example: 1 vs 1 = no change; 2 vs 1 = 1 is overtaken; or 4 vs 2 = 1 of the 2 is overtaken.

This process (the diplomatic phase followed by writing & reading orders) is repeated for the Fall the same way. The only difference is that when the Fall turn is finished, players count how many SCs they own and that will determine the strength of their domain. If they have gained some SCs, then they can build more units…but, if they have lost some SCs, then they must disband the excessive units.

This goes on until the first player reaches 18 SCs, and then he/she is declared the winner!
