I beg to differ....

December 19th decides the fate of fantasy -PERIOD

Tolkien (or "grampa" as some call him) changed Fantasy forever with his books (even if some don't see it that way)
when the movies come out it will be the dawn of a new era (how is that for dramatic ?)

Actually didn't he practically invent Fantasy, at least as we know it today!!

Shhh! Guys...

Don't speak so loudly...Incubus might hear about this thread and it would end up being "I hate Tolkien" thread...

But Oldtimer how do you feel to be husband of Tolkien fanatic. Sorry to ask but NEVER heard anyone really studying those elven languages...and sorry to say but are you sure is he really...healthy...you know?...

And Oldtimer was right about that future of fantasy films. If it is hit fantasyfilms/tv-series will be made more in the near future. If it is miss I think we're gonna see even less fantasyfilms than earlier...none in fact.

Is the film going to be good? Well, if Liv Tyler is one of the "main characters" I say it gonna...suck big time.
I can't understand why to change the book. And how Tolkien's family has given their permission to change it!
That kinda think makes me sick...
Tolkien would turn in his grave if he would heard about that Helm's deep fight...what they end up doing next?
Frodo and Gandalf dies and Liv Tyler characters battles against the Balrog?
It might happen...

About twenty years ago Tolkien was very popular and alot of girls really got into it.  But being a fan is what life is all about, we have over a thousand fantasy and sci-fi books in our library(OK boxes in the garage) and if we read a good book we usually keep it around to be read again in a few years.  I am a big believer in buying books by authors I like as a thank you for the good stories.

Yes...

That is very thoughtful...
To buy the book which you really like and kinda give some thanks to writer.
However I don't have really the money to make investments into books. I would be buying so many books because I like so many. There are lot of fantasy out there but I think there aren't really many good or fantasy I like. Tolkiens work is of course classic but I like "darker" fantasy more. So usually I end up reading something else than fantasy.

I have thought really buying books but many of them I would have to order because bookstores in here have only some recent books. Too bad. At least you get some from library but then again you have to order them to library and that can take time.
I have thought buying those books we earlier discussed in Christmas...Those Martin books...Game of Thrones was the name?...Should look that from Amazon.com again...

Commercial reasons

to strenghten the Arwen character? The usual suspects... catch a wider audience, attract Liv Tyler fans, give the story a higher romance element... I know some girls who have tried to read the LOTR trilogy, maybe following my enthusiastic advice. They failed, and one of the main reasons they gave me was the lack of a romantic story (in fact, Aragorn and Arwen story is only told at the end, in a few pages, and Eowyn story is the story of a rejection).

My response was simple. There's a lot of books and films with strong (and often ridiculous) romance plots, and there's a few of them that don't need that love component. If you don't enjoy the glorious and desperate battles, the long epic stories, the unstoppable strenght of courage and friendship, the fascinating corruption of power, and the eternal struggle between Good and Evil... why are you reading (or seeing) "The Lord of the Rings"??? Is there some pink heart painted on the cover of your LOTR book? No, I think your book's cover probably promises what it gives.

My conclusion: LOTR films will be a sales hit... Some "Expert Marketing" heroes will make that true, but we the Tolkien fans would probably preferred a more humble film more respectful to the book.

But...

There are thousands of LOTR fans...
And as you said WE Tolkien fans would have liked to see more humble film...
Are filmcompany thinking that Liv Tyler and her character will just attract more people but the fans will still go watch it?

I can say that I didn't go watch films like Titanic and Pearl Harbour because they were marketed and put into candypaper to give "people what they want". Yeah, sure they were phenomenally bad movies that big audiences just loved. Has movieindustry just lost their balls or what is going on?

I'm very critical about everything especially what comes to books and movies and then if my favorite thing is changed to some half-breed-copy I don't know should I laugh, cry or just puke. Maybe I do all those.

I won't give my two cents people who rape and destroy something I happen to really like. Movies about Tolkiens books should be made as original work were but of course you have to choose into which "scenes" movie concentrates and also maybe adding something to story isn't bad but that kind of direct savage work changing some female character into some kind of warrior makes me want to get that sniping rifle ready and see somebody fall.

Well, at least I can save the money from movie to buy some games. I wish that all those "Tolkien fans" won't be using their money too to that film but decide not to support film that destroys the essence of Tolkies work. However I don't know so much of the film yet but what I have heard it won't be my cup of tea.
BTW of course we could support it so it could be hit and movieindustry would put some more fantasyfilms out. But if they are gonna all be some candybar work I think I pass...

Spoiler!!!

some changes were made (as Sha_men said) to add more action in parts the story was more slow, Aragorn's/Arwen's romance plays a bigger part (as does Arwen herself), Lengolas is still there (he was replaced just in the "chase" scene by Arwen) as are all the Fellowship members... they also changes the ending of the films (the first film ends with Boromir's funeral) to make them more "cinematic"

let's face it people, if the movies were an exact copy of the books, only hardcore fans would go and watch them. I just hope these changes won't ruin the feeling of the books...

Oldtimer, you are a lucky man... I hope I could find a mate that likes Tolkien (most girls/women in Greece don't like Fantasy)... Mae govannen dunnadan (ask your wife what that means)

BTW, during my last visit to ThinkGeek I saw a sticker that had something written on it, that something was: "Do not meddle in the affairs of hackers for they are subtle and quick to anger" that sure does ring some bells to Tolkien fans everywhere..

Star Wars is more fantasy that Sci-Fi, the story is of wizards and warlocks, knights and pirates and princesses.  The problem with most fantasy is it looks so horrible and cheesy on film that the exciting story is lost(if ever present).

The studio is pumping $600 million into this Lord of the Ring,  if it doesn't work the only people who will gamble on fantasy stories will be disney.

By they way Tolkien wasn't much of a writer.  I'm sure the hollywood guys are much better and can really improve his work.  I've seen alot of movies and the writing is so good, how could they go wrong by improving the work of some dead guy?

Have you told that to your wife Oldtimer? If you did I am surprised you still breathe
J. R. R. Tolkien is one of the best (if not the best) writers throughout the history of literature

even if you are older than me (can't possibly be married at your 22) you haven't read more books or watched more films (holywood and european) than I have (I had too much free time)... let me tell you something about those "hollywood guys" THEY DON'T KNOW snow! most films are for braindead americans filled with stupid action scenes, clishes, eye-candy but no (descent) script!!!

Hey, Oldtimer!!

Have you tried this with your wife: read aloud selected passages from National Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings"?

One of my college roommates was a Tolkien fanatic. He regularly took notes in Elvish script. I'd read from that book to him in our dorm room. He almost died laughing, after he got over being huffy. Made the next quarter a lot easier.

What exactly is the problem again?  I saw the preview for the movie and it looked very good.  Fans of the novels will go to see it no matter what.  Why would hollywood try to get those people to see the movie when they will already be there?  That doesn't make any sense.  They have to try to bring in the casual viewers...the mainstream audience.  And there is nothing wrong with that if they make a quality movie and attempt to stick with the story as best they can.  And it appears they have.

I have read several books and many magazine articles on screenwriting and writing books.  These are two distinctly different art forms.  One isn't inherintely better than the other either.  When a book is made into a movie things must be changed.  Dialogue must be more "visible" and scenes more to the point.  I admire novels and I certainly admire movies that I can immerse myself into.  Both can be good and bad.
