Crag Hack #4:

I just completed this the other night, but I had the darn-hardest time getting there. In fact, I honestly thought I'd never beat it. This is the one where Crag Hack needs to swipe the Yawning Shield of the Dead from a Necropolis clan. The thing is, the Shield can only be taken after beating a mega toughie named Charnath. Plus, you can't directly wipe out the AI because you can't capture any of their towns. Goodness, I hate these Heroes stealth missions.

For those of you who remember playing and/or beating this tough campaign mission, I'd like to know what you think about the experience.

Short Term Memory, Don't Fail Me Now!

Hello, GG!

I am not sure if you are playing all the SoD campaigns or just Hack and Slash.  However, if you are playing all of them (in somewhat of a progression), then I am just a little ahead of your in terms of completion.  I am currently on the last few scenarios of Unholy Alliance (the 'blacked out' or 'locked' campaign in the campaign selection screen).  It has been a lot of fun, coupled with some frustation, thus far.  I am playing them all on Hard difficulty setting.  I would have liked to have tried them all on Impossible. Unfortunately, at the present time, I do not have the time, patience, or resources (pun intended) to undertake that feat, especially with all the saving and reloading.

Anyway, enough about my exploits...

I am not at my computer with Heroes3 installed, so I am trying to remember this particular scenario.  My short-term memory usually fails me, but if I recall correctly...

Warning: Possible Spoiler Below for those of you who have not yet reached this scenario

Is this the scenario where you have to travel through the swamp terrain in order to access the underground cave entrance where the Death Knight awaits you?  If so, and if my memory serves me correctly, the Death Knight has quite a large army.  I believe that by the time I reached him, there was no way I could kill him with the army I brought (even after saving and reloading a few times).  I believe that I had to wait at least another week or so in order to bulk up my army and ferry the troops to my main hero.

So no, GG, you are not doing anything wrong.  You can just look at it this way...You are such a great Heroes3 player, that you were actually able to locate, close with, (and eventually destroy) the enemy much more quickly than the mapmakers anticipated.  That explains why the final battle is so tough, because you arrived too darn early!  Well, at least that is what I tell myself...it makes me feel much, much better!

Thanks for the post.

I think that scenario you mentioned is Crag Hack #2; that was was tricky as well. Interestingly, many of the SOD missions revolve around stealthily meeting the objective and avoiding the enemy (and their impossible armies). I think this is a unique way to build up the campaign missions, although I do miss beating the AI into the ground like you could in most RoE or H2 campaigns.

Hmm... I've never had problems in any Crag Hack campaigns. For one - he can get a spellbook and that makes things easy. Try playing Birth of The Barbarian campaign on 200%. I had to restart the entire campaign after reaching 4-th or 5-th map. The guy you get CAN NOT CAST SPELLS. AND, on his 4-th and 5-th map he has to fight 10-15 spellpower guys who have meteor shower and who have  fully stacked fortress armies from 5 fortresses on week 1!!!. And all you start with is a stronghold with goblins and wolf riders in it and 0 gold. I could only finish this level successfully after I restarted and got first aid and ballistics instead of the other 2 skills. (yes, you got it - first aid and ballistics, to get the full understanding of why the f*ck would anyone want those - play BoB scenario on 200% yourself).

I never had any problems with that campaign.Ofcourse artillery is a must as it is in most campaigns.

Actually, I don't need to play that campaign on 200%. They'll be a pain in any situation since the AIs have their town and magic advantage over Yog. I've gone through half of that campaign and that's been the case. With regards to my skills, I find playing on 200% much too frustrating to be any fun at all. This isn't to wuss out or anything, but I can only play only so many hours nowadays since I'm in college...

Still, the satisfaction of beating said campaign missions is only too sweet. Upon beating Crag Hack's campaign, I had to keep quiet or else I'd wake up the whole neighborhood.

I totally sympathize with you, GG, in regards to difficulty level.  I would love to go Impossible (200%); however, I just do not have the time to undertake such a venture (even as it is quite appealing to me).  I do enough saving and reloading on Hard (120%) as it is already!

Just had to share this with you...If you enjoyed the Hack and Slash campaign, then I think you will be in for a real treat with the 'locked' campaign, Unholy Alliance. I believe it is the longest SoD campaign, and IMHO, has the best storyline as it incorporates and builds upon the previously completed ones.  Sometimes, I find myself torn about how I envision the outcome.  I don't want to say too much or give too many specifics in order to preserve the fun (and suspense) for you, but I will make this general statement...You really learn just how much a few combination artifacts can sway the balance of power on a map, especially the larger ones in this particular case.  

I hope you push-on and try to complete the rest of the SoD campaigns (in between your multiplayer games now with H3 Complete), for IMHO, they are well worth the time and effort.

I sure will. If I can't beat all the wily foxes on the zone, perhaps I'll have a better chance burning through these campaigns at least.

When I played Hack and Slash,I was a noob.In the last scenario,I was getting the hang of it.I think it was tricky but no big deal,annoying,because the necros were always showing up via monolith and I couldn't capture their towns.As soon as u free Slash from the prison,defending the Knight towns from the necros is easier.

Crag Hack was the first SoD Campaign I ever finished without cheating (!!!!) I had played some RoE before that but backthen I was a big cheater and only finished a third of the maps normally. The final map of Hack and Slash was quite easy as I remeber it, don't know how, because bac then I was the greatest n00b to ever call myself a Barbarion...Played on easist difficulty though... It's a great map...that's what I wanted to say, just got  alittle carried away.

Yeah, it's a great campaign, dontyaagree? =D
But how comes everybody says Hack and Slash is the hardest of the campaigns along with New Beginning? Does it get a lot more harder than the other campaigns when you raise the diff of what?

I find Hack and Slash to be most difficult of the four beginning campaigns.  I'm trying again, after a years long break.  just like before, I can't get past the last scenario in Hack and Slash.  It is the only thing standing in my way of unlocking the first locked campaign.

Mister Hack ("Hack, Crag Hack") has lots to do before he can go on a mad dash.  Take the neutral Castle, free Slash, liberate the Hill Fort, liberate the Magi Hut and the artifacts guarded by the ghost dragons are all necessary.  

I may be waiting too long to send out Crag Hack, or sending too much of my armies with him.  

Is there a way to keep the massive undead armies from taking both castle towns?  I just don't imagine Slash having much success against the massive armies led by necro heroes with big stats and lots of spell points.
