Wanderlust? Nightwish has made a good song by that name!

Wow, a recent song?

Personally, I was hoping that R.E.M. wouldn't choose Wanderlust to be their final single from the Around The Sun album. There's this other song called The Outsiders that's vastly better and much more fitted for a single. I guess R.E.M. didn't have good radio airplay in mind when they made their choice.

Considering my location and budget, I have strongly limited access to Queen singles. As in, I haven't got any yet, and unfortunately don't see myself getting any in the next few years. But then, there's still three albums to get, and they've promised to release some 70s live performance footage on DVD, so I'm happy.

My opinion of said bands, expressed in a characteristically concise manner:

R.E.M - pathethic
Radiohead - pretty damn good
Queen - classic*

Sorry 'bout the lateness; I just noticed this thread...

Please note: I do not consider myself a fanatic, as I am very sceptical to fanatics in general, but I do, however, fancy myself to be quite a Radiohead fan.

Guitarguy buys his 1st Radiohead album, OK Computer.

-guitarguy

You have made a wise choice, by purchasing the greatest album ever made. Congratulations, my good man!

Quote:
Another attribute about being music addicts and fanatics is collecting singles, even if you already have the albums. I'm trying to get my hands on as many R.E.M. singles as I can.

I tried starting this with Radiohead once, but after buying two different editions of “2+2=5” and one of “High & Dry”, I stopped. But at least I got the b-sides. Now I try to get my hands on as many of their mini albums as possible. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by both “Itch” (Japanese edition), “My Iron Lung”, and “I Might Be Wrong – Live Recordings”, although the “Com Lag (2plus2is5)” was a slight disappointment...

Quote:
I don't see what these three bands have in common...? How can one person be a fan of Radiohead and Queen at the same time?!

What!?
I am a fan of both these bands, and I can’t see why not. After all, when Thom Yourke started to learn the guitar, it was, in his own words, “because he wanted to be Brian May.” They are both extraordinary bands, although I tend to be biased towards Radiohead.

So, to the real point of this thread. I will try to follow up some of GG’s lists.

First, here’s my rankings of the Radiohead albums, on a scale from 1 to 6, with the latter being the best grade.

Pablo Honey (1993) ****+ - It’s a good album, no doubt about it, but many of the songs are too similar to be extraordinary.

The Bends (1995) **** - After Pablo Honey flopped, Radiohead decided that they would never again release an album with only one song with a hit potential (on Pablo Honey, that song was “Creep”). So they tried to make an album consisting of potential hits only. And they did a pretty good job too. Most of the songs on this album are great, but when they are piled together like this, I find that they can be monotonous, and often as not boring, exceptions being “Just”, “Street Spirit”, and a few others.

Ok Computer (1997) ****** - To me, this is The Ultimate Album. I have never heard an album that can even compare to this one, when it comes to composition, great songs, consistency, and a whole lot of other things. (For a long time, I thought that Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon could measure up to Ok Computer, but no more. I still consider it to be an awesome album, though.) The entire album has a feel of alienation to it, and the lyrics have become more cryptic, but also better, since the first two albums. (Note that the development of Thom Yourke’s lyrics seems to be going the direct opposite direction of his great idol Michel Stipe’s. Yourke gets more and more cryptic as time goes by, whereas with Stipe, it’s the other way around.) This album is also strengthened by the presence of what to me is the best song ever: “Paranoid Android”. The title of this 6:28 long song comes from Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker...” book(s), and every time I listen to it, I discover something new. Simply an amazing song. The album is further strengthened by the presence of “Karma Police”, “Exit Music (For A Film)”, “Lucky”, “No Surprises”, “Airbag”, and many more.

Kid A (1999) ***** - While Radiohead started out like a guitar-based indie rock band, they soon started experimenting with their music; already on Ok Computer, this is clearly audible. On Kid A, however, the electronica has taken the upper hand. Poor Ed O’Brien hardly even touched a guitar between 1998 and 2001. If Ok Computer was dominated by a feel of alienation, so is Kid A. The name of the album refers to a story Yourke made up, I think, about this kid in a future society, who is a genetically modified clone. The perfect human, if you will. However, this perfect human finds the world to be cold and cruel, and gets depressed. It is in many ways the post-Ok Computer trauma of Radiohead, in the form of an analogy. Amongst the songs, we find “How To Disappear Completely” (a song that came into Thom’s head while they were doing a gig on the Ok Computer tour – btw excellently described in the nightmare of a documentary called Meeting People Is Easy. I believe the gig was in Dublin, and suddenly, Thom has this vision of him floating down the town’s river, possibly called the Lefie or something along those lines. The refrain in this song goes like this: “I’m not here /this isn’t happening /I’m not here”), “Kid A”, “Optimistic” (“The best you can / is good enough” – this is what Thom’s girlfriend said to him when he felt that he didn’t meet the demands of the fans during his Ok Computer tour depression), and more.
As a curious titbit, it can be said that the phrase “to do a Kid A” has gone into the English language as a description of the actions of someone who follows up a commercial success with something completely different.

Amnesiac (2001) *****- - Having alienated many of their fans through Kid A, many thought that Radiohead would follow up with a more The Bends-like album. Not so. Of course, Amnesiac isn’t as different from Ok Computer as Kid A, but it’s still kinda heavy on the electronica. Sure, many of the songs would have slid right into Ok Computer. But then there are the exceptions. Take, for example, “Sliding Plates”. Thom had written lyrics, and worked out a melody together with Jonny Greenwood. Suddenly, a thought strikes him. So, he sits up all night, memorizing the lyrics – as they would have been sung backwards. He then goes into the studio, and records these lyrics, sung backwards. Then he adds the music to the song, but in order to do this, he has to play the lyrics backwards, again. And when you turn something that’s already backwards, backwards, what way is it then? That’s right. It’s forwards. Then, he adds various noises (such as the sound of a plastic pipe being whirled rapidly around in the air), and says that he’s satisfied. I suppose that most of you’d prefer the live version of this track, where he plays the piano and sings in a more normal manner. A great album.

Hail To The Thief (2003) ***** - This is the album where Radiohead returns more to their Ok Computer style. Still heavy electronica influences, but not so much as on Kid A or Amnesiac. The opening song, “2+2=5” (which by the way is a reference to Orwell’s “1984”), sounds like a mix of “Creep”, “Electioneering”, and “Just”. The name of the album is, as some of you might already have noticed, yet another reference. This time, it is to what the protestors who demonstrated during Dubya’s first inauguration shouted at him – “Hail To The Thief”; a pun on the usual “Hail To The Chief”-thingy. All in all a very good album. Their 4th best, in my opinion.

My favourite songs on the different albums:
Pablo Hoeny: Creep
The Bends: Just
Ok Computer: Paranoid Android
Kid A: How To Disappear Completely
Amnesiac: Spinning Plates or Life In A Glass House
Hail to the Thief: 2+2=5 or Where I End And You Begin.

Phew. Long post. 1,5 hours, this thing took me...

EDIT 24.08.05: Forgot to write what song is my favourite om Hail to the Thief.
Woock as btw informed me that "there is no way that OK Computer is the best album in existence" and that "Sheer Heart Attack" is.

Terje, you'll be pleased to know that I've been listening to OK Computer and I think the album is...okay so far. My favorite song is without a doubt "Let Down", followed by "No Surprises", "Karma Police", and "Electioneering" in that order. "Paranoid Android" has a pretty unique/weird musical arrangement.

Seems like a fair idea Guitarguy. First time I've actually read this thread, bit late I know.

Well I wouldn't exactly call myself an 'addict' or a 'fanatic'... alright fine I am

Franz Ferdinand

Album Ratings:
***** = favourite song.
****  = good song, keep it in your good playlists.
***   = average, worth listening more than a few times.
**    = nothing special, listen to it, then probably forget.
*     = shocking. delete.

Franz Ferdinand
01. Jacqueline ** I don't really like this one, takes a minute to get into the decent music.
02. Tell Her Tonight * Repetitive and boring..
03. Take Me Out ***** One of my favourites. Excellent guitar and rhythm.
04. The Dark Of The Matinee *** Not painful, but just ok. Likely to get stuck in your head.
05. Auf Achse **** Slower, but still an excellent song.
06. Cheating On You **** Another one that'll get stuck in your head.
07. This Fire ***** My favourite Franz song. Now that's music.
08. Darts Of Pleasure ***** Awesome rhythm and especially like the lyrics.
09. Michael ** Nothing spesh.
10. Come On Home **** Good song.
11. 40 Ft ***** Original, and unique. Highlights what the bass can do when it's not drowned by guitar.

You Could Have It So Much Better

01. The Fallen ***** Love the lyrics, and the whole deeper meaning part.
02. Do You Want To *** Overrated. When people talk about this album they talk about this song, not such a big fan.
03. This Boy *** Nothing spesh.
04. Walk Away ***** Slower, with awesome lyrics.
05. Evil And A Heathen * Some of the songs on this album just take up time.
06. You're The Reason I'm Leaving *** Not bad. Pretty fun.
07. Eleanor, Put Your Boots Back On * Kill me now. Trying to be the Beatles.
08. Well, That Was Easy ***** Love the words and the guitar.
09. What You Meant ***** Same. One of my favourites, good lyrics.
10. I'm Your Villain ***** Reminds me of 007.
11. You Could Have It So Much Better **** Almost a favourite, very good.
12. Fade Together * Up there with Eleanor.
13. Outsiders **** Good song, good guitar and drums.

Haha I just noticed how theres a large number of *'s and *****'s... doesn't make sense but true.
