the ultimate noob thread

hey guys, been a while since i've posted, but i still come here to read and learn, but, i want to start playing on the Zone, but i know my skills on HOMM3 are...crap, so i was wondering if you guys could give me some general advice to help me at least survive the first 10 turns

i really enjoy using the Tower town and ranged units, but i also have a special place in my heart for teh conflux(elemental) town.

Any help would be apreciated.

that what rychenroller had to say from a previous thread. i dunno but angelito says he is a one of the great h3 players

my personal tips are this:

go for upg. gremlin tower day 1 NO MATTER WHAT

get a second hero and always chose gold in chests except for when ur main hero can choose 1500 exp. try to get capitol early as to keep up with costs of tower. also try to get nagas very early as they are like tanks and very good with haste. go for crypts early but read up on threads here on how to do it effectivly.

Guitarguy, are u serious or just tossing?

Normally u should recruit about 5 heroes not 2.

Day 1 u upgrade the gremlins which will give u an excellent week 1 army.

Dont build town hall till week 2.

I prefer building genies and nagas week 1 which means no citadel in most cases.

In most cases choose gold from chests, if u choose exp do it from boxes with 1500 xp, not 1000 xp. (im sure guitarguy was just joking in this case)

Choose a might hero (Orrin is the best u can get)as main and go for skills like logistics, earth, air, archery, offense, tactics, armorer, water, pathfinding.

Make sure u build giants and castle week 2 and focus on getting a lot of money and gems to upgrade to titans later in the game.

Try to avoid meating ur opponent until u have titans, when u get them go for him.

Flux is rarely played on the zone because they are to strong compared to the other towns.

Hope u can use some of this info.

U got me there.

Orrin sucks in generel, the exception is if u get him with tower because of their strong shooters and because his leadership skill works better with tower than with castle. Besides im probably wrong that he is the best u can get. Crag might be stronger with tower as well.

nice post about tower Maretti, would  be fun to see that castle more on the zone though.Nowdays i think only people that come for the first time on the zone after a long experience against the AI still think Tower&Solmyr rules.

Not with my game version, I wouldn't. Only the first two heroes inside the Tavern per week have small armies. Anything after that is just a single Gremlin, Centaur, Imp, etc. If that's what you're getting at.

By excellent army, I suppose you mean the Gremlins of your starting hero and first hired hero, yeah? I tested recruiting five heroes just now and only the first new hero had numbers. As expected, of course.



You ever heard about the "chaining" thing? To make 1 or 2 fights with 1 hero, then give the army to the next hero, which transports these troops to a third hero, who makes again one or two fights, chains them again......and so on...
And yes, itīs normal, only the 2 first visible heroes in the tavern have troops. So u have a starting hero with about 25-35 gremlins, a second one out of tavern with the same amount and 16 gremlins from the dwelling. So when u upgrade to mastergremlins, u normally will have 65-85 mastergremlins. And that is a strong army. With castle, u could probably have only 7 archers (besides the pikes) on day 1..

Next common fault. You have plenty of army in 2nd week in your town, but you donīt have to buy them all!. This ain't a joke. Early hero leveling often takes 1000 or so exp points, so choosing the 1000 exp is usually good enough if treasure chests are few. The 2000 gold is often a helpful boost, particularly when gold is tight. I forgot to mention this before, but I play many resource-poor maps nowadays as practice. This strat has served me well thus far. Back in the days when I played H3 on Normal difficulty, I would have chosen the 1500 experience. It ultimately depends on your game situation and judgement.


Was discussed many times before.
With those 1500 gold from a chest, u could buy 1 more naga. With this naga, u can fight against many troops. Those 1000 exp. points give u (if u r lucky) 1 good secondary skill. But u canīt fight against throng of halbadiers guarding some (extremely needed!) ressource piles with advanced log, basic wisdom and few gargoyles....but u could with only 2 nagas...
Always keep in mind...the earlier u have some strong units (lev 6 or 7) in your army, the earlier u can make bigger fights for bigger treasury..

You canīt proove these tactics when playing against the comp, coz u will still have too much time to develop your army and towns and to clear your area. Try it online....u will wonder why your opponent has stats in the 20ies and all units upgraded in week 4 or 5 when you still fight caches and stores with your main..

True you only get 1 or 2 heroes starting in tavern that have tower troops but that is not a good reason to only hire 2 heroes. Especially with tower it is CRITICAL to cover as much of map as possible and get as many resources as you can quick but you cannot do that effectively with only 2 heroes. And as Angelito mentioned if you take all gremlins off of starting heroes in tavern plus buy gremlins in town and put them on one hero on day 1 you will always have a starting gremlin stack of at least 60. Upgrade to masters and this is a very good starting army. Youd be amazed at how much destruction you can cauze with a good stack of MG's. Personally I think the only other town that can compare to a good tower army day 1 is Rampart with upgraded elves.

Keep in mind that if your going to be fighting throngs walking dead with those gremlins that u need an ammo cart cuz MG's only have 8 shots
