Poll Question:
A small tweak on the battle field

i was just thinking about the battle system.

idea 1:how come some creatures can move and attack and other cant.

i am talking about how lets say a dragon can move and then attack but a medusa cant.

i just think that ranged creatures should be able to move then use a ranged attack

just to clarify

here the grand elves can shoot the nomads but only with a broken arrow. if only they could move up they would be able to inflict more damage because of a full arrow

idea 2: i was also thinking about the obstacles.

in that same photo u can see a small volcano at the top left of the screen. why shouldnt the volcano erupt? i was thinking that maybe every 4 turns it erupts causing lava bombs to crash down. the lava bombs should be placed just like quicksand was placed in H3 but only in an area around the volcano

this could also stretch to old trees falling over or rivers overflooding

so what do ya think?

idea 1 is good and could work, not idea 2 though

both of the ideas are realistic and could both work
both of the ideas couldnt work

I think your first idea would make things appear a little more convenient for the player (being able to shoot at full power) but then again it's a little unrealistic. It makes sense for an archer's chances of hitting a bull's eye to increase as he moves closer and closer to point blank, so the broken arrow kind of has some meaning. Actually, I thought you could move your shooters forward if you had Expert Tactics; I've made some good shots from doing that. It's also worth noting that if you were allowed to move and then shoot, the enemy has every right to do the same!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't really like the second idea. Knowing that a volcano on the battlefield terrain could take out some of my army, I wouldn't like it very much. I think the moat damage is enough, since we have enough to worry about in the form of enemy armies. Heroes versus nature? I'd hate to think about what a flood would do.

It's kind of like how Age of Kings would be junk if the Black Death broke out at random in every game, taking out 4/5 of the whole map. I'm sure it would frustrate many players and make them want to toggle the feature off.

Still, I applaud your thoughts and creativity.

yes of course the enemy can also do that. i just wanted to make the battle field more realistic pushing for an increase in strategy

Killing strong melee stacks would be easier than ever. Especially with haste.
About realism: crossbows taking full turn to fire is unrealistic, because it would take more in reality. Good crossbowman can fire 2-3 times per minute. Longbowman - around 5 times/minute.
-----------
How would this affect gameplay... I'm suprised no one gave it a second thought. Get some infinite ammo unit stack, attack 10 000 Behemots, and cast haste/slow once just to be sure.

yes stacks would be easier to kill but again its more realistic to be able to move then fire.

i was also thinking a bit more about realism and that if u move and then shoot there is a penalty. like a cyclops. lets say it has a movement of 10. if it wants to move then shoot it can move 1/2 x 10= 5 spaces/hexes, and the remainer time to shoot.

isn't rl stereotypically different? i.e. the archers shoot or move.

could there be a way to make melee attacks function in a similar way instead?

could be the more you move the less you can hit in the end of the move (and the less the opponent can retaliate).

one way to do this could be simultaneous combat turns. you give orders to your troops, press 'ready' and the round happens in real time. i guess this would change the homm feeling a lot.

another way could be that, say, pikeman can move total 4 hex per round, pikeman moves 3 hex and attacks with strength of 1/4. with retaliation it gets bit more complicated. say, the target was attacked by griffins before during the round. griffins were next to the target stack (didn't have to move at all). if the griffins died from less than full retaliation of the target, the pikemen will get retaliated, otherways the target's retaliation is reserved for the griffins when the pikemen attack.
so, whoever moves first, reserves retaliation starting from proportion of movement before attack to total move points of trhe creature, and lasting as long as relation of target's retaliation power used to target's total retaliation power.

so, if 100 angels attacked an imp, it might make one think that they don't use up all their attack power, and could continue moving to the next target the same round.

btw i am not saying that i listed all possible ways to make melee attacks similar to shooting, just my thoughts went in that direction today.

or, it could be the present system, if we said that moving was part of a melee attack. the problem would be that strength of a melee attack doesn't depend on how much the attacker moved before the attack.
