well assuming that the word 'corned' wasnt a spelling mistake
i belive it is because he is already dead as being corned is to preserve something in salt or salt water, and it had no effect as he had drowned in the salt water and was already dead...

For the matter of fact, ancient Kings have always been afraid of getting poisened (Most of them had a slave who had to test the meal before they start eating...), i guess the King tried to avoid that by swallowing small amounts of poison every now and then over a long time...raise the dose...so the body gets used to it and he gets totally immum against poison.
And at the time, when he needed the poison, it had no effect anymore....
