Artifact Merchant

Occasionally one may buy something useful from an artifact merchant, but I think that they are even more useful for selling things.

Especially spell scrolls! On a random XL map (against the AI), my explorers pick up so many of these that sometimes they reach the limit and can't pick up anything more. A few scrolls may be useful (TP or DD), but most of them are Summon Boat or View Air. You can't sacrifice them on an altar to get experience, so the only way to get rid of them is to sell them at an artifact merchant.

Selling scrolls can be quite profitable. If you have enough marketplaces, you can get 1500 gold per scroll, or 6 wood/ore or 3 precious resource. In other words, you can sell 7 scrolls for 10,500 but it ony costs 10000 to build the artifact merchant in a Conflux, Tower, or Dungeon town -- That's a nice deal, give up 7 useless scrolls and get the artifact merchant structure for free! And once you have the structure, selling 5 scrolls can get you more than enough stuff to buy an Archangel.

If you're greedy, you can take advantage of a bug:

We donīt accept posting possible "cheats" here.

Save before going in to the artifact merchant to sell stuff. Sometimes it has crashed the game for me. Now that I arrange my backpack to try to keep all the scrolls together, it never crashes anymore. I save first anyway.

Things like the Bird of Perception can't be sold for much. It may be better to trade these cheap artifacts to a  seer who wants them, or perhaps to sacrifice them for experience (on an Altar of Sacrifice).

Oh, I forgot and had to edit:

An artifact merchant in the outside world never changes its stock. Buy it all, it's all gone. Leave it in the store, it will always be there unless your opponent can get to that spot.

All artifact merchants in towns have the same things for sale, but restock on Week 1 Day 1 of a new month.

This means that if an in-town merchant has something really good you might want to stretch your resources a bit in order to buy it -- otherwise your opponent may buy it. (You should always check on Week 1 Day 1 to see what's avalable.) Just a thought, you might buy something like the Recanter's Cloak not because you want to use it but because you don't want it used against you.

Also, if you get to Week 4 Day 7, and there's something in the in-town artifact merchant that interests you, better buy it today because it will be gone tomorrow!

The AI will weaken itself by spending too much to buy artifacts it doesn't really neeed. Be sure you don't do the same, and be aware of what items are overpriced and what items are bargains.

My opinions of the prices charged for some artifacts follow:

The items that speed up your troops in battle tend to be cheap.

Speed Gloves cost half as much as Speed Boots.

Items that only increase your Knowledge are usually not worth the price (because you can visit a magic spring or mana vortex).

Pieces of the Statue of Legion are too expensive unless you can buy the one piece you're missing to create a whole Statue.

Mana artifacts are almost worthless, unless you can buy the missing piece to assemble the Wizard's Well (recharging all your spell points every day is handy if you want to use the Armageddon spell).

After posting this I have researched more carefully.

The "backpack" is all the artifacts that your hero carries but does not use. 5 of them are shown, and if you have more than 5 things in your backpack, arrows are displayed to let you move the view sideways.

Do Not Use These Arrows In The Artifact Merchant!!!! They are buggy. They can crash the game. They can cause you to sell something you wanted to keep. Most of all, they can crash, and if playing online you drop.

If you click on your hero outside the artifact merchant, and carefully line up all the things you want to sell, and then in the artifact merchant simply sell them without ever using the scrolling-arrows, I think you will never crash.

At least, I haven't had a crash for a long time, and I often use the art-merchant. ("Heroes Complete" is my version.)

If my post is worth nothing else, at least it should tell you how to avoid the crash!
