You should elliminate opponents before they get powerful and start to annoy you. If you have problems to keep them all alive, don't separate them - keep the weak ones always close to a strong one and elliminate all close enemies with main armies. With wise chaining there are no problems then.

Here are some advice I gave some time ago at Round Tables

Make a good use of following adventure map objects: hill forts, Fly hives, behemoth and roc dwellings and a dimension door from a pyramide would not hurt either. In the beginning I recommend to pick 5 cyclopes as starting bonus. Send Kilgor and (at least) one more hero immediately up to north, take 2 roc cliffs, goblin huts and hill fort. With the help of little magic they are easy. Get wyrvens from hives and build behemoths and castle to your home. In the begin of week 2 you have about 18 T-birds, 3 ancients, 5 cyclope kings and about 20 wyrvens. That army should not have troubles to go to green portal and start conquering opponents. The faster you kill them the easier. Conquer and protect towns and do not hunt enemy heroes on open field if it is not highly necessary. Hope it helps!
