What do you look for in a Game

i cant find a thread on this so here goes, in order of preferance first being the most important, last being the least important.

1)Story- if a game doesnt have a good story then i wont like it, i can accept if its an old game like FF1 where you cant fit too much memory but withou a good plot i just give up half (Maybe 1/4) of the way through. good charachter development should be there too. (this is why i love final fantasy so much)

2)Music- music is a very important factor to me, it sets the mood and good music gets me pumped up to play. when i say music i dont mean how realistic the sounds are nor the sound quality, rather it sounds like the music has been composed well and some effort has been put in to help set the mood (this is another of the reasons i love final fantasy so much)

3)Gameplay- self eplanatory, if its not fun then there isnt much use playing

4)lenght- the longer the better (yet another reason i love ff)

5)Graphics- isnt that important to me but its nice to see that the makers put some effort into making it look pretty

6) difficulty- i dont mind if something is too hard but i get annoyed when it's too easy

well thats it from me, how about you

story-needed every game except some like sims
music-not that important but nice to have when waiting but then again a good game wont have a long waiting period
gameplay-important
length- needed but the game cant go for too long, about 100h
graphics-needed to be decent. no point in playing if u dont know whether thats a person or a building
diffuculty-not important, good games have a slider

Story:
A solid story is always important for a game. Twenty plus levels of just beating some unexplained enemy would hardly be fun at all. A story gives the gameplay purpose and keeps the player interested. Games based on historical events are also cool to play, because I've always enjoyed learning about history. That way, I can enjoy more than just pure fiction.

Music:
A musician myself, I enjoy game music if it matches my various tastes. Of course, I wouldn't say that a game needs good music to be great. There's always a time when I'll get a little tired of the same four or five tracks on repeat; even the good ones get old after several hours go by. More recently, however, I've been playing my games with the sound turned down really low. This is because I'm usually listening to music CDs at the same time. I suppose liking game music is no different from liking other music; it's a mood thing.

My favorite game songs are "Eyes On Me" by Faye Wong and "Girl in the Tower" by Mark Seibert. Those came from the soundtracks of Final Fantasy VIII and King's Quest VI, respectively.

Gameplay:
I think gameplay should be simple and not overly complicated. A player shouldn't spend his/her first thirty hours of playing a new game completely confused. If there are many things the player should know, an in-game tutorial is often very helpful. On the other hand, lengthy game manuals are quite a pain to read if you're strapped for time.

Exploring lesser known styles of gameplay can be rewarding, such as when I tried Mob Rule. Even though the gameplay was hard to understand at first, a helpful tutorial helped to show me the fun factor of this vastly underrated gem.

Length:
It's important that a good game is long enough so that the enjoyment doesn't end far too soon. Personal taste and preferences in gaming is a factor here. I wouldn't really care if a lousy game was stocked with levels. Of course, by contrast, I'd want all of my good games to be ripe with a long enough time span to keep me occupied. For those really good games, a map editor and/or a random map generator make great features that help to lengthen the enjoyment.

Graphics:
I'm not critical about a game's graphics. There are some ancient games that I still enjoy to this day that barely have 16 colors. Nevertheless, I do like a variety of graphic styles in a bunch of games. I'd say Heroes, Warcraft II, Quest For Glory, and Unreal stand out as some of my favorites. Overall, I don't think the quality of a game's graphics has anything to do with whether or not a game can be enjoyable.

Just thought of something. There are so many 3D games coming out these days. I'm tempted to say that many of them look very similar to each other. I feel that 3D graphics are quickly becoming overkill and aren't a big deal. On a trivial note, I don't think my current graphics card can handle many of today's new software releases.

Difficulty
Plain and simple, I like it when games have different difficulty levels to choose from. That's a good way to accomodate new and veteran players. Otherwise, I tend not to like games that are mainly decided on luck. That's not very fair to the player, and many failed games can make the person frustrated. Games that give the player a good chance at doing well are fine with me.

I think that's all there is to it. There's just some lesser categories such as a game's educational value and content pertaining to sex, gore, bad language, etc. I've no real thoughts about these, so I won't draw up anything more right now.

Fun, fun, fun. Playability, playability, playability. I don't care if a game supposedly has a gripping story, but makes me yawn after 15 minutes of playing. Same goes for graphics and everything else. Take a look at Crimsonland for example. No story whatsoever. Graphics are good IMO, but no 3D, so many people would say WTF and delete it on the spot. Shoot a lot of baddies and then die, that's all there is to it. And yet it's lotsa fun.

i think strong charecters and time seem more important to me. y'now if you like medieval age, modern time, or far future with lasers and droids. especially if the characters are strange and kinda mysterious, you wanna find more information about them by passing a lot of levels.

sorry but im going to use the same list, as it sums up basically all games.. ND thanx guitarguy if you dont mind ill use your format..

Story:
Importance Meter: 9/10
To me a games story is very important. It shapes how the game is to be played, and it often provides understanding as to how and why our characters act the way they do. Also games with poor story lines tend to struggle, as they are more confusing to understand.

Music:
Importance Meter: 6/10
I like music, and i enjoy listening to games soundtracks. However if i dont like it, and i usually dont, i just turn the volume down, problem solved. However i like commentry alot, and when your playing sports games, bad commentators are a pain in the @$$!! When a game does have music worthy of turning up, i usually do take the opportunity to listen and admire the music.

Gameplay:
Importance Meter: 7/10
Gameplay is important. It separates the bad games from the good games. I believe even tho it is not essential, it can make or break a game. I cant stand games that have 50 million buttons, and a complicated sequence of buttons needs to be pushed for the most simple actions in the game. Keeping it simple, makes the game easier to play, but if there is a need for many buttons, please God let them put in a tutorial which teaches you the basic outline of the moves in the game!!

Length:
Importance Meter: 8/10
Very important to me. Really great games have been let down by relatively short lengths. If i am to pay top dollars for games, i demand that i get my money worth, and if a game can be completed in under a day, then there is no way im going to pay for it. On the other hand, games that drag on way past the main story line into sub plots, and sub-sub plots drive me crazy. I cant stand when u dont no if your anywhere closer to finishing a game then u were a day ago. Especially when you've finished the main story, and have forgotten the subplots which you have to go back and complete, and make no sense wot so ever, as they should have been completed at the time you unlocked it in the main story line.

Graphics:
Importance level: 6/10
To me, graphics arnt the reason i buy a game. It may be a positive to buying it, but it will never attract me just because someone told me how good they are. However games that are very similar, such as the many sports games available, graphics can play an important role in deciding which game to play. I want to see sweat dripping off a guys red face, or mud covered boots, untied shoelaces, all great things in the world of graphics!! cant wait till the day comes that graphics are so good they look like real life.. However graphics do not make or break a game. I can think of many games which graphics absolutely stink, but the game is one of my favourites of all time.. Also if i was so interested in graphics, i would have bought an xbox instead of a PS2, but i prefer game quality instead..

Difficulty
Importance Meter: 3/10
Im not fussed about difficulty really. Most games come with an option of easy, medium, or hard, and thats all i need. If a game doesnt give you options, then it probly means it has a preset of medium, which is ok, and im not a big fan of replaying games over, just to change the difficulty setting and beat it at a harder level. I like to play at an average level, and if its too easy, i change it to a harder level, especially as i adapt to the game, and learn how to play it..

Thanx for reading, DarkTitan

Totally agree. If I stop playong it a week after I bought it, either because it's boring - or I've finished it- then it was a wate of money.

Doesn't matter what type of game, whether a fighting, adventure or RPG. If I still wanna play it 6 months later then it's a good game imo.
