Need Help (HoMM 2)

I cannot beat the first level of the Good campaign in HoMM 2. I do not specialize with the Wizard, but the Sorceress, so any help would be appreciated.

(If I can't beat this level, and label me as the worst HoMM player if you like.)

I kinda remember this mission, so I'll try to help. You have a Wizard town in the south, while your enemies are up north. The good thing about this map is that if you make timely progress in building up your army, the enemy players will not be too powerful. There's a small stack of Trolls that will block the only entrance into your territory, so your first two or three weeks should be reasonably peaceful. There's a gold mine to the far west of your land, if I'm not mistaken.

At the start, let's assume you don't start with the Pen already built. Try this:

Day 1: Pen (Boars)
Day 2: Cliff Nest (Rocs)
Day 3: Foundry (Iron Golems)
Day 4: Mage Guild
Day 5: Ivory Tower (Magi)
Day 6: Well
Day 7: Orchard

Gather the loose resources around your town and claim any sawmills or ore mines. Return to your town when you can buy creatures from all of the above dwellings. Just make sure you have all of the above dwellings by the end of the first week.

From here use good judgement as to what creatures to attack. Just don't try to attack the Trolls during the first three weeks. There's probably a Observation Tower somewhere that you can boost your view with. Try to find a gem mine, and also look for the western gold mine. The extra income from the latter mine will help you finance your army. Most importantly, try to keep your ranged units alive as long as possible.

If you see an enemy push through the Trolls in the north, return to your town and rally to defend. You should probably have two or three weeks' worth of Halflings, Rocs, and Magi. These, along with whatever number of Boars and Golems you have, should be capable of turning back your foe. Try to engage or ward off enemy heroes before they reach your town. Your town must be protected.

When you have a decent attack force, push northeast and attack a Warlock town located there. At the same time, have a second hero hold fort back at your home town and ward off any other would-be invaders. If you have a good supply of gems and gold, invest in a Cloud Castle to recruit Giants. Titans are too expensive for this map, so just stick with Giants. Keep your main hero near your Warlock town so that it cannot be seriously threatened by enemy heroes. Bring up the second hero with Giants and Magi to help ward off enemies. When you're ready, push further west and northwest so you can take on your Necromancer and Barbarian enemies. Try to beat their main armies so you'll have less to worry about when you reach their castles. And don't forget to reinforce your armies when necessary.

I hope you'll find this helpful.

Well, I would not call anyone worst player, but if you want to complete the champaign you seriously need to have a critical look at your strategies. Some maps that come are significantly harder (even with the dwarven alliance) than the first one.

Guitarguy gave you a nice walkthough. But to repeat/add some point:
1. No matter if you use sorceress or wizard, better hire a barbarian as your main hero. Knowledge/magic matter less on small maps than the additional attack/defense your creatures get.
2. Dwellings have higher priority above all other structures.
3. Do not spend too much time on picking up every artifact or ressource pile/mine with your main hero. Ignore things that waste time and are of little help or use secondary heroes for them. Finally your main goal is defeating your opponents not cleaning all neutrals/treasuries.
4. When conquering, concentrate on taking towns prior hunting heroes. Keep in mind that on day 1 of a week reinforcements come, and you can use it for your interest.
5. Watch who and how you battle. In case of ranged opponents use your flyers to block them. You can block two stack with one, if placed properly. Your own ranged units could be in upper slots (like left to right- druid, sprites, elves, unicorns, phoenix or magi, roc, halfling, boar, giant). In case of equal speed it gives the first turn.

There is certainly lot of more hints, but leave them for next time

EDIT: forgot yo give a link to Kristo's strategy guide for HommII:

I have made it to the mission where you have to save the Dwarven villages. I chose to be the Sorceress, since Dwarves are Sorceress natives. Any suggestions?

Some Tips:

Arm your heroes with Dwarves from the un-upgraded towns in case the enemies attack them. The Dwarves are more useful in your heroes' armies than for defending vulnerable towns.

Send at least one of your starting heroes back to your main town in the southwest. If the enemy captures it, you will lose. Develop the dwellings inside and always watch for the enemy heroes.

Look out for allied creatures along the way. There is a Halfling Hole somewhere in the south, as well as Dwarf Cottages and Treehouses scattered all over. If you happen upon a Ruins, go for it (hopefully, the enemy hadn't reached there yet). Just watch out for your army morale.

Enemies will try to attack your distant towns, but don't fret too much over losing them. If an enemy gets close to your home base, take an army and try to remove the intruder. Be warned: enemy heroes often have a bunch of Dwarves and Medusas in their armies when they find you.

The enemy's main town is to the northeast. You'll need to do some fighting to reach there, and you will need more than one or two generals to do it. The reason for this is that it's easy for a critter to sneak past you and cause trouble. Rather than let that happen, give troops to a couple of supporting heroes and have them cover ground away from your main general.

The HOMM1 guide is very nice.

You see how to play map 1 of the campaign, while all the old walkthroughs I saw did not :-) (playing Warlock, winning map 1 on week 2 day 2 is common.

Map 2, "archipelago", you should never build a boat. Invade through the monoliths or use the free boats that the AI leaves for you. There is much free wealth available in the desert area that can be reacehed by monolith. A scout there can win the game for you.

The last map is very hard for Castle; not enough wood. You probably have to lose your castle to the green barbarians and instead capture their home town.

The one-on-one battles are long and boring if you have played them a few times. They can be edited ny changing the extension of the filenames! Once you get bored with these maps, you can put a hero with 99 dragons right next to the enemy capitol, and win on day 1!

Maps 2 and 3 are great, and have enough cariety that you can enjoy replaying them hundreds of times. At least, I did :-) Yes, hundreds of times.

Uh, what does that have to do with HoMM 2?

Edit: I just saved the Dwarven Villages, and now I'm at the next scenario. I've just taken down red, but now Yellow and Green are knocking on my doors. Suggestions?
