Poll Question:
Shakespeare=No good

Shakespeare,that no good son of a biscuit. He made my literature lessons much harder. His twelfth night is terrible. Nobody speaks like that in today's society! I don't even understand what some of them are saying! It's like learning a new language. I don wanna learn a language that not many can understand too. The English in twelfth night is old english. with words like thou,thy,thee,art..etc.. seriously nobody speaks like that today!

breast=singing voice?!

Shakespeare is terrible. You are no good. I would have gone back in time and made sure you did not exist, if I could.. I would be studying some other text now, and not your twelfth night, shakespeare,if not for you! Twelfth Night should not exist now, it should perish!!

shakespeare is the best! have u red any of his great plays? Im talking Macbeth, or Romeo and Juliet in fact most of the worlds great liturature is somewhat related to shakespeares ideas!

The language shakespeare uses is poetic, and it is very old. It is too bad u dont appreciate it, it wasnt written for the lower society, but only the best (kings and queens and such) spoke in poetic form like in shakespeare.

I like shakespeare..

What? Are you kidding me?

And titan,it's not that I've anything against him,it's just that his twelfth night is used as my textbook. And I don't understand too much in the text,which can get really frustrating at times. My good friend also hates literature, he thinks it's boring.

i doubt very much u talk like that.. u do realise apart from like a few words, most of the words shakespeare used means something TOTALLY different today, because they had different philosophies such as how people see.

for example

Me: does doust have a watch?
Friend: yup
Me: well then what be-eth the time sir
Friend: <insert time here>
Me: I thanketh thee
Friend: why are you talking like that?
Me: ...i dont know
OR
Me: ...I knoweth not

no i am not joking or being sarcastic

btw, i only talk like that to my friends who wont put me in a mental hospital when i act weird, i dont do it to complete strangers, or people i barely know.

Shakespeare is overrated, but I still like some of his works. The problem is that he is given credit for things which he didn't even do: for example, when people point out how unoriginal and cliche his plots and characters are, the reply is often "well, he did it before it became cliche!" This is not true. In fact, he didn't even invent most of his plots and some of them are even rewritings of old plays.

Well, actually, it isn't. THIS is old English:

Eft he axode, hu ðære ðeode nama wære þe hi of comon. Him wæs geandwyrd, þæt hi Angle genemnode wæron. Þa cwæð he, "Rihtlice hi sind Angle gehatene, for ðan ðe hi engla wlite habbað, and swilcum gedafenað þæt hi on heofonum engla geferan beon."

In modern English that would be:

Again he [St. Gregory] asked what might be the name of the people from which they came. It was answered to him that they were named Angles. Then he said, "Rightly are they called Angles because they have the beauty of angels, and it is fitting that such as they should be angels' companions in heaven."

Shakespeare may be difficult to understand at times, but at least you don't have to translate that!

Much Ado About Nothing...on second thought...

Hello, SuckerFever!

TUM used to feel the same way as you when he was forced to learn about Shakespeare in his high school literature class.  TUM would sit there and think, "I can't believe I have to read this.  I'll show these LiteratureGeeks who's boss.  I'll just get the Cliff Notes!"  Well, TUM did go out and get the Cliff Notes, while never really forcing himself to read or learn Shakespeare's works.  Needless to say, TUM ended up passing the class rather easily.  However, the tale does not end there...

While attending college (a few years later with a little more patience and ultimateness), TUM had to choose a literature study elective, so guess what he chose?  Yes, you guessed it...Shakespeare (actually Intro to Shakespeare, but a whole darn semester's worth).  TUM is not embarrased to admit that after learning a little bit about Shakespeare's works and his writing style, TUM really got into the class (not to mention that there were so many hot women taking the course, and the instructor was gorgeous...TUM actually asked her out after he finished the course, but that's a long story for another day).

Anyway, once you learn Shakespeare's writing style, you begin to not only understand his works better, but you also have the opportunity to experience his wonderful sense of humor, irony, and wit.  For example, TUM titled this post "Much Ado About Nothing" for a reason, and if you will indulge His Ultimateness, then TUM would enjoy explaining his sound and logical reasoning.

The title "Much Ado About Nothing" is an excellent use of irony and a clever play on words.  When you actually read the work, digest it, and take a moment to look closer at the title, you may come to the following interpretation:

TUM believes the title is actually a sexual reference of sorts (of course), or at least, about gender issues in society.  You see, in this particular work, women are the primary cause (directly and indirectly) of almost all of the conflict between the men.  There is much distress and disorder in the male-dominated society, and all can be traced back to the female characters.  So, if you look a little closer at the carefully selected words...

Much = much or a lot
Ado = happenings, goings-on...or perhaps commotion...or even trouble (mentioned often in the work)
About = about
Nothing = No "Thing"

Now clear your mind of all pure and good thoughts, just for a moment. Allow those bad and nasty thoughts to take over.  Now, TUM wants you to go ahead and think about the male body and the nicknames for all of its parts...So what body parts come to mind when your hear the word "thing".  Uh huh...Exactly!

So, since 'thing' would be a reference to a term for the male sexual organ, then using basic logic...'no thing' would mean not having a 'thing', and what type of creature does not have a 'thing'....Right again, CyberSleuths, that would be a 'woman'.

Therefore, "Much Ado About No-Thing" is may actually be a play on words to in turn mean "Much Trouble About Women", which as a matter-of-fact, just happens to be a recurring theme thoughout the entire writing.

So there you have it.  Shakespeare 101 with TUM.  Now go out and impress your imaginary girlfriends with that knowledge, and while you are at it...

You surely don't know what you are talking about. Shakespeare is the greatest writer in the history of humankind. He boasts the largest vocabulary of all writers (about 20,000 words). His plays and sonnets are jewels of world literature.

shakespeare uses neither Old English nor even Middle English. His language is Early New English.

Thy breast is excellent.

(Now if you don't understand that read the first post, but anyway this is kinda bull!) If you say that to a woman nowadays at a pub, especially with her 300 pounds boyfriend who've been lifting weighs daily you're going to get a hell of a beating.
