Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
posted Thu, Aug 04 2005, 19:06 by Angelspit at CH
Quote: Ubisoft announced today the new game that was supposed to be unveiled at the German Games Convention later this month. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a first-person action game powered by Valve's Source engine. The game is being developed by Arkane, the company behind the Arx Fatalis computer role-playing game. The game is scheduled for a Summer 2006 release.
Details are scarce about this project. People on the Internet are hoping the game will have a RPG flavor, but the official announcement labels the game as an action game. Will we see a prettier Crusader, done right this time hopefully? The talent of Arkane combined with the powerful Source engine could produce some interesting results. It sounds like 2006 will be a busy year folks.

Arx Fatalis was terrible. No seriously, it was.
I hope this is good, and I hope it has good character creation/development, unlike MM9.

update
Quote: The Game Convention opens today and medias have started revealing some information about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. IGN has a video where Gabe Newell introduces gameplay sequences of the game. "The Might and Magic series is one of my personal favorites," he says. "I remember playing the originals all through the latest incarnations of both Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic." It appears the game will include three classes: warrior, mage and assassin. The sequences shows a mage character using an ice spell on the ground so that his pursuer falls into a chasm. Later on, an Imp is thrown in the air and outside a building with magic and an assassin character stabs a guard in the back. It looks more like Heretic than Might and Magic, but the graphics are amazing. This game will definitely gets noticed by the gaming community at large.
See the first three screenshots HERE !
(I think there's also a short movie film there...!)

Check out these videos, preferable this one first. After watching it I feel its likely it could be better than oblivion.
I have a question about it though. Where are the clips or pics of towns and NPCs? I hope NPCs exist like in other might and magics.

i watched some sorta trailer where this voice over guy explains the game. he says that you can, and must, use the environment around you to win as. such as cutting support beams and ropes so things fall onto enemies. this sounds really cool as there are so many possiblities on what to do
also you can sneak up and kill people, nice for assassins. no classes just 3 kinda skills which advance, combat, stealth and magic. you upgrade skills by quests, not killing men, as stealth chars usually sneak past enemies
in the last few minutes it is just some guy trying to kill a really big unit. arrows, magic and swords dont work so he cutts a rope which releases a stack of wood. the wood hits the monster and the char slices the monsters eye, killing him
if the story line is done well, will be a great game. but i will have to upgrade my computer alot to get it working
(do you think if i worked for ubi they would give me the best CPUs for free???)

In my humble opinion I don't think it will be better than oblivion.
I didn't play it much yet, but for one who played Morrowind, it has a special taste.
As for gothic III, might put Dark M behind the fog.

Hey,
- Well I am still recovering ( from laughing ) over their latest preview ( the wizard ). But I kinda doubt, dont ask me why , that a wizard gets to use the telekinesis at it's full extend in MP, but darn it looks funny. Well you can go take a look at it here : YouTube - Wizard + ratings

DM
I watched the 3 trailers worrier, assassin and Mage, and I mostly liked the mage.
Nevertheless the assassin is cool too.
On other hand I might have underestimated DM, according to some sites it looks promising, read this:
# GameSpot: "This demonstration, though brief, gave us a good idea of the exciting and diverse gameplay that Arkane Studios has designed. If Arkane and Ubisoft can make good on this intriguing game's potential, Dark Messiah will offer fast, brutal, and varied gameplay powered by highly interactive physics and environments in a lush fantasy world."
# IGN: "We're pretty pleased with how the single-player action is heading right now. It's pretty difficult to create a really satisfying first-person melee combat experience but Arkane certainly seems to have their heads on straight."
# PALGN: "Words can’t describe how enjoyable this game is, and just how good it looks in the flesh. Part of the fun for us was just exploring the different ways of approaching battles and killing enemies – there’s so much at hand." (Celestial)

I personally think the game looks very promising, IGN has given it some great reviews from E3 as well as some multiplayer action they got to play. The have created a new way to play Multiplayer as well which sounds very interesting to me.

I liked DM a lot too, especially the assassin
Still the Demo, which I played a couple of days ago, was a real let down. I mean come on it contained a tutorial lvl and the lvl you get to see in the skillmovies. It was over in about 5 minutes and it took me over 45 minutes to download those 2 Gigs!
They better make up for their mistake with the real game and its multiplayer...

You can have some extra fun with the demo if you download this "map".
Once you get it, right click on your desktop shortcut and go to properties. After the file path that's already written in, add a space and then type
+map mm_smallbox
When you open the game from that shortcut, it should automatically load the map. (For example:
"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Demo\Dark Messiah Demo\mm.exe" +map mm_smallbox)
In addition, you can fight that Cyclops at the end if you download this save from Gamershell.
Thanx to CH for the tips... as always.
