Necropolis

Necropolis

Introduction:

“Life is change, chaos, filth and suffering. Death is peace, order, everlasting beauty.”

Aka: Necromancers, The Undead
Associated colors: black and fluorescent (toxic) green
Worship: Necromancers worship the Primordial Dragon of Order in a twisted version of her destructive aspect
Core philosophy:“Embrace the Void”. Morbid fascination for death and fanatic devotion to the cause
Country / kingdom: None (they are a secret society hidden within Academy and Haven)
Capital city: None (same reason)
Key symbols: the mother spider

Description:

Necromancers are a split-order of the Wizards. They study death-magic to become eternal. They can control the spirits of the deceased (ghosts) or raise the dead form their graves (skeletons, zombies).
Necromancers believe that pleasures are sensual (linked to our five senses) and that each pleasure leads to pain (being sick from eating too much, grieving the death of one’s beloved, etc.). The solution is to embrace death, which is perfection through sensory deprivation. Necromancers believe in an eternal, unchanging, neutral life rather than maintaining moderation in all things until the next life.

High-ranking Necromancers become Vampires: eternally young, beautiful and powerful, but as cold and insensitive as alabaster statues.

On the battlefield, Necropolis troops are generally weaker than their opponents. However their cost is lower as they are less dependent on “material” resources to grow. So they tend to benefit from a clear numeric advantage.

But Necropolis troops also compensate their relative weakness with other abilities. All Necropolis creatures are Undead. Undead creatures are not affected by morale: the dead don't care, you can't motivate them with the prospect of victory and they are not afraid to die. Mind Effects and poisons also don't work on them: they don't have minds or bodies.

On top of that some units will drain life from their enemies or remain untouched by non-magical attacks.

Brief History:

The origins

> 62 YSD: The Schism of the Seven

Schism between the disciples of Sar-Elam, who can’t agree on the best way to follow the road laid down by the Seventh Dragon and, hopefully someday surpass him. Sar-Antor founds the Blind Brothers, a congregation of healers, seers and embalmers dedicated to the worship of Asha. Sar-Badon founds the Dragon Knights, a martial order disciplined in both body and mind.

The other disciples, led by Sar-Shazzar, the most gifted of them all, lead an exodus of wizards and like-minded humans to found the Seven Cities (the first kingdom of Magic) in the southern deserts.

> 74 YSD: Mysterious death of Sar-Shazzar

Sar-Shazzar dies in his sleep. When attendants attempt to move his body to the Necropolis for preparation and burial, it crumbles to ashes.

> 461 YSD: Discovery of Necromancy

Belketh, a disciple of Sar-Shazzar, discovers the path of Necromancy. Necromantic experimentations begin in the Seven Cities.

> 610-660 YSD: Rise of the Necromancers

The Necromancer presence grows until they are a powerful political force in the Seven Cities

The modern ages

> 751-770 YSD: Purge of the Necromancers - Civil war in the Seven Cities

Jealous of the power acquired by the Necromancers, the Wizards of the Seven Cities initiate a large-scale persecution, ranging from the seizing of their properties, to banishment, to the spectacle of public executions.

A long and gruesome civil war ensues. The ancient cities are destroyed and much of the land is rendered uninhabitable.

> 771 YSD: Foundation of the Silver League

Survivors of the Seven Cities establish the Silver League (the second kingdom of Magic) in the lands to the south. Necromancers flee east to the haunted valley of Heresh.

> 813-822 YSD: War of the Broken Staff

The Necromancers attempt to crush the newborn Silver League but the Wizards gain the upper hand and invade Heresh. The Necromancers are utterly defeated and their kingdom shattered.

Creatures:

Skeleton > Skeleton Archer

---Skeleton

Skeletons are the basic infantry of the Necropolis faction. Those troops are weak but they are numerous, and relatively efficient for attack purposes. Moreover their master can grow their ranks with the corpses of their deceased enemies after the battle…

---Skeleton Archer

When numerous, Skeleton archers can efficiently decimate enemy ranks. However, these creatures have no will of their own and will always shoot in the general direction of the enemy, with poor precision.

Zombie > Plague Zombie

---Zombie

Zombies are made of freshly deceased corpses and are consequently more resistant than skeletons.. Even a small pack of them can sustain the charge of far superior troops. They are relatively slow though and make for poor attackers. However their large number can compensate that.

---Plague Zombie

Plague Zombies are epidemic disease victims brought back to life by the power of Necromancy. Their rotten corpse is highly contagious. In combat, their desease will slowly infect the enemy with each successful attack, thus progressively reducing its fighting ability. Plague Zombies are excellent to block and weaken a stack of powerful enemy creatures.

Ghost > Spectre

---Ghost

Ghosts are usually doomed souls of living beings that died unfairly from murder, betrayal, unjust death sentences… Now thirsty for revenge and existing between life and death, they are fast, incorporeal creatures. They can inflict severe damages to their opponents, and on top of that they are more resistant to non-magical attacks.

---Spectre

Spectres are the remains of evil souls, hovering between the material and immaterial worlds. They are more resistant to non-magical attacks, And also have the ability to drain mana out of their enemy to restore their own energy.

Vampire > Vampire Lord

---Vampire

Vampires are fast and skilled warriors. Eternally young but gifted with hundreds of years of combat experience, they are thirsty for their enemies’ vital energy. Their attacks are so powerful that their opponents will not even be able to strike back. Vampires will suck life out of their defeated enemies to restore their own, or even to reanimate the fallen ones within their ranks.

---Vampire Lord

The vampire lords are the heir noble families doomed with the thirst for blood. As such, they are highly skilled in the art of combat and master fencing at a higher level. Their superior mastery of the dark arts allows them to change their appearance into a bat at will. This gives them a wider range of attack and allows them to evade a melee at will.

Lich > Archlich

---Lich

Liches are undead wizards who used their knowledge and power to evade their mortal condition, but at the cost of living imprisoned inside a dead body. .They have the ability to fire Death Clouds that will drain the life out of any living creature. This ability doesn't affect Undead creatures.

---Archlich

Arch Liches were superior wizards who preserved their magical abilitiy to cast spells in their new condition. As a result they will cast dark spells to weaken or curse the enemy...

Wight > Wraith

---Wight

Wights are doomed souls thirsty for revenge on all living creatures that took possession of a mortal body. Their weapons are fear and life drain. Their attacks will grasp the enemy’s heart in cold fear, thus reducing their combat skill and strength.

---Wraith

On top of possessing a body, Wraiths can decide to take the life of one enemy creature, no matter how strong it is, while the rest of the stack will loose all its magical abilities and protections.

Bone Dragon > Spectral Dragon

---Bone Dragon

Bone dragons are the strongest Necropolis creatures. Although weaker than “regular” living dragons, they are also cheaper to recruit due to their undead condition. They will fly into enemy ranks, causing many casualties to the creatures standing in their way.

---Spectral Dragon

The Spectral Dragons are the remains of ancient dragons that refused to embrace death. They live half in the immaterial world, in incorporeal state. All non-magical attacks against them are consequently more likely to miss. Although they are far weaker than the legendary creatures they used to be, they still remain a deadly threat to any enemy.

Haven't seen any picture of necros. But I sure hope that tomorrow I will NOT see any spider in the ranks of necropolis. What the heck has "mother spider" got to do with necros?
From what I understand vampires will be there (small hint in the text). With or w/o the tuxedo, remains to be seen. Fingers crossed.

As I already posted on GG, I got the impression the upgrades will be like choosing the other creatures. Like it was in Heroes IV, perhaps not all creatures will be like that, but we already saw that creatures and upgrades have different abilities. For example:

Lich > Shooter (death cloud) //  Arch Lich > Spellcaster
Peasant > Taxpayer (weak, but makes money) // Militia Guard > Stun (Fighter, but loses taxpayer)

That is also clearly seen while looking at creature graphics... they differe alot... For example ghosts look like females in white robes with chains.. and spectres you can see yourselves...

And my opinion on Vampires is the most positive of all series, now they do not look like James Bonds or Ratmen...

Sadly, this is not confirmed (nor likely).

Finally!  A non-Inferno, non-Haven town!  And it's a good one.

I like the whole line-up (not so much the zombie, but I've never seen a zombie design I liked, frankly).  The vampire is especially neat.  It resembles warrior-monk meets eighteenth-century officer with a medieval flavor, and somehow the mix works.  It looks distinctive, and the design is a great way to circumvent the entire Nosferatu vs. Dracula debate.    Can anyone read that blade?  It looks like German.

Nitpicks:  The slightly Southern belle look to the Lich's skirt is most disconcerting with those combat cowboy boots.  Fortunately, the "fall" of fabric causing the hoop-skirt effect is probably restricted to the concept art.  Secondly, will someone buy that Skeleton a second boot?  Or confiscate the boot it's got?  Lopsided footwear is going to drive us obsessive-compulsive people up the wall.

Wizards next, presumably, since they've been hinted at now...

Skeleton

It'll be interesting to see how Nival would balance Necromancy and Skeleton Archers.

Oh, the helmet I can live with, but please drop the boot. It's just silly.

Zombie

I agree with vladpopescu that flies would be a nice additional detail for the upgraded Zombies. Other than that, this is a classic. I like how they look like undead Paesents, too.

Ghost

I am not sure about the Ghosts. Three of them...? It still may look good on the battlefield or in the dark woods on the adventure map, as seen in the recent screenshots. They certainly seem more powerful than the Heroes 4 rendition, but the predecessor was somehow more spooky.

Vampires (re-posted )

Vampires are... strange. While I like the modern rendition (the infamous waiter ), I do agree it does not belong to the medieval world of Heroes. As for the latest incarnation, I am undecided myself. The sword doesn't belong here - the vampires don't need it. It looks powerful in the new screenshot, though. It reads "the wing of death", huh...? Whatever. The collar and the boots are over the top, but I can live with them. I think the origin of their ponytail is Asian or more precisely, Turkish. The Ottoman Empire played a significant role in the Middle Ages in southeastern Europe. It is common to associate Vlad Tepes (Dracula) and Transilvania with vampires; the concept artist might have wanted to add an exotic touch, a pseudo-oriental feeling... on purpose or not. It's just a guess, of course. It also gives this version a look of a young, hot-headed and rebellious noble... While the upgrade might look more dignified, older and wiser and less fierce. I am aware this is just a wishful thinking, though.

Lich

They are back as creatures, and that's a good thing. The bad news is the latest incarnation looks like Warcraft III, but so does the whole game, from adventure map trees to green and pointy Necropolis.

Wight

I wouldn't say they climbed up a few levels; my impression is the developers didn't want to use the controversial "Grim Reaper" title... The scythe finally made it to Necropolis (notice the hero has it, too), although it's kind of short, isn't it? I am sure the Spawn-like cloak will look fearsome in 3D. In conlusion, it's a great creature, although I already miss Dead Knights. The hero doesn't look like one, either.

Bone Dragon

OK... The new ability will surely add new tactical options, although I believe its damage will be minor.

To sum up - it's your classic Necro roster. In this case, "Heroes 3 in 3D" may actually be a good thing.

Um... wtf? What has the Ottoman Empire has to do with anything ? I mean Tepes was a romanian (like Transilvania is in Romania). He slaughtered Ottomans. He impaled their snowing heads on spikes! Do you mean that TransilvaniaTepes were influenced by the Ottoman so now they look like snowing samurai? The Ottomans never looked like samurai either. The Ottoman empire may have played a role back there, but it ain't got anything to do with, well anything. Few words and stuff, no more no less. Noone's wearing kimonos. The Vampire looks bad. He's like one of those ronin wearing make up. A ronin with german inscription on his sword! What does Germany has to do with Heroes?
