Thank Azagal and DomFontana for the tips. DomFontana, you listed A LOT of cons for V. But if this computer I'm on can handle the demo, I'll probably give it a try. =]

Hi, Corribus.

After I finished the TOE campaign in HOMM V, I installed HOMM IV with the 2 expansions again and started playing it. Something about it just didn't catch my fancy, so I went back to HOMM V and started playing the random maps. I'll give HOMM IV a shot again.

Hey, Reggie Jackson is here! haha Just kidding.

Hi jackson and Kush. Definitely give HOMM V a shot. As I said, despite the annoyances I mentioned, I still played all the scenarios, campaigns, included maps, and tons of random maps in HOMM V, Hammers of Fate (HOF), and Tribes of the East (TOE). Just make sure you get all the updates for the game from here.

You might like the new complex magic system and maybe you like manual battles. I think I'm in the minority when it comes to the battles. Many people here said they love the battles. For me, after playing many games with real-time battles; Age of Empires, Total War, Caesar, and Lords of the Realm; to name a few, turn-based combat, especially when it takes so long, doesn't really appeal to me. That's why I use Quick Combat. And the slowness between turns fluctuates. In a 2-player game, it's okay. Even with 3 players, it's not too bad, and many missions are just with 2 or 3 players. The graphics glitches I mentioned are just a minor annoyance and maybe you're not interested in the cheats. Those were basically all my Cons.

So the bottom line is if you like the new magic and the combat, you can live with the slowness and the graphics glitches. After all, despite all my Cons, I'm still playing the game.

Beware of one thing. I predict that when you both start the campaigns, you'll eventually come back here to check out some of the walkthroughs.

Have fun.

No promises, but I'm willing to have an open mind about this game. Thanks for providing your pros and cons, I loved reading every single second of it. I have seen some screencaps of Heroes V and videos from Youtube and I musy say, I'm not really as impressed as I should be. True to what you have just said, the graphics does glitch, that Youtube video I watched that took me around the Dungeon Town is a living testament to that. But the graphics are really, how do I put it, advanced, if not, admittedly impressive. One thing's for sure though, my PC better handle all the complicated and high System Requirements Heroes V is asking for, or there's no launching of the game to begin with.

Really? I didn't know if you were fooling before. Well, thanks, Kushinada. That's nice to hear. I tend to be verbose, but it's worth it to write all that, if someone enjoys it.

A good thing about the game is the Options. First, you have the Game options. On the left are the Adventure Options and on the right, the Combat Options. Here, you can select things such as, Quick Combat, different speed settings, movement reminder, Auto-Save, Tutorial Mode, Invert Camera, and Tool-Tip Delay for Adventure. For Combat, you can turn on/off the grid and cursor shade, cinematic camera, magic, dynamic battle, and adjust the speed.

The Video & Audio Options will allow you to tone down a lot of the graphics, if it runs too slowly with your setup. For Video, you can select the screen resolution, image quality, and full screen or not. With a low resolution and low image quality, it still looks good and will run a lot faster. Then there are sliders for Gamma Correction (brightness), Anti-aliasing, and Anisotropic filtering. For the Audio, you can set the music and sound effects volume, or turn them off. Finally, you can select from 3 camera modes and whether you want the fly-by town camera. You can also select No Eyecandies, which takes away some of the elaborate graphics flourishes, but speeds up the game. You can also select if you want to use the Hardware Cursor. I had to turn that on because the cursor was moving funny when I used the game cursor.

So the Options are pretty thorough. Also note that many of the Cons I mentioned were more of a problem when playing the Campaigns, but you usually only play them once. When playing the standalone Scenarios, all the included Maps, and the Random Maps, things are a lot better.

If you try the game, let everyone know what you think.

(Long message again.)

Hey, I'm a Hired Hero now.

I really did mean it, I loved reading what you wrote down because it was both informative and intellectual, something rarely found in forums today , regardless of the length. Anyways, I don't do sarcasms, I actually hate that stuff, especially when I'm on the receiving end. But I don't blame you, seeing as how I typed that and not actually said it, you may mistake it as a sarcastic comment although it is not.

Anywhooo... Thanks for all the clarifications regarding Heroes V. It seems like you really want me and Jackson to try this one out. I guess I'll lay my hands on it once I have the chance. I'll be sure to drop by to tell you guys what I think of the game.

Oh, and don't worry about the length, you should see my posts over at the library.

Congrats, you gained a level Whereas me, I'm still stuck as a stupid Tavern Dweller, I can't wait to be an Adventuring Hero and get myself a nifty custom Avatar.

Cheers.

Hi, Lilith. Your initials are LOL.

Hi, Kushinada. People have told me I tend to be formal when I write. Truth be told, I have been online since 1982 at 300 baud. I was a Sysop in the MIDI/Music Forums of CompuServe for 7 years. Then I was the Administrator and sole Moderator at the official site of the NY Yankees baseball team. (They're playing Boston at Fenway tonight.)

I'm also looking forward to creating a custom Avatar. I'm from New York. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?

Maybe you should try posting your question about online play in another section. This section is supposed to be for new members to introduce themselves.

Good luck.

Hey, Madagama, welcome to the site.  I hope everyone here makes you feel very comfortable. If you're having trouble getting around here or have questions regarding the Heroes series or just want to discuss just about anything under the sun, feel free to post them. Just make sure you put them all in the right places.

Pleasant day.

DomFontana, man, that is so cool. In that case, then you're a good addition to the site. Who knows? You might be the Moderator/Administrator for HC one day. You must be like way older than I am, lol.  Ironically though, having a tendency to write formally makes you seem ages younger. Anywho, me, it's hard to tell 'cause we generally move around a lot. I'm half-Japanese and half-American (and I thought my username would be a dead giveaway). My dad's an American and my mom's Japanese. Basically, I spent half my life in Chicago and now, I'm spending the other half in Japan. It's kind'a cool though, you get to master two languages. Certainly helps learning how to shift from having to speak with a thick tongue to a soft one now that I'm learning French, lol.

Hi, Madagama and welcome to the forum! There are a lot of nice people here. I hope you enjoy yourself. Be sure to read the FAQ, so you'll know what the green dot next to your name means.

Kushinada, I'm not that old. haha Your background is very interesting. From the Windy City to Japan. That's great. You know since HOMM V is already an old game, you can probably pick it up from the bargain bin at a computer store for about $5.00. Let us know what you decide to do.

Hi, Lilith. You see, I showed you something with the LOL. It's a nice username, too.

I read the entire FAQ and it was very well written. Note how I combined all 3 responses into one message? Normally, I probably would have replied separately to each person because that's my style. But the FAQ said they want to discourage people from trying to boost their post count, so if you post 2 messages in a row, the second one won't add to your post count. And if you post 3 in a row, it will actually deduct 3 from your post count. haha So, I'm following the rules.

One thing that didn't make sense to me was that it said, if your message is eventually deleted, your post count is decreased. I don't mean if it's deleted because it's in violation of the rules, but it said that old messages are sometimes deleted. That doesn't seem right that if a message is deleted months from now, a person's post count goes down. Did I read it right?

Yes, if any of yours posts get deleted, then your post count is decressed.
For example if post only in VW, your post count will increase only temporary, as 99% of VW threads became deleted within three weeks.
And that is right to protect from massive spamming.

Hi, ihor.

VW is Volcanic Wastelands for off-topic discussions, right? Okay, I understand the theory. I'm not trying to boost my post count, but I understand that some people do.

What happens if you reach a certain milestone/status because of your post count and then some of your messages are deleted and your post count decreases below the milestone? Does your previously attained status disappear?

Thanks.

Trust me on this, I've been around this site for, what, two years now? But who's really counting? Anyway, the moderators over at the VW are dead-on strict in deleting spam messages that are either a few weeks old or really, really redundant or very uninteresting. I actually had some of my umm... lesser informative messages deleted there.

Generally, messages won't be deleted if they a.) help others in their strategies and gaming needs or b.) actually show some sort of kindness to members, and since the latter one applies to your previous post, I think it's safe. Mod's here a bit more lenient.

Anyway, to answer your previous question, I do believe that the "Hero" status will decrease as a considerable number of your posts get deleted. Well, if you happen to be an Adventure Hero and custom-change your Avatar before you drop back down to being a Hired Hero, you're in luck. I don't think the avatar will change back or will get deleted by itself. I don't think there are anymore priveleges having a high number of posts counts brings you, I mean not that I know of, apart from a sense of respect from Tavern Dwellers and those shiny stars you see below your QP.
