Heroes explained- TA style

Introduction:At least read the intro, then decide whether you want to read the rest, I know it's long!

I have been thinking about the whole Might and Magic series, and of Heroes, and of course that means Heroes III (to me, it's my favourite). Theres all these demons and monsters walking around, magic spells and artifacts, but why? I mean, these things do not just appear. I like to put explanations to things, in this case games (movies too). If I can't see a way, then I don't like it (usually).

But I do like Heroes. Because it can make sense. It doesn't, but it can. I mean, I don't know what I'm saying, but I'm trying to put into words what I thought up about this fantasy world. I chose to do the towns Heroes III style, but the creatures generally follow the same routine throughout the series. Just changed slightly, I don't need to write it all down.
So here it is. It's not the storyline or anything, in fact it isn't related to the storyline at all, it's basically the background. Kind of.

Since you're all Heroes fans (otherwise you wouldn't be here), I advise you to read it, I think you'll at least find it interesting enough to be worth your while.

Heroes of the Might and Magic: The Restoration of Erathia

Before there was life, before there was time, there was only the two kingdoms of Heaven and Hell. Heaven was inhabited by the Ancients, mysterious but all powerful beings. Hell was created as a prison to keep the Ancients who were outcast, most probably because they tried to control the kingdom of Heaven in their greed. These Ancients call themselves the Kreegans.

Eventually the outcasts expanded it into their domain of evil, one to counter that of Heaven. Blinded by rage at the Ancients, they strived for revenge.
Almost nothing more is known of the Ancients, except that an everlasting battle was fought between the two kingdoms. Until the war was decided to be solved by creating another kingdom, a galaxy of matter of substance in which they could create life where harm could actually be done to one another, as no harm can be done in Heaven. They decided that it was in this galaxy that the war would be solved in a demonstration of each's power by controlling the separate worlds.

No one knows exactly how the universe was created. But it is generally understood that it was created as a spark of divine energy, a mere thought shared by the gods. Not even the mind of the greatest scholar can comprehend how that evolved into time and matter, but eventually planets formed and life began. The universe was made incredibly vast to occupy the minds of the Ancients, and the Kreegans, and grew to be vastly different to the Ancients.
The worlds were swirling balls of energy, sources of enourmous power. This energy was imbued in the substance itself, and was released in the form of nature bringing out the plants and the animals as they evolved naturally. The source of the energy came from the four elemental planes on each of the worlds, in which the power would surround the world. In these planes the energy began to evolve again, slowly, as it did when the world was created, probably by the subconcious of an Ancient, and elementals were created as a result. These beings are physical forms of energy which can be physically harmed only to a certain point, ie. are technically alive. And so the worlds were created, the playing field of the Ancients and Kreegans. But the more they all strove for power over it, the less they found themselves in control of what was going on, and more and more power lay in the hands of the life that existed on it. They soon realized that they could not have direct influence on this world with thier power, and so dominance over these worlds became more important than anything in the kingdoms of Heaven or Hell. As a resolution, creatures were created to fight these battles for them.

There was a particular world on which they chose to make battle. It was on this world that creatures of unique power and ability began to arise to lead the lesser minions to battle, as Heroes. They would fight with power, strength and violence, called Might, to achieve victory in their primitive battles.

The Ancients and Kreegans took interest in the Heroes to fight for dominance over the worlds, and hoped that they could recruit them for each side to fight one another. They tought them how to manipulate the energy flow of the world for their own desires. They tought them simple rituals to get them into the right mind set to allow the energy to flow through them and have an effect, and this art was sculpted over the years to create advanced but difficult spells. Draining energy from themselves, Heroes gave birth to the way of Magic.

The Ancients sent messengers in the form of Angels and to certain Heroes and promised them powers if they would fight for them. The Kreegans, however, sent down lesser minions of their own type, Devils, into the world to become mortal. They enslaved and corrupted good people to become demons, and a new race of mortal Kreegans was spawned on the worlds. Soon armies arose to fight epic battles on this world, but not only those of Heaven and Hell, other races gathered under a banner, accepting a common heritage and ideal, and their hatred for the others. The races created their own territories and kingdoms on this world, and claimed the land as their own.

Castle
The creatures of the castle were created in the image of the divine. The humans are blessed with the ability to use Magic to heal themselves, and smite others with godly powers, rather than the basic elemental energy of ordinary magic. They live and die under one banner of the king of their castle, and their leader, and although their bodies are weak to attack, they use their knowledge of metalcraft to create armour and weapons to protect themselves and harm others. They started out to aid the gods of Heaven, and now their main aim is to dominate and restore peace in the world. With divine powers, strong armour and weapons, they believe noble quest is nothing less than unstoppable.

Inferno
The Kreegans send Devils up from Hell to curse and mutilate their creatures with violence and torture to create the ultimate fighting monsters. With fiery, wicked powers from the depths of Hell, all kinds of evil abominations aid them in their quest to crush the ignorant castle. Strictly heirarchical, the lowly peons are housed in tiny pens while the stronger units and leaders sit up in great palaces. They wield Might with the power of fire and are unlimited by morals, and the Magic of deathly powers birthed from negative energy and the furious mindset of the Kreegans. The creatures of the inferno know that the only way to true power is to bow down before the damned, and that all who oppose will be destroyed.

Rampart
Animals and creatures have taken to the forest as a source of life and of power. They see nature as the energy source of the world and thus living in harmony with it is imperitive. They want nothing to do with the feudal gods. The forest provides them with it's own powers to give life, and to take it. The creatures of Rampart know that their homes will be consumed by the raging battles if they do not stop it. They live in complete harmony with each other, and now that a need has arisen, the harmony has been applied to their perfectly regimented army. Revered Dragons have awoken to protect their forest, and they know that if the fighting is not stopped all will be consumed. They build wooden huts and ramparts to shield themselves from the destructive forces of nature, and so they know how to protect themselves. The forest dwellers are focused and have Might in their co-ordination and skill, and drawing energy from Nature, and the four elemental planes provides them with all the Magic they could need. If peace is not an option, they will bring the power of nature to the war, and they know that it's immense power will overwhelm it.

Dungeon
The creatures of the dungeon are ruled by greed. Unwilling to follow the orders of anyone, much less gods they can't even see, they have gone underground to relish in wealth, material prizes and power. Wicked, untrusting and dark, they band together to keep their domains from being overwhelmed and having all they've gained taken from them. They can't pass up the opportunity of greater power, and of course, the pillaging of cities. Great Dragons hoard their treasures, attracted to the shining of gold and treasure, they are extremely territorial and have joined the forces of the Dungeon to protect their hoard. They have Might in the very form of their creatures, and Magic of curses and hexes spawned from a culture of backstabbing and cruelty makes them a force that you don't want to be on the wrong side of.

Fortress
Swamplands are a place of breeding frenzy. Overpopulated with thousands of species of creatures, and a lack of suitable vegetation creates a perfect survival-of-the-fittest atmosphere. When threatened, their instinct is to attack, or be killed. Natural culling has produced these ultimate breeds of creatures, who have banded together to create an army which have dominated the swamp. As long as they are threatened by the rest of the world, they are dead set to dominate that too. They build buildings that are quite advanced from materials in their surroundings, even great Fortresses. Evolution is so clearly present here, and has brought out some enormously powerful creatures like the many headed Hydra. The Might of evovled species gives the Fortress the advantage they need. Their Magic is brought about by superstition of their environment, and they utilize it and it's bountiful energy to poison and negate their enemies, essential for survival in the wilderness. Survival instincs are one of grave importance, and if this war really is destined to be a fight until the end, then the Fortress will keep fighting until they all die out, or come out on top.

Stronghold
The desert is harsh and unforgiving. Only the toughest can survive the conditions, and it is those beasts which fight for the Stronghold. They use their strength in their labour to build these enourmous Strongholds out of solid rock. They tame gargantuan beasts like the legendary Behemoth to fight by their sides. Nothing grows in those parts, so they are solely carnivorous which contributes to their savage behaviour. They are strict, brutish and incredibly strong, the most basic form of Might, but yet some forms of Magic are practiced by the shamans of their tribes, utilizing the energy through rituals to aid their friends in battle. They started out with nothing and built a civilization from that, and now they seek more, and they will crush anything that comes in their path.

Necropolis
Those who die fighting for a cause the Ancients see fit, thier soul is granted access to the kingdom of Heaven. The others, are banished to the recesses of Hell. But not all, however, are allowed. A few souls were denied entrance to both Heaven and Hell, doomed to wander the earth forever, restless and undying, yet still not alive. They would inhabit old buildings, and search graveyards for others like themselves. Very few were doomed to the same fate as they, and so they had a very long time to plot their revenge. In their undead state, they could view the ebb and flow of energy in the world and study it in great detail, and eventually created the art of Necromancy, a magic different from that of elemental, or holy, which can only be used by those who have seen death. They first used this magic to raise the bodies of the dead from crypts and graveyards. In their aeons of practice, they have become very adept at their craft and have by now summoned great armies of undead soldiers and beasts to fight for them, even the bodies and souls of slain dragons. The undead have also However to keep an undead, well, undead, it requires constant magic to keep them that way, so during a battle if they are wounded enough the energy which kept them moving can pass from them, leaving them dead once more. Seeing this great war between the mortals and hence the gods, the undead saw it as an opportunity to strike and have their vengeance. The army haunts buildings as an ancient Necropolis, their Might lying in their numbers, because there is a lot of dead around after the battles of late. Having seen death, they know much about energy and have had the longest time to practice the rituals and the spells, and so have mastered Death magic which they use to torment their foes, in jealousy and revenge of the misfortune they were put through for all those years. No one knows more about killing those who have been killed, and after being restless for centuries they are more than ready for a lot of killing.

Tower
Many scholars take to the mountains to study the ever mysterious ways of manipulating magic. Constructing tall towers for their experiments, the wizards have got the mystery down to an art. The energy from the elemental planes of fire, earth, wind and water are stronger up higher and so are more easily controlled. They find ways, with rituals and uttering of words, to get themselves into the correct mindset to utilize energy and convert it into something physical. Using their spells to alter the fabric of living things they have created many monsterous creatures who were born to fight. They have even learnt how to summon sleeping Titans who can bend the weather to their will. But so much power can do things to your mind, and the Mages of the mountains have become power hungry. They were the most intelligent, so clearly they were meant to control the world. Why else would the  be granted with the power to create beings, the power of the gods? The Might of the Tower lies in the creatures built by the Mages, and thier Magic is unrivalled by the rest of the world, being able to create such creatures and cast most any spell they desire. They have noticed the gods were at war, amassing armies, which could only mean one thing. The Ancients/Kreegans felt threatened by their abilities, and that it was time to strike. It was time to take what was rightfully their, and no one, and nothing is going to get in their way.

THE END
I think that that pretty much sums it up. It explains how the dead can walk, how the mages can make a golem punch you. I explained why the peace loving elves would kill a bird, and what the inferno is all about. I hope it gave you a nice insight, it sure did for me. Especially putting it down into words, and it makes Heroes III actually possible. It does bend some rules of background, and smashes some others to bits, but that's ok.
Anyone else's comments? Ideas? Someone better post because that was a lot of writing.

Thanks for the input. I was more focusing on where the enemies came from, however, rather than the actual story of the game As that is not explained when playing the game.

Perhaps I can add more later.

Quite interesting, but it somehow interfere with known history (I know you mentioned it so I add a link :-))

http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=373

It's believed that home of the Ancients was Earth, when they expanded throught the universum they met Kreegans (no one can be sure if Kreegans are not only Ancient with different view of world balance )

* First planets created by Ancients were desk shaped.
* The Conflux Lords lived on different elemental planets.
* The all races from homm3 looked like survivors from other planetar conflicts - they have different Ancestors (to be exact Ancestors are only for Barbarians, see Tarnum campaigns), Gods and all such stuff. Perhaps one, two race were aboriginals but who know now?

Thank you .. and Pol I understand that it does interfere with some history I just think that mine makes more sense The survivors of the planetar conflict is similar to what I said, but the ancients expanding the universe and finding the aliens is a bit.. strange to me.

Very good job TitaniumAlloy! you have great imagination, Comrade.
I think you should get a polizer
Although it differs from the official history, it can be a nice fan fic (you should go to the Heroic Corner and post it there...
http//heroes.ag.ru it has both Russian & English versions)
I think that you based it on human history and human nature! a battle in the sky between "devine" beings ond those of that king who rebeled, the castles concept of "holy quest" and superiority, the brutal Barbarian tribes, the wise mages (I don't agree with you ao the issue that they lust for power, but that's your thread ), and of cource, evolution.
Keep going that way, wright an explenation that "makes sense" for HOMM IV!
Congrats on the QP, it is well deserved!
