I wouldn't consider that bragging...
And anyway, if you're good at something, nobody's stopping you from spreading it around.  For example, my band... here I am trying to spread it around.  Of course, I must be doing something wrong, because I don't recall a lot of people commenting on it yet...
I would like to mention that we do have a couple more songs that are now done.  We just need to work out a few small things and they should be ready to record.  I'm not sure if we'll be recording them anytime really soon, but I'll keep you guys posted as I mentioned before...
As for covers... we don't focus on other people's music too much.  We mostly work on our own material, because it's a lot of fun to write your own stuff anyway... and that's what gets you famous.
Sometimes we might play some classic rock songs to warm up for practise or fill in time for a show.
We do want to learn one really good cover that everybody will love, just to get the crowd going though...

I ought to go back and listen to your "Breaking Away". That one turned out really good.

Right now, I'm playing around with some song ideas that I'll hopefully get started on. Developing as a lyricist is my goal, and I think it will be crucial to stop writing junk material. I'm exploring a lot of lyrical styles in order to do this. It will be interesting.

Guitarguy, I invite you to post your lyrics in the writer's guild and I will be glad to help you.  I'm pretty sure RSF could help you too.
As for the good cover... we were thinking something like "Hotel California" by the Eagles.  A song like that would most likely get everybody cheering.
I also wouldn't mind doing a good Styx, Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin song.  Actually, any good classic rock band would do for me.
As I mentioned before, I wouldn't want to focus too much on covers but, if we are to do one, then these are most appealing to me...

Terje (or anyone else who could answer), could you recommend a good album from the Pixies, and whats the name of that one which has that hot instrumental song from the soundtrack of "Fight Club"?

First question: "Doolittle". One of the best albums I know of, atm. Debaser, Monkey gone to heaven, Crackity Jones, Gouge Away, Here comes your man, Mr Grieves, Tame, and more. Great album, if you're into Indie, at least.

As for the second question, I have no idea. Only seen the film once.

But wait - clever Terje asked Papa Google, and Papa Google told clever Terje the answer!
It's called "Where Is My Mind".

I would have to say I have probably heard Hotel California too many times as well... but even though it is played a lot on the radio, I actually haven't seen many live bands brave enough to try and do a good version of it.
There are definately other very good songs we could do.
I am a big fan of the Eagles though.  And the others in my band also like them...
What songs can you suggest?

sorry but nothing by the eagles...(my mom is a huge fan and Im sick of'em!!)

yeah I played bass in a highschool show and had to sit play through the lead guitarists HORRIBLE solo attempt...
I mean my buddy was playing rhythm and coulda vomited a better solo than what this kid did!

I was ashamed to be on the same stage...

(not that I could do better but if it's gonna suck, let a more talented player step up..)

Rage,
back about the braggin' thing...
I didn't think it was either, i just wanted to be sure that people didn't think that I was making double the list that GG had to make myself look good or anything.

anything by styx would be sweet...
or some division bell by floyd.

EDIT:
when i think of hotel, I can't get the freakin' base line outta my head!

That's a funny story Jester...
My guitarist did a solo for the talent show and my bass player played bass for him in the background.  Except, this is where my story is different... everybody loved the solo and thought he was amazing.  So it was pretty cool to be able to say that he's in my band.  Especially because the talent show was only a couple days before the battle of the bands that we played in.  Before the show nobody really knew how good we were or what our music was like...
So, Jester, do you like Styx and Pink Floyd?  Cause that would be very sweet if you did.  I really like both those bands a lot...

Pink Floyd not so much..(I like some stuff but mostly when sitting around the camp fire )
The Ottawa radio stations tend to stick to a select few songs so they get to drive me nuts!

I love Styx....  would have had the chance to see them live this summer but was on vacation 8 hours out!

It's really too bad that the singer/guitarist(?) left the band.. not that Gowan was a bad choice but I really liked the other guys voice (funny but they sound the same).

back to the talent show story...

lucky for us it wasn't a talent show for our school (we shared a building) and it was for the public side.
we had a talent show and played "comedown" by Bush and lost the main award since it was supose to be in french.  We did however with the "people's choice" award!    In a crowd of about 400 we won by about 260 votes!  lol

We wanted to play an interlude of "for whom the bell tolls" but chikened out for fear of reprisal!!

I'd love to hook up with a Metallica/Godsmack cover band!
that would be sweet for me!

Lawrence Gowan replaced Dennis Deyoung (singer/songwriter/keyboardist)... which is unfortunate, because Deyoung is an excellent singer.  He is amongst the best rock singers ever.  He is also a completely amazing keyboardist.  Few others can match his skills on the keys.  He is one of my musical influences that I have learned a lot from over time.  And since I am a singer/songwriter/keyboardist myself, his style is very appealing to the type of music I wish to write.  The whole band of Styx has been of great influence to me.
That sucks you couldn't go see them live.  Since they still have Tommy Shaw and James Young in the band, it isn't completely different than it used to be.
My guess is that there are probably a lot of Metallica cover bands around.  It seems like that band is so popular these days...

actually i find they've picked up a bit due to
"frantic" and "some kind of monster"... which was an excellent documentarty btw!

I didn't like Lars before the movie, i like him even less now...

Well I found that if you were gonna "try" to replace the singer for Styx, Gowan's not a bad choice...  he's got a good voice (similar in tone and accent as the original) and he's pretty decent on the keys too!

I agree that Deyoung was the heart of Styx but sometimes you have to let go... lol

There was a good dvd released with Styx and REO speedwagon but because Gowan was new enough, they didn't really play many of the classic Styx stuff!

Does anybody here enjoy Depeche Mode? I just bought their new album Playing The Angel and I really like their single "Precious". It's a wonderful song with nice melody and a dreamy instrumental interlude in the middle.

I also have Violator, which came out in 1990. Of the songs on that album, I like "Enjoy The Silence" and "Policy Of Truth" the best. They don't come near the magical wonder of "Precious", but are arguable some of DM's best songs.

Perhaps mentioning my Linkin Park music/DVD collection will sway the headbanger types. I figure the two bands are close enough sonically, yeah?

sounds freakin good
'Gimmie someone' is for me by far the strongest, great vocals on the track with a catchy beat. Dont really like the keyboard bit though breaks up the song to much for me.

Breaking away starts good,i just feel the chorus isnt strong enough making it seem a bit flat to me.Think it would sound better ala soundgarden typical chorus . Might give the song more edge.

Very impressive though

Rage, have you heard of R.E.M.'s album New Adventures In Hi-Fi? I listened to your song "Blue Skies" and noted how the lead guitar came in halfway through. R.E.M. used a similar technique in a song called "Leave".

I highly recommend that song, in case you're not familiar with it. It starts out with a quietly-picked acoustic guitar but explodes into a psychedelic song of chaotic urgency that goes over six minutes. It's complete with electric guitar, wistfully painful vocals, and a persistent siren that blares throughout.

One of R.E.M.'s best; check it out.

Thanks Arachnid...
Yes, I thought my vocals weren't too bad for the tracks.  Considering the fact that I had lost my voice just a few days before we recorded I am pretty impressed.  We will most likely be redoing all our older recordings when we go to record our new songs.  I want everything to be as perfect as possible.  I do really enjoy Gimme Someone, but I have heard a few comments about my keyboard part in the song.  Some people like it, some people don't.  I'm not sure what I can do to make it fit in better.  This is something that I would really like some input on if anyone has any ideas.
As for the chorus in Breaking Away... consider that problem handled.  I knew right from the start the background vocals weren't strong enough.  But the guys are working on it, so the chorus should be a lot fuller.  That's how I wanted it anyway, I love choruses that have those strong harmonies.
And Guitarguy...
I don't think I've heard much of that R.E.M. album.  But that song Leave you speak of has visited my interest.  I definately want to have a listen to see how the styles are similiar.  Not to mention, I live for psychedelic rock...

Is that right? For some reason i thought R.E.M was more a hard rock/rock type band, mind you i judged that on... absolutely nothing.

so rage i understand you are getting some new stuff going soon, i really look forward to hearing it. I have been listening to a lot of metal lately but i enjoy Styx and the odd Pink Floyd song... and the common common cigar.
