Well, I've been thinking about new song ideas and I've got a few promising lyrical phrases to experiment with. When I find a little more inspiration, perhaps I'll be able to form a song out of it. I guess I'll work best if I do things in tiny bits for now. Past experience tells me that I give up faster if I try to do everything at once.

The thing I find about lyrics is that you actually don't even have to try and make them complex.  I mean, of course, you don't want to write just typical boring lyrics that everybody has already used.  However, it is still very effective if you use just everyday words, but in a powerful way that can form a greater meaning.
I think you are a good writer and I am looking forward to hearing what you will be able to put together.  I really do hope that the other members in your band are able to atleast help a bit.  If they aren't, I have found that it is just fine to put together a complete song yourself.  Maybe once you show them, they will be interested and want to add parts that they think will sound better.
You mentioned that when you find a little more inspiration, you may be able to form a song.  You have the right idea.  Inspiration is what makes good music.
I hope you will be able to get something happening.  I'm curious to see what you will be able to come up with.  Maybe the holidays will give you inspiration?

Yeah, I'm playing with a bunch of themes that interest me. I might write about love or loneliness, two subjects I'm usually moved the most to do. I've got some final exams ahead of me, so I shall pursue my writing goals when they're over.

---

Got a paper filled with fragments of lyrical lines. Will look into song possibilities soon. More on these ideas later.

Thanks man...
We're currently working on new recordings... it's taking us quite a bit of time, but I'm hoping they will turn out good...
First we're going to record our older songs again... then we're going to start on new original material...

Thanks for letting me download the songs Rage.

I've had a good listen to Blue Skies, very nice melody. The piano in some parts at the beginning feels almost like it's three hand play I like how there's an interplay between lead and chords rather than lead going on top of chords. Definitely something I want to try out myself. (My two hand playing is starting to work with simple chords).

I also like how more instruments gradually add in, and the guitar lead towards the end is very expressive, going much beyond keyboard's guitar capabilities.

I enjoyed the other pieces as well, they are not quite my style of music, but it was interesting to see how they are made - how keyboard, bass, drums and guitar are overlaid.

What are your thoughts about having drummer, bassist and guitarist vs a decent keyboard sequencer? Pros and cons?

I might try an exercise pretty soon. I'll write down chords on index cards and mix them all in a stack. Then I'll pull out three or four of them and try and make a tune with those chords. One chord per card, and probably just majors and minors to begin with. That'll be interesting, if not fun.

Thank you for the reply Val...
Well I have been playing with other people for a fair while now and I really enjoy it.  The truth is, playing with other people in a band can be quite difficult and even frustrating at times when trying to complete a song.  However, once the dust has settled and the song is done, it is a good feeling to know that you have created a piece of art that requires more than one person to present it.  Putting together the different parts of a composition using drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard can be tedious, but the final product is truly real and amazing.
On the other hand, putting together a song using a sequencer also has its benefits.  To be honest, I like to know that what I am creating is controlled and all put together to make sense.  This can easily be done with a sequencer, because it is one person that is putting together the different parts to the music.  However, there are a few things worth mentioning about this method.  First of all, a song can be made more interesting when somebody (other than yourself) discovers something that fits well with the music and makes it more dynamic.  Also, with ideas from more than one person contributing to a song, it is found that it has more depth to it.  Secondly, the realism of the music is harder to capture with just a keyboard doing all of the sounds.  Like you had mentioned, the guitar in Blue Skies is beyond the capabilities of a sequencer.
So it is evident there are pros and cons for both methods.  It's interesting how there are different ways to make music.  I mean, even between you and Guitarguy, there are obvious differences.
Speaking of Guitarguy...
The idea you mentioned sounds pretty cool.  I'm not sure how good it will work out, but it seems like it's worth a shot.  Not to mention, if you are having problems writing lately, this may be a method that will help you to come up with some nice tunes.

So if anybody is interested... my band has newer recordings of Blue Skies and Breaking Away.  Any opinions on the new recordings would be appreciated.  If you want to know the sites where Laced can be found, just look on the very first opening post by me that started this thread.
Additionally... I have created my own myspace account for other songs I have recorded.  More information can be found on there about it all.
Here's the web address... www.myspace.com/waynecollyer.
I would really appreciate anybody checking this stuff out and giving me some feedback.  Don't be lazy!

I am lazy, But im was inticed to listen to new recordings of your music, so when i came here, i had to go straight to Myspace and Look it up. While i was listening to it, i couldnt help but notice that it is the same two songs out of the three you had already done, though you claim to have new material, when will that be coming out?

The new recordings sound awsome, everything is tight and you can hear that a lot of work was put into it. I would also like to say that the new songs, especially Journey through the Mind, sound great, though a little heavier than your other stuff, change of style?

It's been tough for us to get together lately, because of everybody's schedules.  We still intend on completing all of our album recordings, but I've been focusing on just trying to book shows for us and stuff to get Laced some more exposure.  Although I would really like to have our cd done sometime soon.

As for my other site... There are certain parts in all those songs that I am impressed with.  Eventually I might wanna get newer and more crisp recordings of all of them.  Journey Through The Mind is definately one of the more interesting pieces I have recorded so far.  Change of style?  Not necessarily.  I just like to experiment with music.

Hey, never saw this until you mentioned it in Guitarguy's thread.
I don't read the tavern much anymore.

I listened to Breaking Away and Blue Skies.

Breaking Away is good, especially your singing and the lyrics as the main part. Just one thing though, I'm not sure if it's how you recorded it or intentional, just that if I were you I would turn the guitar up a fraction or make it a bit more clear because you can't hear it very well in this song.

Blue Skies has very good piano in it obviously, quite a different song to the first but still good and original. I was listening to it thinking that it was a pretty cool piano instrumental and then the guitar riff kicked in, wicked Nice effects on it too, sounds like a flanger and distortion, sounds very cool.
This song is my favourite. Doesn't need lyrics.

one question; how old are you guys?
Just if you're serious about becoming bigger you might want to promote more. Try and get everyone to spread the word around myspace and that, maybe put some more songs up on your myspace profile. Offer free downloads of your songs, and get them circulating around on msn and that. Also try and get into as many competitions and gigs as you can. This will all help to increase peoples awareness, and it will help alot in the long shot.

Anyway, sounds good, keep it up kicks ***. Good luck man

In addition to my comments in my thread, I take it "Gimme Someone" didn't get a remake? Actually, it just occurred to me that I didn't check your MySpace page; I only listened to your songs on PureVolume. I shall check them out shortly.

And fellas... if you so desire, take a gander at my own myspace www.myspace.com/waynecollyer.  I'm kinda curious to know what you'd think.  The songs on there, in my opinion, differ from the Laced songs fairly drastically.
