homm3 problems,

All my homm3 versions keep crashing out of nowhere, when I install the game, in the setup the game can't read my direct 9.0c. It reads it as directx, I read somewhere that if you update it should be fixed. So I updated my homm3 (all 3 versions) and it still keeps crashing out of nowhere. I tried reinstalling the game, and even after I formatted my pc it kept crashing.

( i have the same problem with homm2 and homm1)

My system specs.
motherboard gigabyte ga-7vaxp
cpu athlon xp 2000
512 mb pc333 geheugen
windows xp
geforcefx 5500
sound en lan onboard

Does anyone know something how to fix it ?

Thank you in advance,
AshenShugar

It souuldn't matter what the setup reads ur Direct X as.......seeing that HOMM III came out B4 direct X 9.0 C.........as long as it knows its there....it shouldn't matter.....

AS fer ur problem.........do u have Heores III.....or Heroes III Complete??? Heroes III comes on one disk and Heroes III Complete comes on 2 discs.........

When does it crash EXACTLY? How does it crash EXACTLY??? IT would be nice if u could be a little more specific about the crashing issue........does it just go to a black screen and then kick u back to the desktop??? Does it get to the 3DO insignia or the main menu and then kick u back to the desktop??? Or does it just randomly crash during a game??

Are u installing from the original disk(s) or a burned disk(s)???? If its a burned disk there could be a corrupt file or something.....if its the original disk(s) the setup might be intializing the Registry file fer HOMM III........u shoul dcheck to make sure it does that cause it will just freez or crash when u click on the shortcut to the game.......

U might also want to update ur video drivers......if u haven't done that already........I have a Geforce FX 5200........I've never had problems with it...but ya never know.....new drivers r always good

I have heroes 3 ab and sod all 3 of different cd's original. And to discrib the crashes, well they are just random. sometimes they come after 5 min sometimes after 10(thats the max time i've spend in 1 game without crashing) and sometimes already after turn 1.

It goes to a blackscreen first and then kicks me to my desktop.

Yes I have the newest drivers.

Uninstall ALL heroes versions on your comp.

Install heroes 3 "Restoration of Erathia".
When finished, install Heroes 3 "Shadow of Death".
(I hope both versions are english version!)
When done, rightlick your heroes3.exe file, chose properties, then version. If it says anything else but 3.2.0.0, then u need to upgrade it. Here is a patch site.
When done, just download this file and run it. This file will give you all features from AB (including the random map generaor) without installing the whole game.(Thx to Xarfax)
When done, start the game and play.

Last time I checked, SOD was a standalone and therefore it is not required to have Restoration of Erathia if you've got Shadow of Death.

I'm pretty sure you're right. However I have them all installed because of the crashes, to see if it was one of the games on it's own. But they all seem to crash me, even homm2 and homm1 crash out of nowhere. Giving me a black screen and then booting me to desktop. Sometime it even reboots my pc.

True, but without RoE installed, you are not able to create random maps. (I know the generator came with AB, but to get randoms to work, u need RoE and SoD together, or AB)

No....Heroes 2 is as much needed for Heroes 3 as Diablo 2 is needed for Civ 3.

And suggestions about that problem then? Cause homm3 is the only game causing problems then with my vidcard.

You could try to restore your system from a former "System Restore Point", where u haven´t installed directx 9.0c already. You can´t do anything wrong doing that and see what happens.
Coz your 9.0c is the only reason i have in mind now, why your game doesn´t work...

I wish it was that easy, but my xp has a standard directx 9.0c install with it.

OK..i searched the internet a bit about your problem, and it seems to happen to other people aswell in refering to directx 9.0c. The problem was: "the chipset of your motherboard".
Here is a quote of a similar problem like yours and the helping post in a specific comp-problem forum:

Quote:

Ok I am so frustrated and REALLY DESPERATE. I have had this PC for two years. It has worked fine. I recently reformatted due to a networking problem i couldnt fix and got frustrated... Now after my reinstallation EVERY game I play crashes a few minutes into gameplay. Also during regurlar PC use like Internet browsing my screen will freeze and then flash black when the picture returns everything works fine... except for games of course. Here are my specs:

Pentium 4 2.66GHz
512 MB of Corsair Ram
Microsoft Windows XP Pro SP1
Nvidia Geforce 4 128MB Video Card
Nvidia 71.89 Win2kxp video drivers
DirectX 9.0C

Now here is the LONG list of things I have already tried.
I reformatted my computer literally a couple of hours after the first reformatt.
I ran all of the DXDiag tests.
I wiped the video drivers and reinstalled using Driver Cleaner Pro.
I updated my sound card drivers
I disabled my on board sound
I ran SpeedFan to monitor my CPU temp it runs between 32-40 degrees C.

Quote:
You have to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard. This is probably the reason your system is crashing. I think Windows has some generic/default drivers that it uses just so your system is functional, BUT it is most important to download and install the most current chipset drivers supplied by your motherboard manufacture.

You will need to know the make and model of your motherboard and possibly the board revision too. Go to the manufacture's website and download and install them.

And 1 day later:
Quote:
Thank you

I updated the agp drivers and so far so good i need to give it more of a stress test but I think we fixed it thank you so much for your time

Quote:
AWESOME! Glad to Help

Just keep in mind that the chipset drivers are different than the AGP driver. You should still look for the chipset drivers.

Perhaps u try that as well?

Hehe, it looks to me I have the same problem, in XP almost all games crash, so I also have Win98SE on, but it's kinda painful... For example, Settlers 4 works in the beginning, but then crashes and I receive an error message, dunno what it says. I'll try to solve it now that I have that info, thanks Angel!
