HOMM1 on WinXP

I downloaded Heroes 1 from abandonia.com and when I try to do anything with it it says something about MSDOS. Can anyone help me out with that?

First of all, it's illegal. Even Heroes 1 are now the property of Ubisoft.

But... I was told this:

In order for the game to run you must mount your cdrom in DOSbox by using the following command: MOUNT * -t cdrom *:

Thanks, but that's a little much for me.

I downloaded and installed DOSbox, and I have the downloaded HOMM1 files... do I need to burn them to a disk?

EDIT: After running DOSbox, I mounted a new directory and then used that to install Heroes into. It now says "Installation Complete! Type "HEROES" to play Heroes of Might and Magic(r)"

Then after I type HEROES it comes up with
"blah blah blaaaah....
Unable to access CD Drive."

I am not exactly sure if that will help, but try copying ALL files from CD (or from whereever you ran installation) into the folder where you installed homm1. Then mount the drive letter that your CD was in when you installed in to the location where you installed it and try again.
I.e. you installed it from d:\ and you installed it into c:\games\homm1 then you need to type "mount d: c:\games\homm1" in DOSBox and try running it from there.

I have it now titanium , this are the steps I follow to make it work:

1. I extract the game files to a c:heroes
2. open dosbox and mount as c the directory c:\heroes
3. then mount as cdrom the same directory

and that is all

There is a program called VDMSound you can download it from abandonia.com. the game runs perfectly with it and you don't have to mount the cd rom.

Good. I feel much better to hear that, because I just bought the complete edition and I love oldies, especially when they're HoMM titles.

yes homm is great although I find it a little difficult near the end. I'm currently in the castle slayer level (only have to defeat this and then the warlock's to beat the game) and i get my butt kicked every time. Must have started over about 20 times by now. Butt I'll keep at it until i finish it so I can move on to homm2.

Heroes of Might and Magic 1 on Windows 10 (fullscreen)

Dear community,

First and foremost, I am very sorry for bumping an old topic, but I need your help guys!

I am having trouble running this on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. The problem is that I cannot run the game since Windows 8 in fullscreen. It ran perfectly in fullscreen in Windows 7, but not 8+

You can install Windows 7 or even windows 98 in virtualbox, and then run the game from that box. If the game is originally a DOS game then you can run the game by using DOSBox too.

Unless you can set the game to run successfully in compatibility mode, you can try VirtualBox or DosBox.

Another option is to install windows 7 in dual boot and use windows 7 only for games like Heroes I and then use Windows 10 for other tasks.

It doesn't take long to install and setup windows 7 in dual boot, just make a partition for it and install it, get the drivers in and play the games.

I find that it is much better to have a separate OS for gaming, because you can specialize it and optimize it for gaming only.

Heroes 1 was designed for Windows 95, at that time there were no UAC or things like that, I would try to install Heroes 1, not into the Program Files folder, but to a folder that you have total write access to, today's windows is very different than windows 95.

Modern games write save files into your documents folder, but old games wrote save files directly into the program files folder, and they don't have write access to there anymore, unless you run the game as Administrator.
