I think that either the H2 or the H3 Hydra looked the best.
They were cool and they had great sounds that came with it, just a good unit or creature or whatever you like to call it.
Now I have captured the picture of both the Hydra from HOMM2 and the Hydra from HOMM3.
I have put them next to each other for easy viewing.
The Hydra on the left is HOMM2 and obviously the Hydra on the Right is HOMM3.
They look quite different but they both look cool and they are just good creatures.
Although Stat wise the homm3 Hydra is 3x better then homm2 Hydra.

Heroes 5 hydra really give me the goosebumps.[Nt because its scary but because it is disgusting]. The concept art is a lot more better than the final workpiece. Like wat sick boy says, it has been glued on, one by one.
IMO, hydra should not have a huge body attached to its head. For me legs is actually also quite redundant. I think the only reason why they want to change the looks of hydra is because of people complaining about the old fashion looks. This is a game of mythology, not a fashion show or whatever.
For me, Heroes 2 is my choice. The snake and slithereen feeling is there. On the first look i knew its a hydra. The sound it accompanies with is just the best. I was quite shocked to see the results though.....[I thought it was H2 first, then H3, H1, then H4 last by H5]

The HOMM 5 Hydra is best, its looks best. But the HOMM 4 Hydra looks more like the one described in the ancient Greek myths....

Oh my God you guys...
How can you say that the H5 hydra is best?!just look at it,it doesn't look scary or powerful at all and these heads are put together in such way that it looks like the creature is going to fall - I mean the balance is awful.Another thing about the heads is that they are too long or they just aren't twisted around like the H1,H2 or H3 hydra,it's like the creature is unable to look sideways.These helmets on the heads are silly (a hydra blacksmith?"uh this size isn't for this one...gimme` a smaller helm for head #2) and with them the creature doesn't look intimidating at all.The animal is strong enough on it's own,it doesn't need some puny helms to aid it,besides if a hydra hits something with it's head and has a helmet on the thing will bend and probably cause more damage to the hydra than to it's target!Another silly thing are these sculls,probably some warlock decided that the hydra isn't intimidating enough and said to himself:"hey,let's put a couple of sculls here and there - that'll do the job".SILLY is the word for the H5 hydra.Another fall is the body itself - it doesn't look strong enough and the BULK isn't equally spread so it can ballance the creature.The legs are too elephant-like and just won't do at all!
The best hydra is the H3 hydra - BULK is the word for it!Strong diplodocus-like body (the way it should be for such a creature) with massive legs that hold the ground tight and don't let the creature out of balance.The dimentions and shapes of the H3 hydra are all Thumbs Up  .The heads are another cool feature,they don't all look the same (like in the other Heroes series) - each head represents another personality and all put together looks AWESOME.
So with me it's the Heroes 3 hydra - looks pretty scary,the sounds are superb (specially the sound that it makes when it's walking) and it doesn't look like a tamed animal like in H5 - and tamed animals aren't scary at all.

I... I *actually* like the H4 one the best, now that I take a closer look.
Wow.
I know right.
But seriously the H4 one has the serpenty look that it needs, as well as the appearance of strength. If only it was a bit taller, and well, bigger, to look more menacing, then that would be perfect.
But come on, we don't need legs.

Altho i voted H3 i was quite surprised the H5 one which was pretty good, still not sure how they manage to attach skulls around their necks though or why they would want to??

Agreed ... the H5 is beautiful. Love the long necks ... and the plated scales. It looks much more dangerous than the previous ones, that was much more like a giant toad or something. The H3 Chaos Hydra was cool as well, though.

I loved the Hydras throughout the series (started playing at H2, though).
I truly see the distinction between the H1/2/4 Hydra, and the H3/5 Hydra - but I like both concepts!

i prefer the hydra with feet, although it isn't described like taht in the myths...an from the H3/H5 one i like the H3 one more, the new one is just too purple-greenish, and that necklace, bleah

Hydras were my very favorite unit in h3 and wog. They were a bit overpowered, but beautiful 8)

and here i thought i had posted here already...
even though the H2 version is the one closer to the myth, i will have to join the ones supporting the H5 version as the best, with the H3 one a close second... i'd pick H1 before H4 any day of the week though...

My "brothers"-the hydras!Ahhhh...Now I can explane somethings about them.
Heroes1 hydras-They're blue,have no legs,6 heads,no upgrade.The hydras in HoMM 1 are made like snakes with six heads.I don't like that.I don't think that hydras have to look like snakes.But know I see-this is the story of the hydras-how did they develop in every Heroes game.In H1 they were primitive,but with giant power-they were slow,with no brain and with a massive body,fulled with giant strenth.Ofcource,hydras lived in the swamp,their home.
Heroes2 hydras-They're brown,have no legs,6 heads,no upgrade.The hydras in H2 are something like the upg. of the hydras in H1.This time changes are small-the color,the walk,attack,defense and others.Even now hydras are primitive,working for the warlocks.Again,they live in swamp,their home.
Heroes3 hydras-They're swamp-colored,have 4 legs,upgrade-yes,3 and 6 heads.The H3 hydras are new-in everything."Putting in a mix" the dragon and the primitive hydras creates a new type of hydra.The new hydras leave the warlocks with no fear and join a new society-the society of the lizards,where swamp is their kingdom.The true place for the hydras.Now hydras are more fast,strong and smart then in H1 and H2.Again hydras prefer the swamp,that is why they join the lizards-'cause they can take cear better for them from the warlocls.And afcource,lizards live in the swamp.So here you can see the develop of the hydras.
Heroes4 hydras-They're swamp-colored,have 2 legs,no upgrade,6 heads.After the death of the swamp kingdom,a few hydras survived and seaked for better life in the new world.These hydras who survived mutated and became hydras with two legs.Again they don't leave the swamp,their home.Warlocks are their masters.Hydras were as slaves!
Heroes5 hydras-They're blue and purple,have 4 legs,upgrade-yes,3 and 6 heads.In H5 hydras are smarter,stronger and faster then any other time.Warlocks controll hydras power and this time hydras don't need swamp,where to live.Now they live in new better places.Well hydras can be proud of their history.-A great history!
